Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Parkside Chase

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, the ignition stays off and so does your motor. Urea mixed in water is all AdBlue is. It does not burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the damage it does starts when the system draws it in. If your motor hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally drained and thoroughly purged where the vehicle stands in Parkside Chase. Before you do anything else, ring 0333 366 0103.

Parkside Chase, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do right away

Things to do:

  • Keys out — that way nobody can power anything on.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all near.
  • Which fluid, and about how much volume? Save the bottle or the receipt, and we will see.
  • Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting NE23 1, or the name of the nearest street, gets the van to you without a search.

Things not to do:

  • Do not start the motor, even for a moment to move the vehicle.
  • The ignition stays off: on many diesels, turning it on is enough to run the pump.
  • Adding more diesel doesn't work: AdBlue settles out instead of thinning.
  • Do not drive the car anywhere, not even a short distance along Newlyn Drive.
  • Draining the tank on your own by the road is not one to try.

The staff on duty at any Parkside Chase forecourt — the Sainsbury's among them — will normally help rolling it aside if you ask. Parked on your own driveway? Then it remains exactly where it is.

AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Not your engine but your exhaust is where AdBlue is meant to go. Stored in a dedicated tank, it is injected into the exhaust stream to treat the gases. Nothing in it is meant to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is made to handle it.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves really differently from fuel. It does not mix in. It is heavier than diesel, so it sinks and collects at the bottom of that tank, which is where the pickup pulls fuel from. The first thing your fuel system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a vehicle that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Parkside Glade last night, and has not been started since, is still the straightforward case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of the tank, and nothing has drawn it in.

Once it's sucked in, the damage comes in two forms. What is left when the water goes is urea, which forms crystals: they lodge in narrow channels and block filters. Worse, it eats at some metals in the fuel system, and keeps going until it is cleared out. By daybreak, a car sitting around Parkside Chase with AdBlue through its pipework grows worse; where it's just in the tank, nothing changes. Water lubricates nothing. The high-pressure pump and every injector need diesel running past them, and so the water part harms them by itself.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Parkside Chase

Why is AdBlue in a diesel often the bigger problem?

Put petrol in a diesel at the Magpie Service Station and you have a fault of thin fuel. Mixed through your diesel and sitting unused, it's no threat for now; running the motor does the damage.

AdBlue in a diesel is a fault of the wrong substance altogether. It cannot simply be run through, because it doesn't burn. It doesn't stay mixed, and so it can't be weakened. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the motor "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether the car is in Parkside Dale or the middle of Parkside Chase.

As with petrol, there is good news. Anywhere across Northumberland your car has stopped, an unrun motor means the AdBlue still in the tank: the easiest bit of a fuel system to empty.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Parkside Chase: how it ends up there

Plenty of vehicles place the AdBlue cap beside the diesel one, occasionally behind one flap, and in dim light the two can appear the same. No one means it. A bottle picked up while driving home and poured in outside the house, rather than at the forecourt, is the usual route.

Usually, it happens in one of a couple of familiar ways. Hurrying, outside Cramlington Shanklea Primary School, after a warning light came on during the school run, someone refills the car. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Cumbrian Road. Or a driver new to that flap refills the vehicle in dim light, parked in the car park by John The Clerk of Cramlington.

It crops up the most in a hire car, a new vehicle, a fleet vehicle, or the spare car in a home with both fuel types — the vehicles drivers know least. Wherever around Northumberland, Parkside Chase as well, the mistake does not change, and neither does the first step: leave it switched off.

Started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank in Parkside Chase?

Then your tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. Your filter and lines have had it pulled through, and some running carries it on to the high-pressure pump and each injector.

Watch for lumpy running, smoke, falling power, warnings on the dash, or a stall — returning from Former Parkside County Middle School Field, say, or midway across Parkside Chase. Once you safely can, stop then switch everything off — without turning it on again to test. More of it is pulled through with each start.

If you were on the A167(M), under 10 miles from Parkside Chase, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere sensible instead of pressing on.

Distance matters: every mile pushes the AdBlue further into your system, and so driving towards Newcastle upon Tyne, under 10 miles away, makes a much bigger job than hopping across Parkside Chase to the car park by Cramlington War Memorial. Tell us roughly how far it had come.

There is more to rinse out once the motor has been run, and our technicians do all of it where the car has stopped. Spotted soon, it very seldom leaves permanent damage.

Clearing AdBlue in a diesel around Parkside Chase: what it takes

Our engineers come to your car, wherever it has stopped around Parkside Chase: a side street near St. Nicholas' Church, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. Three replies shape the work, so before anything else our engineers ask what got in, about what quantity, plus whether your motor has run.

Then your tank is drained where your car waits, so the tainted fuel and the AdBlue come out together. A careful flush matters much more after AdBlue than with petrol, because what remains won't clear away on its own. Testing your vehicle follows at the end, once clean diesel goes in and the fuel filter is cleaned or, where needed, replaced. About half an hour on site is usual for most jobs when your engine has not run. The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

New diesel goes in to prime the system, and that's the final step. Then we start it and you set off, whether from a parking space by Cramlington or a driveway around Parkside Chase. The test before our technicians leave is that it runs smoothly on new diesel. The whole job is done where your car is, so it never has to go to a garage. At the end, there is the paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice and a written report from the engineer.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Parkside Chase: the cost of fixing it

Because the callouts differ, a flat price would not be honest. Three things move the price: whether the motor has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue was put in, and where your car is. That last one comes down to whether our van can reach it safely, and an open driveway is easier than a tight spot behind Manor Walks Shopping Centre.

Ahead of any figure, not afterwards, each enquiry from Parkside Chase opens with three checks: the liquid, the amount, and whether the engine ran. When they are known, a range becomes a single firm figure.

Before a van heads out, you are told our quote on the phone. Then you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing in advance. While our engineer is travelling, check your policy: many cover misfuelling.
