AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Oakenshaw? Don't Start It

Engine off, ignition off: that is how you begin if AdBlue has gone into the diesel tank. Urea mixed in water is all AdBlue is. The harm begins once it's sucked through your pump — it will not burn, and it won't combine with diesel. Caught before the motor has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Oakenshaw. Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

Oakenshaw, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do at once

To do:

  • So nobody can switch the ignition on, take the keys away.
  • Close to moving traffic? Then put the hazard lights on.
  • The empty bottle or the till receipt shows us the product and the quantity, and so do not throw it out.
  • Call us from where you are. A postcode starting B98 7, or the name of the closest street, brings our van to you without a search.

Not to do:

  • No starting your engine — not for a second, not to reposition your vehicle.
  • Switching your key to ignition alone sets the pump running on many diesels. Avoid it.
  • AdBlue does not dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding more diesel will not weaken it.
  • Any driving at all is to be avoided, even a short distance along Clews Road.
  • Do not try to drain it yourself at the kerbside.

Rolling the vehicle away from the pumps is a job for attendants to help with, whichever Oakenshaw forecourt you are on, the Tesco included. At home, the car remains just as it was left.

AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Meant for the exhaust, AdBlue has no place in your motor. From a dedicated tank it goes directly to the exhaust, treating what your engine emits. Nothing in it is meant to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is made to handle it.

Inside a diesel tank it acts really differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in. It sinks, because it is denser than diesel, and pools low where the pickup draws its fuel from. The first thing the fuel system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a motor that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Headless Cross last night, and has not been started since, is still the easy case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of the tank, and nothing has pulled it in.

It does two kinds of damage from there. What is left when the water goes is urea, which forms crystals: they settle in narrow channels and block filters. Worse, it eats at certain metals in the fuel system, and carries on till it's cleared out. Lines carrying AdBlue spell damage overnight for a car sitting in Oakenshaw. Just in that tank, it stays stable. Water protects nothing. The injection pump and every injector depend on diesel flowing through them, so the water part damages them in its own right.

Why AdBlue in a diesel is regularly more major than petrol

Put petrol in a diesel at the BP and you have an issue of thin fuel. Blended through your diesel and sitting still, it's no threat for now; running your motor does the harm.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid as such is simply the wrong one. Not burning, it can't simply be run through. It doesn't stay mixed, and so it cannot be diluted. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the motor "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether your car is in Walkwood or the middle of Oakenshaw.

As with petrol, there is good news. If your engine has not run, the AdBlue is still in your tank, and your tank is the quickest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever in Worcestershire the vehicle is standing.

How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Oakenshaw?

Plenty of cars place the AdBlue filler beside the diesel cap, occasionally under one flap, and in dim light the two can appear the same. No one intends it. Mostly it's not the forecourt: someone picks up a bottle driving home and tips it in at home.

The ways it happens are few and familiar. The refill gets hurried outside Crabbs Cross Academy, because the dash flashed with a warning as the children were taken off. In the evening, a container is tipped in on a driveway near Coldfield Drive. Or someone unfamiliar with that flap tops up the vehicle in dim light, stopped in the car park outside Duck Pond.

Rented vehicles, new vehicles, fleet motors, or the second car in a home with both fuels: the least familiar vehicles see it most. Same mistake, same first response — leave it off — anywhere you are around Oakenshaw or the remainder of Worcestershire.

Already started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Oakenshaw?

The AdBlue has left that tank, then. Through your filter, through the pipework, and — with any running time — on to the injection pump and each injector: that's how far it has gone.

You may notice your motor running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, perhaps on the way back from Oakenshaw Spinney or halfway across Oakenshaw. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart the car to check. Each start pulls more of it through.

Oakenshaw sits under 5 miles from the M42; if you were on it, exit at the next junction and stop somewhere safe instead of carrying on.

Distance matters: each mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in, and so driving for Birmingham, under 15 miles away, gives a much bigger job than hopping across Oakenshaw to the car park by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Tell us roughly how far it had come.

Our technicians do all of the cleaning where your car has stopped, and once the engine has been run there is more of it. Very rarely does it leave permanent damage when it's spotted soon.

Oakenshaw: how AdBlue is cleared from a diesel

Anywhere it has come to rest around Oakenshaw — a forecourt, a layby, a drive, a street beside St Peter — our van travels to the vehicle. Three answers shape the work, and so before anything else we ask what went in, roughly the amount, plus whether the motor has run.

Next, draining that tank on the spot takes out the polluted diesel along with the AdBlue together. A careful flush matters much more with AdBlue than after petrol, since residue won't clear away by itself. Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested. If your engine has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once our technicians are there. The pumps are explosion-proof, safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

The final step is to prime the system on new diesel. You drive off as soon as our technicians have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether the vehicle is on a drive around Oakenshaw or in a space at Redditch. The check before our engineers head off is that it runs properly on fresh diesel. No workshop is needed at any stage, with the entire job done then and there. At the end, there is paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice plus a written report from the engineer.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Oakenshaw?

There's no honest single quote, because the jobs are not the same. The cost shifts first with how long, if at all, the motor has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that was put in. After that it rests on where your car is and whether our van can get to it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight spot behind Crabbs Cross Methodist Church.

Which fluid got in, how much, and whether the engine ran: every Oakenshaw call begins by asking exactly that, before a figure, never afterwards. With those replies, the range shrinks to a single fixed figure.

Before anyone sets off, you hear the quote on the phone. Then payment is on the day, card or by phone, with nothing upfront. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
