Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Park Estate: Why It Occurs

Pause reading for a moment when the diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, and phone 0333 366 0103. A drain plus a full flush, carried out just where your vehicle stands in Park Estate, is normally all it takes if caught before the motor runs. Not happened yet? Further down, the rest of the page covers the why it takes place and the how to avoid it altogether.

Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

Plenty of newer diesels in Elm Estate, like those in Park Estate, carry on two fluids; your motor takes only the diesel. AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Separate tanks, separate fillers. On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet. The diesel side is fuelled at the pump all the time. A driver who has to stop and think where it goes normally tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less commonly. Mistakes happen in that gap between them.

Park Estate: how AdBlue in your diesel tank happens

Seldom is it carelessness: normally three things line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out completely, the car goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Towngate before work, or in the car park outside Church House on the way home.

The old car's filler is where the hand goes — but a hire car, a new vehicle or a company car keeps the fillers somewhere else. That is the second factor: a new motor.

No part halts the pour after it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits. Whether it takes place in South Kirkby or the middle of Park Estate, it's the same few seconds.

Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Check these before pouring, on a forecourt in Park Estate or a driveway out in South Elmsall. Seconds, that's all.

  • Where it sits misleads; the cap doesn't. AdBlue caps are often blue or carry the name "AdBlue" — diesel ones normally do not.
  • The size. On plenty of cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.
  • A label inside your fuel flap often shows which fuel goes where, on many motors. Check for it.
  • The handbook shows where it lives when your filler is not next to the diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.
  • Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Moorthorpe.

AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around West Yorkshire that is.

  • Turn off after you park — level ground, engine off, and never in a rush by Grove Avenue on the verge.
  • Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once you find the AdBlue filler and reading it. Silly, perhaps, but it works.
  • Both behind a single flap? Then make sure the lid on your diesel side is still closed before raising the bottle.
  • Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.
  • Shut the cap, and look again — making sure the diesel cap stayed shut throughout. After that, start the car.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there. Never go on to step five.

AdBlue in the diesel tank already, in Park Estate?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start your motor. Don't switch your ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump. AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is pulled from — so do not top up with diesel to dilute it.

The staff at the nearest petrol station, Shell or any forecourt will normally lend a hand pushing the car away if you ask. If you're on your own driveway around Park Estate, leave the vehicle where it is.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if your engine has already run. On the A1(M), under 5 miles from Park Estate, that means the next junction. Distance matters — a quick hop across Park Estate is a smaller job than heading under 10 miles towards Doncaster — so tell us about how far it went.

What happens when we get there around Park Estate

Wherever the vehicle has stopped, be it outside Northfield Primary School, beside South Kirkby & Moorthorpe Town Hall or at home, the van comes to it. What fluid got in, the amount, and if it ran: our technicians ask because the replies set both work and price. Nobody heads out before you've heard the price by phone.

Draining the tank comes next, then a full flush of the fuel system. With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own. The filter cleaned or, where needed, swapped; clean diesel in; and then a check of the vehicle. Your engine is started next and tested to confirm it runs properly, all before our engineers leave.

Using pumps safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs where your motor has not run take roughly half an hour once our technicians are there. The insurer will ask for the engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and both are yours at the end. Payment comes on the day, with no deposit. Wrong-fuel cover is included in plenty of insurance policies — and so use the wait to look at yours.
