What Now? AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Old Clee

One thing matters above all when AdBlue is in a diesel tank, and that is whether the engine has run afterwards. Not run yet? Then keep it that way, wherever the car is — Old Clee or Cleethorpes. Phone 0333 366 0103 with the key and motor both off. In Old Clee, that is generally drained and flushed on the spot. If it's run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off. Stage one stays the same, even though the work grows.

AdBlue in a diesel on a Old Clee forecourt

You are at the petrol pump, the nozzle or the bottle still in your hand, and you have just noticed the cap you opened was the wrong one. It might be the BP, or the Esso, or another forecourt around Old Clee.

What it means: this is the best spot to find out. Only that tank has AdBlue; not one part past it has drawn it in.

Do this: keep out of the driver's seat, however much the queue wants clearing. Phone us from the forecourt once the vehicle is in a space — the attendants will help roll it — then keep the receipt. Stuck by the petrol pump? Our explosion-proof kit makes a live forecourt safe, so we can drain the vehicle in place.

AdBlue in the diesel tank on a Old Clee drive?

The warning light had been on for days. Picked up a container, poured it in at home, binned the empty — and only then checked the cap a second time, too late. Homes just off Lichfield Road are hit as much as everywhere else.

The upshot: no driving since makes it nearly as good to spotting it at the petrol pump. Diesel and AdBlue stay apart: the AdBlue drops to the base of your tank and remains there, no matter how long the night.

Your move: the keys in the house, and so no one takes the car off first thing. Then, phone. Your drive is where it gets emptied, be it in Old Clee or Weelsby. Even at night, our pumps are quiet enough for a driveway.

Old Clee: set off with AdBlue in a diesel?

You filled up, set off, and a mile or two later the engine began to run unevenly, smoke, lose power or light up the dashboard. Rosina Grove South, perhaps, or the route to Kingston upon Hull — a trip of under 25 miles.

The point: your system has pulled AdBlue in already. The high-pressure pump and each injector get it as well on a bigger run, after your filter and pipework have it. Each restart, like every mile, pushes it on.

Your move: stop somewhere sensible, then switch your motor off. On the M180, under 15 miles from Old Clee, that means the next exit, not the services further on. Don't restart it to see if it has cleared; it will not have. Phone us and say how far you went.

AdBlue in the wrong tank of a hire, lease or company car

You have had this vehicle hardly a week. Your own motor either does without AdBlue or keeps it somewhere different, and so no one told you the AdBlue inlet was just beside your diesel. Throughout Lincolnshire, nobody is safe from it.

What it means: the same as the scenarios above, depending on whether it has run, with one more step. The owner frequently has to approve the work, under many hire and company contracts.

Do this: rental firm or fleet manager to begin with, us second, because sorting it beforehand cuts time. Keep the vehicle off while the reply comes, even if you are waiting outside Cleethorpes or close to Carr Lane Social Club.

Unsure about AdBlue in your diesel tank around Old Clee?

"I think so" is often the most honest as it gets. Too light, that bottle; a trace of ammonia near the filler; no clear memory of which cap. Look familiar? Maybe at a friend's drive in East Marsh, or in a rush by Old Clee Primary Academy on the school run.

What it means: a little spilled about the filler does no harm to your motor. Once it's inside your diesel tank, though, that changes. If there is AdBlue in that tank, firing up the car would draw it in, and it wouldn't tell you which either.

What to do: treat it as if it was put in. Don't crank it. Phone and give what you saw: we would sooner find a clean tank than drain one once the motor has been run.

Old Clee: what each AdBlue drain has in common

Whatever the situation, a single start applies. We come to your car, whether it's on a forecourt, a drive, the car park at Spiders Web or a side street near Holy Trinity and St Mary the Virgin, and ask three things: what went in, about how much, and whether the motor has run. Answers shape the work; the quote comes by phone whilst nobody has left yet.

AdBlue forms crystals and is corrosive to some metals used in fuel systems, and so it does not wash out unaided; that is why the flush, after the drain, matters far more with AdBlue than with petrol. Next is the fuel filter — cleaned, or replaced when needed — then fresh diesel, and a test of the vehicle. Where your motor has not been started, expect about half an hour once we arrive, in most cases.

The final step is firing it up. Before our technicians head off, it's tested to make sure it runs correctly on clean diesel. Permanent damage is very unusual when it is spotted quickly, and the whole job is done where the vehicle is. Nothing is paid upfront, settlement is made on the day, and you get what your insurer asks for: an engineer report plus a VAT invoice. Worth remembering: many insurers offer misfuelling cover, and so a check of your documents as you wait is worthwhile.
