How It Occurs and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Park Side

Pause reading for a moment when the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, then phone 0333 366 0103. Caught before the engine runs, it's normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Park Side. Nothing happened yet? Below, the rest of the page explains the why it takes place and the how to avoid it altogether.

AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Many modern diesels in Stannington, like those in Park Side, carry on two fluids; the engine takes just the diesel. AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has its own filler. Some vehicles put the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; a lot more place the two side by side behind one flap. Diesel goes in at each filling station visit, week in, week out. The AdBlue side is fuelled far less commonly, normally from a bottle, and usually by someone who has to stop and think where it goes. The slip lives in that gap.

AdBlue in your diesel tank around Park Side: how it occurs

Carelessness seldom causes it. What does is three things coming up together.

Hurry comes from the warning. Your car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank sends the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up happens in a rush, before work on a drive off Oldfield Road, or heading home in the car park outside The Peacock Inn.

Then your car is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

A spout-topped bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. So the tip, after begun, keeps on. Knowle Top or the middle of Park Side: it takes the same few seconds in both.

The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Look at these first, at a forecourt in Park Side or a driveway out in Town End. A few seconds, that's all.

  • The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually isn't. Read it rather than going by where it sits.
  • On plenty of vehicles, size gives it away: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.
  • Look inside your fuel flap: many cars have a label there saying which fuel goes where.
  • Cannot see it next to your diesel filler? Then look below the bonnet or inside your boot — the owner's manual will say which.
  • The person who drove it last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park at Sheffield, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

Anywhere across South Yorkshire the light comes on, here is a routine for the day.

  • Stop somewhere level, engine off, with time in hand — not hurried on the side of Oldfield Terrace.
  • Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after you find the AdBlue filler and reading it. Silly, yes, yet it works.
  • The diesel cap stays on. Where both sit under a flap, confirm it is shut before lifting the bottle.
  • Gently is best, through the bottle's own spout, until it is full or the bottle runs out.
  • Close the cap, and check once more — confirm the diesel filler remained closed throughout. After that, start your car.

Discover during the second or third stage that the bottle went in the wrong filler? That is where you stop. Do not go on to step five.

Park Side: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Short order, then. First: your motor stays off. The fuel pump runs on plenty of diesels as soon as the ignition goes on — and so keep it off. Thinning it with extra diesel won't work, since AdBlue settles to the base rather than mixing — and that is where your fuel is sucked from.

If you are on a forecourt, whether it's the JET or the Esso, ask the attendants to help push the vehicle clear of the pump. If you're on your own driveway in Park Side, leave the car where it is.

If the motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off. Park Side lies under 10 miles from the M1; there, use the next exit. Mileage matters — a quick hop across Park Side is a smaller job than driving under 5 miles to Sheffield — so tell us about how far it went.

Park Side: what occurs when our engineers arrive

Our technicians come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Stannington Infant School, close to Stannington Library or on your own drive. Which fluid got in, the quantity, and if it ran: our technicians ask since the replies set both work and quote. You hear that quote by phone, before anybody heads out.

Next: draining, then a thorough flush of the whole system. Not like petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and eats at certain fuel-system metals, and neither clears away unaided. That is why it counts more. The filter cleaned or, where it must be, swapped; clean diesel in; and then a check of the vehicle. The motor is started next and checked to make sure it runs correctly, all before our engineers leave.

Most jobs are finished in roughly half an hour once our engineers get there, as long as your engine hasn't run — and the pumps our technicians use are safe on a live forecourt yet quiet after dark beside a house. Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork an insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.
