Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Pantygraig Wen: Why It Happens

Pause reading for a moment if the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and call 0333 366 0103. Usually, when the engine has not run, it is drained and fully flushed where the car is in Pantygraig Wen. If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't.

Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

Plenty of newer diesels in Pwll-Gwaun, like those in Pantygraig Wen, carry on two liquids; the engine gets just your diesel. Its own tank holds it, and from there it is sent to the exhaust, and there a spray treats the gas.

There's a filler for each tank. Under one flap, side by side: that is the layout on many motors. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler sits under the bonnet or in the boot instead. Filling your diesel side at the pump happens all the time. The AdBlue side is filled far less regularly, usually from a bottle, and usually by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes. That gap is where the slip lives.

Pantygraig Wen: how AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

On a drive off Llanwonno Road before work, or in the car park outside The Merlin on the way home: that's where the hurried top-up happens. Why the rush? As AdBlue runs low your car warns you, and once it's empty, limp mode follows.

Next, the hand reaches for the cap it knew on the old car — because a hire car, a new motor or a company car places the fillers where your last one didn't.

Lastly, the spout goes in: diesel filler or AdBlue one, it slides in just as readily, and after the tip begins, nothing halts it. Troedrhiw-Trwyn or the heart of Pantygraig Wen: it takes the same few seconds in both.

Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Look at these before pouring, on a forecourt in Pantygraig Wen or a driveway over in Graigwen. Seconds, no more.

  • Read the cap rather than going by where it sits: AdBlue caps are frequently blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps usually are not.
  • Many cars give AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.
  • A label inside the fuel flap frequently says which fuel goes where, on plenty of motors. Check for it.
  • In your boot or under the bonnet: that's where the filler sits if it is not by the diesel cap, and the handbook says which.
  • Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Pontypridd.

How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

When the light comes on, anywhere across Rhondda Cynon Taf, use this routine.

  • Switch off after you park — flat ground, engine off, and never in a rush by Pantygraigwen Road at the roadside.
  • Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and say the word "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft. It works.
  • The diesel cap stays on. Where the two sit under a flap, make sure it's shut before the bottle comes up.
  • Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.
  • Shut the cap, then check again — making sure your diesel filler stayed shut the whole time. After that, start your car.

Spot at step two or three that it's already gone into the diesel side? So stop just there. Never carry on to stage five.

Pantygraig Wen: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start your motor. Leave your ignition off too, because on plenty of diesels it by itself runs your fuel pump. Topping up with diesel will not weaken it: rather than mixing, AdBlue drops to the bottom of that tank, right where fuel is drawn from.

If you're on a forecourt, whether it is the Asda or the Sainsbury's, ask the staff to help roll the car clear of the pump. Leave it where it is if you're on your own drive in Pantygraig Wen.

If the engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off. The next exit means where to leave if you're on the M4, under 10 miles from Pantygraig Wen. Our arrival around Pantygraig Wen, and what takes place next

Anywhere the car came to rest, whether outside the local primary school, near Capel Rhondda or at home, the van comes to it. Both the work and the price rest on three replies — what liquid, which quantity, and if it's run — so we ask. You get that price on the phone, before anyone heads out.

The system is then flushed thoroughly, once the tank is cleared. AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why that matters more here than with petrol. Once the filter is cleaned — or replaced, if required — fresh diesel goes in, and then your car gets tested. Your engine is started next and tested to be sure it runs smoothly, all before our engineers head off.

With pumps fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which your motor hasn't run take roughly half an hour after our engineers arrive. You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
