AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Nuttall? Keep It Switched Off

If AdBlue has got into the diesel tank, keep the motor off and leave your ignition off. Urea dissolved in water is what AdBlue is. Being water-based, it won't burn and won't blend with diesel; trouble only starts once the pump begins pulling it. Caught before the motor has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Nuttall. Ring 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

What to do straight away, Nuttall: AdBlue in the diesel tank

To do:

  • Remove your keys, which stops someone switching the power on.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all close.
  • Which product, and roughly how much quantity? Save the bottle or your receipt, and our technicians can know.
  • Tell us a postcode starting BL0 9, or whatever street is nearest, and our van reaches you straight — so call from wherever you stand.

Do not do these:

  • Don't start the motor, even for a moment to move your car.
  • Don't switch your ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • Don't top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue does not mix in diesel; it separates out.
  • Leave the car where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short distance up Astley Hall Drive.
  • Beside the road, do not try draining it on your own.

On a forecourt around Nuttall, whether it is the EG On the Move or another one, ask the attendants to help you push your car clear of the petrol pump. At home, your car stays exactly as it was left.

What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not the motor. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to clean it. A fuel pump isn't designed to take it, and AdBlue was never supposed to go through one.

Poured in with your diesel, it keeps apart rather than mixing — quite different from fuel. Denser than diesel, it drops and collects underneath it — the very spot the pickup draws from. A car filled on a driveway in Rowlands overnight and left unstarted is the simple case. Nothing has pulled the AdBlue up yet — but when your engine turns, that's what goes first, directly from the bottom of your tank.

Two kinds of damage follow from there. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps labouring on the components it hits for as long as it remains there. A vehicle left sitting in Nuttall with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank is not. Water protects nothing. The high-pressure pump and every injector depend on diesel running through them, so the water content damages them by itself.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Nuttall

Why is AdBlue in a diesel often the bigger issue?

Put petrol in a diesel at the Esso and you have a fault of thin fuel. No harm is done while it stays unused, mixed into your diesel — only once the motor runs on it.

The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely wrong liquid. Because it does not burn, running it through isn't an option. Crystals and corrosion remain through the next tankful, and AdBlue separates back from the diesel, and so thinning it won't work. That is why the flush matters so much, and trying your engine "to see" does more harm here than nearly any other slip — in Tanners or the heart of Nuttall equally.

As with petrol, there is good news. If your engine has not run, the AdBlue is still inside your tank, and that tank is the easiest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever across Greater Manchester the vehicle is standing.

Nuttall: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

In dim light, two caps side by side — the AdBlue one and the diesel one, now and then behind one flap — may appear the same. No one means it; plenty of designs allow it. Mostly it is never the forecourt: someone picks up a container driving home and pours it in at home.

A few familiar ways cover most cases. Rushing, outside Hazlehurst Primary Academy, after a warning light came on during the school run, a parent refills your car. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Henwick Hall Avenue. Or the car is topped up in the car park at The Masons Arms, in poor light, by someone who has never opened that flap before.

It happens most in the vehicles people know least: a hire car, a new car, a company car, or the second vehicle of a household with one diesel and one petrol. Wherever you're around Nuttall or the remainder of Greater Manchester, it's the same slip and the same first answer: leave the vehicle off.

Started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Nuttall?

Then the AdBlue has left the tank. Given any running, it travels to the high-pressure pump and each injector, having passed through the fuel filter and pipework.

Lumpy running, smoke from the exhaust, lost power, dashboard lights or cutting out: each might appear, maybe midway across Nuttall or coming back from Bolton Road West Recreation Ground. No starting it again to check: pull over when safe, then switch it off. With each start, more of it is pulled through.

On the M66, under a mile from Nuttall, the first junction is where to exit, and anywhere safe is where to park — not driving on.

Every mile carries the AdBlue further in. That is why a hop across Nuttall to park near St. Andrews Church and a drive of under 15 miles for Salford are such separate jobs. Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

Wherever the car came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to clean out after your engine has been started. Permanent damage is very rare if it is spotted soon.

Nuttall: how AdBlue is drained from a diesel

Our engineers come to the vehicle, wherever it has stopped in Nuttall: a side street near The Harry Williams Riverside Stadium, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. Which fluid was put in, roughly how much, plus if your engine has been run: our technicians ask before all else, because those decide the job.

Right there, that tank is then emptied, and all of the contaminated diesel and the urea come out as one. Your system is cleaned thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own. Fresh diesel goes in once the filter is flushed — or swapped, if it needs to be — and then your car is tested. About half an hour once we arrive is typical for most jobs when the motor hasn't run. The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Bleeding the system with fresh diesel comes at the end. At that point we fire it up and you head off, whether from a parking bay by Bromley Cross or a driveway in Nuttall. Our engineers confirm it runs smoothly on fresh diesel before leaving. Because the job is done in full where your car is, a garage never comes into it. Afterwards, you are given the paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice and a written report from the engineer.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Nuttall?

There's no honest single quote, because the jobs aren't the same. Three things change the price: whether your engine has run and for how long, how much AdBlue got in, and where your car is. That last one comes down to whether our van can reach it safely, and an open drive is easier than a tight gap behind St Joseph's.

Before a quote, not afterwards, every call from Nuttall begins with the same three questions: the liquid, the amount, plus whether it ran. Their answers narrow a range down to one number.

Quoted on the call before the van sets out, it is settled that day — card or phone, no deposit. As our engineer is on the way, dig out your insurance: many include misfuelling.
