Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Oversetts
With AdBlue in the diesel tank, your ignition remains off and so does your engine. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water. The harm begins once it is sucked through the pump — it won't ignite, and it will not combine with diesel. If the motor has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually drained and carefully rinsed where the car sits around Oversetts. Before anything, ring us on 0333 366 0103.
What to do straight away, Oversetts: AdBlue in your diesel tank
Do these:
- Take your keys out, and so nobody switches your ignition on.
- If you are at all near moving traffic, put your hazards on.
- The empty bottle or the till receipt shows us the fluid and the amount, so don't throw it away.
- Call us from where you are. A postcode starting DE11 0, or the name of the nearest street, gets the van to you without a search.
Never do these:
- No starting your motor — not briefly, not to reposition your vehicle.
- Don't switch the ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
- No extra fuel on top. The AdBlue will not blend, so it is pointless.
- Leave it where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short way down Portchester Leys.
- By the road, don't attempt emptying it on your own.
At a forecourt in Oversetts, whether it is the BP or another one, ask the attendants to help you roll your car away from the pump. On your own driveway, do not touch it at all.
AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does
Not the engine but your exhaust is where AdBlue is meant to go. Its own tank holds it, and from there it is sprayed into the exhaust, and there it treats the gas. A fuel pump is not made to cope with it, and AdBlue was never supposed to go through one.
It doesn't combine. Once it's tipped into a tank of diesel, AdBlue behaves not at all like diesel. It is heavier than diesel, so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of your tank, which is where the pickup draws fuel from. The first thing your fuel system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a car that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Stanhope Bretby last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the easy case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of your tank, and nothing has sucked it in.
Two kinds of harm come from there. Crystals and corrosion. As the water evaporates, it leaves urea that hardens in filters and tiny channels; meanwhile, since it attacks some metals, every part it reaches suffers for as long as it stays inside. By daybreak, a car parked around Oversetts with AdBlue in its lines gets worse; if it is just in the tank, nothing changes. Diesel lubricates the injection pump and every injector as it passes; water offers none of that, which is a second kind of harm.
Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is often worse
Top up a diesel with petrol in error over at the JET, and this problem is thinned fuel. Blended through the diesel and sitting still, it is harmless at that stage; using your engine is the damage.
AdBlue in a diesel is a different matter: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all. Because it does not burn, running it through isn't an option. Whether the car sits in Castle Gresley or the centre of Oversetts, firing it up "to see" costs more with AdBlue than nearly any other mistake, and the flush counts more. The reasons: it won't stay blended, and so watering it down is impossible; and crystals and corrosion survive the next fill.
The same good news applies as with petrol. Emptying a tank is the easiest part on a fuel system, and with no running, the AdBlue remains in there — anywhere in Derbyshire the car sits.
AdBlue in a diesel tank in Oversetts: how it ends up there
Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many vehicles rests right next to the diesel filler, occasionally under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. Mostly it is not the filling station: a driver picks up a container driving home and tips it in at home.
Usually, it occurs in one of a couple of familiar ways. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up happens in a hurry outside Newhall Junior School. After work, a container goes in on a drive near Mayfair. Or someone unfamiliar with that flap refills your car in dim light, stopped in the car park outside The Lamb.
It happens most in the motors people know least: a hire car, a new car, a company car, or the second motor of a household with one diesel and one petrol. Leave it switched off: that is the first response to the same slip, wherever around Oversetts or the remainder of Derbyshire you happen to be.
Oversetts: started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank?
Then the AdBlue has left your tank. With any running time, it goes on to the injection pump and every injector, having passed via the filter and lines.
Maybe coming back from Newhall Wood, or part way across Oversetts, your motor might run lumpy, smoke, drop pace, light up your dash or stall. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart the car to check. Each start pulls more of it through.
Leave the M42, under 10 miles from Oversetts, by the first junction and park safely, rather than driving on.
How far it went counts. A couple of hundred yards across Oversetts to the car park by The Old Post Centre is a very different job from a run towards Derby, under 15 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with every mile. Tell us roughly how far it had come.
Our engineers do all of the flushing where your car has come to a stop, and once the engine has run there is more of it. When it's caught quickly, permanent damage is very rare.
What draining AdBlue from a diesel involves around Oversetts
A road beside Newhall Village Hall, a drive, a layby or a forecourt: wherever your car has stopped around Oversetts, our engineers travel to it. The job rests on three answers, which our engineers get before all else — which fluid was put in, the amount, and if the motor has turned over.
Next, emptying the tank right there takes out the contaminated diesel and the AdBlue in one go. The fuel system is flushed thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own. Clean diesel goes in after the fuel filter is flushed — or swapped, if it needs to be — and then the vehicle is tested. Roughly half an hour on site is usual for most jobs when your engine has not run. Low-noise enough for use outside a house at night, and fine on a busy forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.
Clean diesel goes in to bleed the fuel system, and that's the final step. Whether it's a parking space at Burton-On-Trent or a drive around Oversetts, that is where our technicians start the engine and you head off. The check before we head off is that it runs smoothly on clean diesel. No workshop is required at any stage, with the whole job done then and there. Afterwards, you are given the paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice and a written report from the engineer.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Oversetts
There's no fair single quote, since the jobs aren't the same. Three things shift the price: whether the engine has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue was put in, and where your car is. That last one rests on whether a van can reach it safely, and an open driveway is simpler than a tight gap behind Newhall Methodist Church.
Which fluid was put in, what quantity, and whether the engine ran: every Oversetts enquiry opens with exactly those, before any figure, never afterwards. Once they are known, a range turns into one firm number.
You get that price by phone, before anybody heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.
