What Now? AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Othery

One fact counts most once AdBlue is in a diesel tank, and that is if the engine has run afterwards. Not run yet? Then leave the vehicle like that, wherever your vehicle sits — Othery or Stathe. Leave your motor and the ignition off and call 0333 366 0103; it is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Othery. If it's run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off. It is a larger job, yet stage one doesn't change.

AdBlue in a diesel on a Othery forecourt

The cap you opened was the wrong one — and you just notice it as you're standing at the petrol pump, bottle or the nozzle in hand. It might be the Esso, or the BP, or another forecourt around Othery.

Meaning? Spotting it here is as good as it can be. Only that tank has AdBlue; no part beyond it has taken any in.

Freeing the pump is no reason to run it — so do not get back in. Have the staff to help rolling it into a bay, hold on to the receipt, then phone us right there. The equipment is explosion-proof and fine on a busy forecourt, and so a car that can't be pushed away gets emptied right at the pump.

AdBlue in the diesel tank on a Othery drive?

Days had gone by with the warning light on. Only at the recycling bin, the empty container in your hand, did you glance back at the cap you had used at the drive. It takes place on driveways just off Summerhedge Crescent as frequently as anywhere.

Put simply: if your vehicle hasn't moved since, it is nearly equal to spotting it at the forecourt. At the floor of your tank is where AdBlue waits, since it won't blend with diesel — and a night going by changes nothing of the difference.

Next: keys in the house, and so no one drives your vehicle off at breakfast. Then, phone. We drain the car on your driveway, whether that's around Othery or out in Pathe. The pumps are quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

AdBlue drain on a forecourt in Othery

AdBlue in a diesel and already driving in Othery?

You filled up, set off, and a mile or two later the motor began to run roughly, smoke, lose power or light up the dashboard. Somewhere along Summerhedge Road or else heading to Wells — under 15 miles away.

What it means: the system has drawn the AdBlue in. Through the filter, along the pipework, and — the more the mileage — deeper into the injection pump and each injector. More driving, more restarts: deeper it travels.

Next: find a safe place, stop, then switch the engine off. On the M5, under 10 miles from Othery, that means the next exit, not the services further on. Restarting it to check achieves nothing — AdBlue never clears itself. Roughly what distance had it gone? Say so when you phone.

A hire or company car with AdBlue in the wrong tank?

It's a motor you have had for a week. Your own vehicle either has no AdBlue or puts it somewhere different, so nothing told you the AdBlue inlet was just beside the diesel. It can happen to anyone, anywhere around Somerset.

Put simply: an extra stage on top of the situations above, and those depend on if it's run. Plenty of hire and company contracts want the owner to approve work on the car.

What to do: ring the hire firm or your fleet manager first, then us. That's quicker settled before our engineers get there than after. If you're stranded in the car park at Bridgwater, or by St Michael, whilst you wait for an answer, leave your car off.

Not sure it was AdBlue in the diesel tank, Othery?

Now and then, "I think so" is all anyone can honestly say. What cap was taken off, you cannot say; meanwhile the bottle feels lighter than expected, and a whiff of ammonia lingers by your filler. The gates of Othery Village School in a rush, say, or someone's driveway over in Greylake.

Meaning? Drips outside the inlet never touch the motor at all. A diesel tank with AdBlue inside is another matter. If there is AdBlue in that tank, starting the car will suck it in, and it would not tell you which either.

Next: act as though it went in, and leave your engine off. Phone with the details: we would sooner find a tank free of AdBlue than drain one once the engine has run.

Othery: what every AdBlue drain has in common

Whichever situation you are in, this job starts the same way. Forecourt, driveway, the pub in the village's car park or a street beside Othery Village Hall — the van reaches the vehicle, and three answers come next: which liquid, what amount, and if it ran. Over the phone, ahead of anything else, you are told the quote, and those answers shape the job too.

AdBlue crystallises and eats at certain metals used in fuel systems, so it won't wash out unaided; that's why the flush, after this drain, counts far more here than with petrol. The filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested. The majority of unrun vehicles are a half-hour job from the moment our technicians get there.

Our engineers fire it up at the end. With fresh diesel in, it runs while our technicians make sure it's running smoothly, and then we head off. We do the entire job where the car is, and permanent damage is very unusual if it has been caught quickly. Payment comes on the day, never in advance. For the insurer, there is a VAT invoice plus a written report from the engineer. Worth knowing: lots of insurers include misfuelling cover, and so a check of your documents as we travel pays.
