AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

No single fluid but two: that is how plenty of modern diesels near Parkside Glade and Parkside Grange run, with diesel for your engine. Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into your exhaust gas and cleans it.

Different tanks, different fillers. On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet. Filling the diesel side at the pump goes on all the time. The AdBlue side is filled far less often, normally from a bottle, and usually by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes. That gap is where the slip lives.

Parkside Glade: how AdBlue in your diesel tank occurs

Carelessness rarely causes it. What does is three things coming up at once.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the vehicle goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off B1326 before work, or in the car park outside The Plough on the way home.

Then, the hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old car — because a hire car, a new vehicle or a company car places the fillers somewhere your last one didn't.

A spouted bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, after begun, carries on. The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Parkside Glade or out in Cramlington Village.

The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a driveway in Mayfield Glade or a forecourt around Parkside Glade.

  • The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap usually is not. Read it instead of going by where it sits.
  • Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of cars, the AdBlue one.
  • Open the filler flap and check for a label — many cars show which belongs in which filler just there.
  • The handbook says which it is when the filler isn't next to your diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.
  • The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park at Cramlington, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

For the day the warning appears — anywhere you are around Northumberland — a routine to follow.

  • Stop somewhere level, motor off, with time to spare — never rushing on the side of Ringwood Drive.
  • Locate the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and speak the name "AdBlue" out loud while unscrewing it. It sounds silly. It works.
  • Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.
  • Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.
  • Only then, start the car: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Find during the second or third step that the bottle went in the wrong filler? That's where you stop. Don't carry on to step five.

AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around Parkside Glade?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start your engine. On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so don't switch the vehicle on. Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is pulled from.

Ask the attendants to help roll your car away from the petrol pump if you are on a forecourt — the Sainsbury's, the Magpie Service Station or anywhere else. At home around Parkside Glade? Then your car stays where it is.

Already run? Pull over when it is safe, then switch off. The next junction means where to leave when you are on the A167(M), under 10 miles from Parkside Glade. A short hop across Parkside Glade is a smaller job than a run towards Newcastle upon Tyne, under 10 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

When we turn up around Parkside Glade, what happens?

We come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside Cramlington Shanklea Primary School, near Cramlington Village Community Centre or on your own driveway. Both the work and our price rest on three answers — which fluid, what amount, and if it's run — so we ask. Nobody sets off before you have heard the quote over the phone.

The fuel system is then cleaned thoroughly, once the tank is cleared. Much more than with petrol, it counts with AdBlue: crystals form, some metals corrode, and none of that clears away on its own, no matter how long it sits. Once the fuel filter is cleaned — or replaced, if needed — fresh diesel goes in, and finally your vehicle is tested. We don't leave until it has been fired up and is running correctly.

Most jobs are finished in about half an hour once our technicians get there, provided your engine hasn't run — and the pumps our technicians use are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet at night beside a house. Your insurer will ask for the engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and you get both once the job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no deposit. It's worth looking at your policy as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover is included with plenty of policies.
