Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Oxbarn
Engine off, ignition off: that's how you begin if AdBlue has got into your diesel tank. AdBlue is urea mixed in water. As it is water-based, it won't burn and never combines with diesel; damage just starts when your pump begins drawing it. Caught before your motor has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Oxbarn. Before anything, call us on 0333 366 0103.
AdBlue in the diesel tank in Oxbarn: the first few minutes
Do these:
- Pocket your keys, and that stops anyone switching the electrics on.
- If you are anywhere close to moving traffic, put the hazard lights on.
- Hold on to the till receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what went in and roughly how much.
- Ring right where you are. Say a WV3 7 postcode or the nearest street name, and no one has to search for you.
Do not:
- Shifting the car just a short way is no reason to start the engine.
- The ignition remains off: on many diesels, switching it on is enough to run your fuel pump.
- Adding extra diesel doesn't help: AdBlue settles out rather than blending.
- Never drive the vehicle anywhere, not even a short stretch along Oxbarn Avenue.
- No draining it yourself, at all, at the roadside.
Moving the vehicle away from the pumps is a job for attendants to help with, wherever Oxbarn forecourt you're on, the Esso included. If you're on your own drive, leave the vehicle precisely where it is.
AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does
AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not the motor. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to fresh it. Nothing inside an injection pump is made for this fluid — and none of that was meant to go that way.
Fuel blends; AdBlue, once poured in, won't. The behaviour is nothing like diesel's. Denser than diesel, it sinks and pools underneath it — the very place the intake draws from. Simplest of all: a vehicle that had AdBlue in Merridale last night and hasn't been started since. The AdBlue waits at the foot of your tank, undrawn — though it would be first through if the engine starts, ahead of any diesel at all.
Once it's drawn in, the damage takes two forms. It attacks certain metals found in fuel systems, working on any part it touches until it is cleared from the system. And once the water goes, the urea turns into crystals that clog filters and lodge in tiny channels. Overnight, a car sitting around Oxbarn with AdBlue through its pipework gets worse; where it's only in that tank, it doesn't. Then there is the water: it offers no lubrication to the parts that rely on it most — the injection pump and each injector.
Why AdBlue in a diesel is commonly more serious than petrol
Petrol pumped into a diesel on BP's forecourt makes your fuel watery — that is the whole problem. No damage is done while it sits put, blended into your diesel — only when your motor runs on it.
AdBlue in a diesel is another problem: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all. Because it doesn't burn, running it through is not an option. Whether the vehicle is in Penn or the heart of Oxbarn, firing it up "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than nearly any other error, and the flush matters more. Why: it won't remain mixed, so diluting it fails; and deposits and corrosion outlast the next tankful.
As with petrol, there is good news. Emptying a tank is the easiest part on a fuel system, and without start-up, the AdBlue remains in there — anywhere in West Midlands the vehicle has stopped.
AdBlue in a diesel tank in Oxbarn: how it ends up there
In dim light, two caps together — the AdBlue cap and the diesel one, now and then behind one flap — may look the same. No one means it; plenty of layouts allow it. Mostly it's not the filling station: someone buys a bottle heading home and pours it in outside the house.
It tends to happen in a couple of familiar ways. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up happens in a hurry outside Warstones Primary School. After work, a bottle is tipped in on a driveway close to Hazel Road. Or a driver new to that flap tops up your vehicle after dark, stopped in the car park outside Gunmakers Arms.
It comes up the most in a rental, a brand-new vehicle, a company vehicle, or the other vehicle in a family with both fuels — the vehicles people use the least. An identical mistake, same first step — keep it switched off — anywhere you happen to be around Oxbarn or the rest of West Midlands.
Oxbarn: started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank?
The AdBlue has left your tank, then. It's been pulled through the filter and the fuel lines, and if your engine ran for any time, it has reached the high-pressure pump and the injectors.
You may see your engine running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, perhaps on the way back from Bradmore Recreation Ground or halfway across Oxbarn. No starting it again to check: pull over when it is safe, then switch it off. Each start pulls more of that through.
On the M54, under 5 miles from Oxbarn, the first junction is where to leave, and anywhere sensible is where to park — not carrying on.
How far it went counts. A few hundred yards across Oxbarn to the car park by St Michael's Church is a very different job from a run towards Wolverhampton, under 3 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with every mile. Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.
We do all of the cleaning where your car has come to a stop, and once your engine has been started there is more of it. Permanent damage is very unusual if it's caught early.
Oxbarn: how AdBlue is cleared from a diesel
Our technicians come to the vehicle, wherever it has stopped in Oxbarn: a side street near St. Philips, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. Which fluid was put in, about the quantity, and if the motor has been run: our engineers ask first, because those decide the work.
On the spot, your tank is then drained, and both the polluted diesel and the urea leave at once. The system is rinsed thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own. Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested. Not run? Then expect roughly half an hour on site for most jobs. Explosion-proof pumps make a live forecourt sensible to work on, and they run quiet enough not to disturb the street at night.
Bleeding the system with clean diesel comes at the end. Starting the car comes next, and then you head off from where your car is parked, by Wolverhampton or on a driveway in Oxbarn. Before we leave, our engineers check it's running correctly with fresh diesel in. We do it all wherever your car has stopped, and it never has to go to a workshop. Your insurer will want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — each handed over once the job is done.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Oxbarn
Not one flat price would be fair, since each job is different. Three things move the cost: whether the engine has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue got in, and where your car is. That last one comes down to whether a van can get to it safely, and an open driveway is easier than a tight space behind Warstones Library.
What got in, how much, plus if the engine ran: each Oxbarn enquiry opens with precisely that, ahead of a figure, not after. When they are known, a range becomes a single firm number.
The quote is quoted during the call, before anyone sets off; payment happens on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. Check your insurance whilst we are on the way: many carry misfuelling cover.
