Then what follows covers why it happens and how to prevent it happening at all.

AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank

Diesel feeds the motor — but many modern diesels seen about Oulton Broad and Flixton hold a second fluid too. AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

There is a filler on every tank. Other motors keep the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; a lot more place the two side by side under one flap. The diesel side is filled at the pump all the time. Rarely filled, AdBlue normally goes in out of a bottle, poured by someone who must stop and think what filler it needs. The slip lives in that gap.

How does AdBlue in your diesel tank happen around Oulton Broad?

It is hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

Hurry follows from the warning. The car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up happens in a rush, before work on a driveway off Gilpin Road, or heading home in the car park at The Commodore.

Unfamiliar motors come second, too. Rentals, new vehicles and company motors put their fillers in new places, and the hand goes for the cap used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the pour once it has started. Whether it happens in Camps Heath or the middle of Oulton Broad, it is the same few seconds.

Flushing a diesel fuel system after AdBlue, Oulton Broad

Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Whether a Oulton Broad forecourt or a drive over in Roman Hill, take a couple of seconds on these before any is poured in.

  • Blue and lettering: an AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally doesn't. Trust the cap, not where it sits.
  • The size. On many vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.
  • Look inside your fuel flap: plenty of motors have a label there showing which fuel goes where.
  • The handbook. If the filler is not by your diesel cap, it's in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.
  • Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Oulton Broad North.

Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

On the day the warning appears — wherever it is in Suffolk — a simple routine to follow.

  • Pull in on level, engine off, with time to spare — never hurried on the side of Pegasus Mews.
  • Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it does the trick.
  • Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.
  • Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.
  • Before you start the car, close the cap and look again that the diesel cap was never came off.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you've already poured into your diesel side. Stage five is off limits.

AdBlue in your diesel tank already, in Oulton Broad?

Short list, then. Top of that: the engine stays unstarted. Don't switch the ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump. AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is sucked from — so do not top up with diesel to dilute it.

On a forecourt — Esso, Kirkley Run Service Station or any other — the staff will usually help roll your car away, if you ask. If you are on your own driveway around Oulton Broad, leave the vehicle where it stands.

Where your motor has been run by now, pull over somewhere safe then turn it off. The next junction is where to leave when you're on the M11, over 50 miles from Oulton Broad. Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Norwich, under 25 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Oulton Broad.

Our arrival around Oulton Broad, and what happens next

Outside Oulton Broad Primary School, near Oulton Broad Library or on your own driveway: wherever the vehicle has stopped, our technicians come to it. The replies settle the work and the price, so our engineers ask what was put in, about how much, and whether it's run. No one sets off until you have had the price over the phone.

Emptying that tank comes next, then a thorough flush of your system. With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own. The filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested. Then our technicians start the car and check it runs properly before leaving.

If the motor hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night. You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer. It's worth looking at your policy as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover comes with plenty of policies.
