AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Parbold? Don't Start It

Engine off, ignition off: that is where you start if AdBlue has got into the diesel tank. Urea mixed in water is what AdBlue is. Unlike fuel, it neither ignites nor blends, and no harm starts till the engine pulls it round. If the motor hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally emptied and carefully flushed where the car sits around Parbold. Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in the diesel tank in Parbold: the first few minutes

Things to do:

  • Keys out — then no one can power anything on.
  • Put the hazards on if you are anywhere near moving traffic.
  • Which product, and about what amount? Hang on to the bottle or the receipt, and our engineers will see.
  • Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting WN8 7, or the name of the nearest street, gets our van to you without a search.

Never do these:

  • Moving your car just a short way is no reason to start your engine.
  • Plenty of diesels power their fuel pump the instant the ignition comes on, and so leave the car off.
  • AdBlue does not mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra diesel will not weaken it.
  • Keep the car where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short stretch down Tan House Lane.
  • No emptying it yourself, either, at the roadside.

Get the attendants to help you roll the vehicle off the pumps if you're on a forecourt in Parbold, whether it's the the nearest petrol station or elsewhere. At home, your car stays exactly as it is.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

Made for the exhaust, AdBlue has no place in your motor. From a separate tank it is fed directly to your exhaust, cleaning what the engine lets out. Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is made to handle it.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, after tipped in, will not. Its behaviour is not at all like diesel's. It's heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and collects at the bottom of the tank, which is where the pickup draws fuel from. The first thing the fuel system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a car that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in High Moor last night, and has not been started since, is still the easy case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of the tank, and nothing has drawn it in.

It does two kinds of damage from there. It attacks certain metals found in fuel components, working on any part it touches until it is cleared from the system. And once the water evaporates, the urea turns into crystals that block filters and lodge in narrow channels. Where the AdBlue is in the lines, leaving it overnight around Parbold leaves things worse. Inside your tank only, time costs nothing. Water protects nothing. The injection pump and every injector need diesel running past them, and so the water part damages them in its own right.

AdBlue in a diesel: why it is regularly worse than petrol

Fill a diesel with petrol in error at the Esso, and this issue is thinned fuel. It mixes with your diesel, and while it is in the tank it causes no harm; the harm comes from running your motor on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is another matter: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all. It can't simply be run through, since it does not burn. It doesn't stay mixed, and so it cannot be thinned. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the engine "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether the vehicle is in Bispham Green or the middle of Parbold.

With AdBlue, the good news is no distinct from petrol. Anywhere in Lancashire your vehicle has come to rest, an unstarted engine means the AdBlue still in the tank: the simplest bit of a fuel system to clear.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Parbold: how it ends up there

Plenty of vehicles place the AdBlue filler alongside the diesel cap, occasionally behind a single flap, and in dim light the two may appear the same. No one intends it. A container bought when driving home and tipped in outside the house, rather than at the filling station, is the usual route.

It tends to occur in a couple of familiar ways. The top-up is hurried outside Our Lady and All Saints Roman Catholic Primary School, Parbold, after the dash flashed with a warning as the children were taken off. Close to Fairhurst Drive, someone pours a bottle in on that drive in the evening. One more pattern: dim light, a pub car park by The Windmill, and a driver opening that flap the first time.

The least known cars see it the most — rentals, new cars, company ones, and the other motor of a family with both fuel types. Leave it off: that is the first response to an identical slip, anywhere in Parbold or the rest of Lancashire you are.

Already started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank in Parbold?

Then the tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. Given any running time, it goes on to the high-pressure pump and each injector, after passing through the filter and pipework.

Lumpy running, smoke from the exhaust, dropping power, dashboard warnings or cutting out: each might show up, maybe midway across Parbold or coming back from Alder Lane Playing Fields. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart the vehicle to check. With each start, more of it is pulled through.

On the M6, under 5 miles from Parbold, the next junction is where to leave, and anywhere sensible is where to park — not carrying on.

Hopping across Parbold to the car park by Parbold Village Hall is one matter; heading towards Preston, under 15 miles away, is another, since every mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in. So mileage counts. Let us know roughly how far it had come.

Our engineers do all of the rinsing where your car has come to a stop, and once your engine has been run there is more of it. Spotted quickly, it very seldom leaves permanent damage.

Clearing AdBlue in a diesel in Parbold: what it takes

The car remains where it is, whether that's a road near Parbold Library, a driveway, a lay-by or a forecourt in Parbold, and our van comes to it. What got in, about how much, plus if your engine has been run: our technicians check first, because those shape the job.

Next, emptying that tank on the spot removes the polluted diesel along with the AdBlue together. With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, flushing matters: the fuel system is flushed all the way through because what remains won't wash out unaided. Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested. Most of these jobs are a half-hour job once our technicians get there, if your engine has not run. Low-noise enough for use outside a house at night, and safe on a busy forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

Finally, the system is bled with fresh diesel. After that we fire it up and you head off, whether from a parking bay at the nearest station or a drive around Parbold. It's tested on new diesel to be sure it runs properly before our technicians go. Since the job is done in its entirety where the car is, a workshop never comes into it. Afterwards, there is the paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice and a written report from the engineer.

Parbold and Lancashire: AdBlue drains across the area

AdBlue jobs around Parbold go to vans that serve the towns near it — Newburgh, Grimshaw Green as well as Hill Dale — and much of Lancashire beyond, throughout WN postcodes. Guessing doesn't help close to a county line or anywhere tricky to describe; ring and check.

A van that comes to you suits Parbold, a village: you have no need to take your car to us, since our engineers empty it on the spot, in a driveway, a residential street, a parking area or a forecourt.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Parbold: the cost of fixing it

There's no honest single quote, since the jobs aren't the same. Whether the engine has run, and for how long, comes first in what changes the cost. How much AdBlue got in comes next, and then the position of the car, since an open drive is simpler for a van to reach safely than a tight gap behind Original Site of Parbold Chapel.

Before a quote, never after, each enquiry from Parbold opens with the same three checks: the liquid, the quantity, and whether it ran. Those answers narrow a range right down to a single number.

You get that quote by phone, before anybody sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront. While our engineer is travelling, check your policy: many include misfuelling.
