Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Park Spring

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then leave the engine off — and the ignition too. Water with urea mixed in it: that's AdBlue. The trouble begins once it is pulled through your lines — it won't ignite, and it won't blend with diesel. If the motor hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally drained and carefully rinsed where your car sits in Park Spring. First, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

Park Spring, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do at once

Do these:

  • Pocket the keys, which stops someone turning the electrics on.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all near.
  • So you can give us which liquid it was and about how much, keep the till receipt or the empty bottle.
  • Call us from where you are. A postcode starting LS12 5, or the name of the closest street, brings our van to you without a search.

Things not to do:

  • Do not start the engine, even for a moment to move the vehicle.
  • Don't switch the ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • AdBlue does not dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding more diesel will not thin it.
  • Even a short distance up Greenmoor Avenue is too far to drive the car.
  • Emptying the tank on your own by the road isn't worth trying.

Ask the attendants to help you roll the car off the island if you're at a forecourt in Park Spring, whether it is the BP or elsewhere. If you are on your own drive, leave the vehicle just where it sits.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Made for your exhaust, AdBlue has no place in the engine. Stored in a separate tank, it is squirted into the exhaust to treat the fumes. Nothing in it is meant to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is made to handle it.

It doesn't combine. After it's tipped into a tank of diesel, AdBlue behaves nothing like fuel. The intake sucks fuel from the deepest part of your tank, and that is precisely where AdBlue ends up: as it is denser than diesel, it sinks. A vehicle filled on a drive in Hough Side yesterday evening and left unstarted is the straightforward one. No pump has pulled the AdBlue up yet — but once the engine runs, that is what is pulled first, straight from the bottom of that tank.

Two kinds of damage follow from there. It eats at certain metals used in fuel components, attacking whatever it reaches until it is removed completely. And once the water goes, the urea turns into crystals that clog filters and settle in narrow passages. Lines holding AdBlue mean harm by morning for a car parked around Park Spring. Just inside that tank, it stays the same. The water in it does damage of its own: your high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Park Spring

Why AdBlue in a diesel is regularly more serious than petrol

Petrol put into a diesel on Morrisons's forecourt makes the fuel watery — that is the whole issue. It mixes with your diesel, and whilst it's inside that tank it causes no damage; the harm comes from running the engine on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid itself is plainly the wrong one. It doesn't burn, so it can't simply be run through. Whether the vehicle sits in New Scarbro or the heart of Park Spring, firing it up "to see" does more harm in this case than nearly any other error, and the flush counts for more. The reasons: it will not remain mixed, so diluting it fails; and crystals and corrosion outlast the following fill.

With AdBlue, the good news is no different from petrol. Not run? Then the AdBlue sits only in your tank, the simplest bit of the whole system to empty, anywhere the car has stopped in West Yorkshire.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Park Spring

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many motors waits right next to your diesel filler, occasionally under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. Usually it's never the forecourt: someone buys a bottle driving home and pours it in at home.

It tends to happen in a couple of familiar ways. Hurrying, outside Greenhill Primary School, after a warning light came on during the school run, someone refills the vehicle. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Wood Lane. Or someone unfamiliar with that flap refills your car after dark, parked in the car park by Main Line Social Club.

It happens most in the vehicles drivers know least: a hire car, a new vehicle, a company car, or the second car of a household with one diesel and one petrol. An identical mistake, same first step — leave it off — wherever you happen to be around Park Spring or the remainder of West Yorkshire.

Park Spring: started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Then the tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. Via the fuel filter, along the lines, and — with any running — into the high-pressure pump and every injector: that's where it has gone.

Rough running, smoke from the exhaust, dropping power, dashboard lights or cutting out: any may appear, maybe part way across Park Spring or returning from Ducky Hills. Stop when it is safe. Switch off. Keep the vehicle off rather than restarting it to check. With each start, more of it is pulled through.

On the M621, under 3 miles from Park Spring, the first junction is where to leave, and anywhere safe is where to park — not driving on.

Mileage counts: each mile carries the AdBlue further into the system, and so heading for Leeds, under 5 miles away, gives a much bigger job than hopping across Park Spring to the car park by Armley leeds council office. Tell us roughly how far it had come.

Wherever your car came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to flush once your engine has been started. Very rarely does it leave long-term damage if it is caught early.

Park Spring: how AdBlue is cleared from a diesel

A road beside Bramley Lawn Day Centre, a drive, a layby or a forecourt: anywhere the vehicle has come to rest around Park Spring, our engineers come to it. Before anything else our engineers ask what went in, roughly how much, and if the engine has run, because those replies settle this work.

On the spot, that tank is then emptied, and all of the polluted diesel and the urea leave as one. A careful flush matters far more after AdBlue than with petrol, since residue will not wash out by itself. A test of your car comes last, after fresh diesel is added and the filter is flushed or, where necessary, swapped. The majority of these jobs are a half-hour job once our technicians turn up, if your motor has not run. Explosion-proof pumps mean a busy forecourt sensible to work on, and they run quiet enough not to disturb the street at night.

The last step is to bleed your system on new diesel. Firing it up comes next, and then you drive off from where your car is parked, outside Bramley (West Yorkshire) or on a drive around Park Spring. It is tested on clean diesel to make sure it runs properly before our engineers go. Our engineers do it all wherever your car has stopped, and it never has to go to a workshop. You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report afterwards, which is what insurers want.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Park Spring?

There's no honest single price, because the jobs are not the same. What moves the price is, first, whether your engine has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue went in; and then where the car is and whether a technician can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight space behind Farnley Hill Methodist Church.

Which fluid got in, what quantity, and if it ran: each Park Spring call begins with precisely those, ahead of a quote, never after. When those are known, a range becomes one fixed number.

You get that quote on the phone, before anybody heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront. Misfuelling cover is part of plenty of insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van gets there.
