Over Hulton: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

If AdBlue has gone into the diesel tank, leave your motor off then leave your ignition off. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water. It does not burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the harm it does starts when your fuel system draws it in. If your motor hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally drained and thoroughly purged where the vehicle stands around Over Hulton. Before anything, ring us on 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in your diesel tank around Over Hulton: the first few minutes

Do:

  • Keys out — then no one can switch anything on.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all close.
  • Which product, and roughly how much amount? Save the bottle or your receipt, and our technicians can see.
  • Call right where you are. Say a BL5 1 postcode or the nearest street name, and no one has to hunt for you.

Things not to do:

  • Do not start the engine, even for a moment to move the vehicle.
  • Do not switch your ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • Don't top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue does not dilute in diesel; it separates out.
  • Any driving at all is to be avoided, including a short way down Butterfield Road.
  • Emptying that tank yourself beside the road is not worth trying.

Moving your vehicle away from the island is a job for attendants to help with, wherever Over Hulton forecourt you are on, the Shell included. Stopped on your own drive? Then it stays exactly where it is.

AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Meant for the exhaust, AdBlue has no business in the engine. From a separate reservoir it is fed directly to your exhaust, treating what the motor emits. A fuel pump isn't made to cope with it, and AdBlue was never supposed to travel through one.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves very differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in. It sinks, since it is denser than diesel, and settles low where the intake draws its fuel from. A vehicle filled on a driveway in Edge Fold overnight and not started since counts as the simple one. No pump has sucked the AdBlue up so far — but once the motor runs, that's what goes first, straight from the bottom of that tank.

It does two kinds of damage from there. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps labouring on the parts it reaches for as long as it remains there. If the AdBlue is in the lines, waiting till morning in Over Hulton makes things worse. In the tank only, time does nothing. The water in it does damage of its own: the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Over Hulton

Why AdBlue in a diesel is commonly more serious than petrol

Petrol pumped into a diesel on Esso's forecourt leaves the fuel thin — that's the whole fault. No damage comes as long as it sits put, blended into your diesel — only once the motor runs on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is another matter: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all. Not burning, it cannot just be run through. Nor can it be thinned, since it separates again — and the following fill won't clear away crystals or corrosion. So the flush matters for more with AdBlue, and trying the engine "to see", in the centre of Over Hulton or out in Hunger Hill, costs more than almost any other error.

The same good news holds as with petrol. Wherever in Greater Manchester your vehicle has stopped, an unstarted engine means the AdBlue yet in the reservoir: the simplest bit of a fuel system to empty.

Over Hulton: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Many cars place the AdBlue filler alongside the diesel one, occasionally under a single flap, and after dark the two may appear identical. Nobody intends it. Mostly it is not the filling station: a driver buys a bottle driving home and tips it in outside the house.

It tends to happen in a few familiar ways. The refill gets hurried outside St Andrew's CofE Primary School, Over Hulton, because your dash lit up with a warning as the kids were dropped off. A driver pours the container in outside their house, right off Braddyll Road, as the day ends. Or the car is topped up in the car park at The Hulton Arms, in poor light, by someone who has never opened that flap before.

It happens most in the motors motorists know least: a hire car, a new car, a company car, or the second motor of a household with one diesel and one petrol. Wherever you're around Over Hulton or the remainder of Greater Manchester, it is the same error and the same first answer: leave the car off.

Over Hulton: started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

The AdBlue has left your tank, then. Via the filter, through the pipework, and — given any running — on to the injection pump and each injector: that is where it has gone.

Lumpy running, smoke, dropping power, dashboard warnings or cutting out: each might show up, perhaps midway across Over Hulton or coming back from Cow Wood. Once safe, stop and switch it off — with no turning it on again to test. More of that is pulled through with each start.

On the M61, under a mile from Over Hulton, the first junction is where to leave, and somewhere safe is where to stop — not carrying on.

Mileage matters: each mile pushes the AdBlue further in, and so heading towards Salford, under 10 miles away, makes a much larger job than crossing Over Hulton to the car park by St Vincent's Parish Centre. Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

Once the engine has been started, the flush covers more, and all of it is done where the vehicle has ended up. Lasting damage is very uncommon if it is caught soon.

Clearing AdBlue in a diesel around Over Hulton: what it takes

The vehicle stays where it is, whether that is a road beside St Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, a drive, a layby or a filling station around Over Hulton, and our van comes to it. Three answers shape the job, so first our technicians ask which fluid went in, about the amount, and whether the engine has turned over.

Then that tank is drained where the vehicle sits, and so the polluted fuel and the AdBlue come out together. A full flush counts much more with AdBlue than with petrol, since residue won't clear out by itself. Fresh diesel goes in once the fuel filter is cleaned — or replaced, if it needs to be — and after that your car is tested. Roughly half an hour on site is typical for most jobs when the engine has not run. Our equipment is explosion-proof, and so a busy forecourt is no issue, and it is hushed enough for a residential street after dark.

Clean diesel goes in to prime your system, and that is the final step. You drive off as soon as our technicians have started the engine, and it makes no difference whether the car is on a driveway around Over Hulton or in a space at Hag Fold. It's checked on new diesel to be sure it runs smoothly before our technicians head off. The entire job is done where your car is, so it never has to be taken to a workshop. You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report afterwards, which is what insurers want.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Over Hulton

Each job differs, and so no single quote is fair. What moves the cost is, first, whether the motor has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue went in; and finally where your car is and whether our van can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight spot behind St Andrew's Church Over Hulton.

That's why every call from Over Hulton starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what went in, how much, and if it's run. When they are answered, a range turns into one fixed figure.
