Oxclose: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

If AdBlue has got into the diesel tank, keep your engine off then leave your ignition off. Urea dissolved in water is all AdBlue is. Unlike fuel, it neither ignites nor blends, and no harm happens till your engine sucks it through. If your engine has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually drained and thoroughly flushed where the car sits in Oxclose. No step comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank in Oxclose

Do these:

  • Keys out — then nobody can switch anything on.
  • Put your hazards on if you're at all near moving traffic.
  • Hold on to the till receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what was put in and roughly how much.
  • Call us from where you are. A postcode starting NE38 0, or the name of the closest street, gets the van to you without a search.

Things not to do:

  • Don't start your motor, even for a moment to move the car.
  • Don't switch your ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding more diesel won't thin it.
  • Never drive it anywhere, not even a short stretch down Dunstanburgh Close.
  • Don't try to drain the car yourself at the kerbside.

Moving your vehicle off the pumps is a job for staff to help with, wherever Oxclose forecourt you are on, the Sainsbury's included. On your own driveway, don't move it at all.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not your engine. Stored in a separate tank, it's squirted into the exhaust stream to treat the fumes. Not one side fits the other: urea does not belong in a pump, and an injection pump cannot deal with urea.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, once poured in, will not. The behaviour is nothing like fuel's. Denser than diesel, it sinks and collects underneath it — the same spot the intake sucks from. When the pump runs, the AdBlue is first to be pulled through. Until then it sits underneath the diesel, which is why a car topped up in Ayton last night and not switched on stays the straightforward case, as long as no one touches your key.

It does two kinds of damage from there. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps labouring on the parts it hits for as long as it stays there. A motor left standing in Oxclose with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank is not. And there is the water: it brings no protection to the parts that rely on it the most — the injection pump and each injector.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is often worse

Fill a diesel with petrol by mistake over at the another forecourt nearby, and this problem is diluted fuel. No damage is done while it stays put, mixed into your diesel — only when your motor works on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different problem: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all. Since it doesn't burn, running it through is not an option. Whether the car is in Blackfell or the heart of Oxclose, turning it over "to see" costs more in this case than nearly any other mistake, and the flush matters for more. The reasons: it will not stay blended, so diluting it fails; and deposits and corrosion survive the next fill.

With AdBlue, the good news is no separate from petrol. If the motor hasn't run, the AdBlue is still inside your tank, and your tank is the simplest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever around Tyne and Wear your car is sitting.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Oxclose

Plenty of vehicles put the AdBlue filler alongside the diesel one, occasionally behind one flap, and after dark the two can appear the same. No one means it. Usually it's never the filling station: someone picks up a container heading home and tips it in at home.

It tends to take place in a few familiar ways. Hurrying, outside Oxclose Primary Academy, after a warning lamp came on during the school run, someone refills the vehicle. After work, a bottle goes in on a drive near Castle Road. Or the vehicle is topped up in the car park outside Ox &Plough, in poor light, by somebody who has never opened that flap before.

It happens most in the vehicles people know least: a hire car, a new vehicle, a company car, or the second motor of a household with one diesel and one petrol. An identical mistake, an identical first response — leave it off — anywhere you happen to be in Oxclose or the remainder of Tyne and Wear.

Already started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Oxclose?

Then the tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. Through the filter, through the pipework, and — with any running time — on to the injection pump and every injector: that is how far it travels.

You may notice the engine running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, possibly on the way back from Holley Park or halfway across Oxclose. Stop when it is safe. Switch off. Keep the car off instead of testing it again. More of that is pulled through with each start.

Leave the A194(M), under a mile from Oxclose, at the first junction and park somewhere safe, not carrying on.

Mileage matters: each mile carries the AdBlue deeper into your system, so driving for Newcastle upon Tyne, under 10 miles away, makes a far bigger job than hopping across Oxclose to the car park by Oxclose Church. Tell us roughly how far it had come.

There's more to clean out once the motor has been started, and we do all of it where the vehicle has stopped. Long-term damage is very uncommon when it's caught quickly.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around Oxclose?

The vehicle remains where it is, whether that's a road near St John Boste, a drive, a layby or a forecourt around Oxclose, and the van comes to it. Which fluid got in, about how much, plus whether your engine has been run: our technicians check first, because those decide the work.

Then your tank is emptied where the car waits, and so the contaminated fuel and the AdBlue come out together. Your system is flushed thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own. A test of the car follows last, after fresh diesel is added and your filter gets flushed or, if necessary, replaced. If your engine has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once our engineers are there. Explosion-proof pumps make a live forecourt sensible to work on, and they run quiet enough not to disturb the street at night.

Bleeding your system with clean diesel comes at the end. Whether it is a parking bay by Chester-Le-Street or a driveway around Oxclose, that is where we start it and you head off. Before leaving, our engineers check it is running correctly with clean diesel in. The entire job is done where your car is, so it never needs to be taken to a workshop. The insurer will want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — both yours afterwards.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Oxclose: the cost of fixing it

No flat figure could be honest, because each job is different. Three things move the price: whether your engine has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue was put in, and where the vehicle is. That last one rests on whether a van can get to it safely, and an open driveway is easier than a tight spot behind Washington Leisure Centre.

That's why every call from Oxclose starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what went in, how much, and whether it has run. With them, a range shrinks to one fixed figure.

You hear that price by phone, before anybody heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
