Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Parton

With AdBlue in the diesel tank, your ignition stays off and so does your motor. Water with urea dissolved in it: that's AdBlue. It doesn't burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the harm it does starts when your fuel system pulls it in. If your motor hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally drained and carefully purged where the vehicle sits around Parton. Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank in Parton

Do:

  • Pull the keys out, so no one switches the ignition on.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere near.
  • Which fluid, and roughly what amount? Save the bottle or the receipt, and we will see.
  • Ring just where you are. Quote a CA7 0 postcode or the closest street name, and no one has to search for you.

Don't do these:

  • Not even for a second, and not to roll your vehicle: the motor remains off.
  • Turning the key to ignition alone sets the pump going on plenty of diesels. Skip it.
  • AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra fuel won't weaken it.
  • Even a short distance up A596 is too far to drive the car.
  • Don't try to drain the car yourself by the roadside.

At a forecourt around Parton, whether it is the BP or another one, ask the staff to help you push your car away from the pump. At your own driveway, don't move it at all.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Not your engine but the exhaust is where AdBlue is meant to go. From a separate reservoir it is fed directly to the exhaust, treating what your motor emits. Not one side fits the other: urea does not belong in a pump, and a pump can't take urea.

Inside a diesel tank it acts very differently from fuel. It does not mix in. It drops, because it's heavier than diesel, and settles down where the pickup draws its supply from. Easiest of all: one that got AdBlue in Moorhouse last night and has not been started since. The liquid waits at the base of that tank, undrawn — though it will be the first thing through once the engine runs, before any diesel at all.

Once it is drawn in, the harm comes in two forms. It attacks certain metals used in fuel components, working on any part it touches till it is removed completely. And when the water evaporates, the urea turns into crystals that clog filters and settle in narrow passages. A car left sitting around Parton with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank isn't. And there's the water: it brings no protection to the components that rely on it most — the high-pressure pump and each injector.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is often worse

Put petrol in a diesel at the another forecourt nearby and you have an issue of thin fuel. Harm only comes from driving on it. Blended into your diesel and left in your tank, it causes nothing.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a totally wrong substance. It does not burn, so it can't just be run through. Deposits and corrosion remain through the following fill, and AdBlue separates again out of your diesel, so thinning it can't help. Hence the flush matters more, and turning your key "to see" costs more with AdBlue than almost any other mistake — in Rosewain or the centre of Parton alike.

As with petrol, there's good news. Clearing a tank is the simplest job on any fuel system, and with no running, the AdBlue remains in it — anywhere across Cumbria your car has stopped.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Parton: how it ends up there

Many motors place the AdBlue filler alongside the diesel cap, now and then under a single flap, and in dim light the two can appear the same. No one means it. It usually occurs at home, from a bottle grabbed en route home, rather than at the filling station.

Usually, it happens in one of a couple of familiar ways. Hurrying, outside St Cuthbert's Catholic Primary School, after a warning lamp flashed on during the school run, a parent refills your car. Close to Wigton Bypass, a driver tips a bottle in on that drive in the evening. Or your car is topped up in the car park at the pub in the village, in poor light, by someone who has never opened that flap before.

It crops up the most in a rental, a brand-new vehicle, a company vehicle, or the spare car in a home with one of each fuel types — the vehicles people know least. Leave it off: that's the first step to an identical mistake, wherever around Parton or the rest of Cumbria you happen to be.

AdBlue in the diesel tank in Parton, and the engine started?

Then the AdBlue has left that tank. It has been sucked through the filter and the lines, and if the engine ran for any time, it has reached the high-pressure fuel pump and your injectors.

Expect rough running, smoke, lost power, warnings on the dash, or a cut-out — returning from Bank Wood, say, or part way across Parton. Once safe, stop and switch it off — with no restarting to test. Each start pulls more of that through.

Exit the M6, under 10 miles from Parton, at the next junction and stop somewhere safe, rather than driving on.

How far it went matters. A few hundred yards across Parton to the car park by Knox Wood Wildlife Centre is a very different job from a run towards Carlisle, under 10 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with every mile. Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

Our engineers do all of the cleaning where your car has come to a stop, and once your engine has been run there is more of it. When it is spotted early, lasting damage is very unusual.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around Parton?

Our engineers come to the vehicle, wherever it has stopped around Parton: a side street close to St Andrew, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. The job rests on three replies, and we get before all else — what was put in, the amount, and whether the motor has turned over.

The contaminated diesel and the urea come out together after your tank is drained, right there. With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, the flush counts: the fuel system is flushed all the way through because residue won't flush out unaided. Clean diesel goes in once your filter is flushed — or swapped, when it needs to be — and after that the vehicle is tested. If the motor hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there. Quiet enough for use outside a house at night, and fine on a busy forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

Clean diesel goes in to prime your system, and that is the last step. You head off as soon as our technicians have started it, and it makes no difference whether your car is on a driveway around Parton or in a bay by Wigton. Before we go, our technicians confirm it's running smoothly with clean diesel in. The entire job is done where the car is, so it never has to be taken to a workshop. The insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — both yours afterwards.

Parton and Cumbria: AdBlue drains across the area

Micklethwaite, Thornby and Down Hall are among the towns around Parton that the same vans serve, together with much of Cumbria beyond, over the CA postcode area. Phone and ask rather than guess when you're by a county line, or somewhere awkward to explain.

A van that comes to you suits Parton, a rural hamlet: you have no need to bring your vehicle to us, since we drain it there, in a driveway, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Parton?

Since each callouts differ, a single figure wouldn't be honest. Three things change the price: whether the motor has run and for how long, how much AdBlue was put in, and where the vehicle is. That last one turns on whether a van can get to it safely, and an open drive is simpler than a tight gap behind Greenwood House Folly.

For that in mind, every enquiry from Parton opens with the identical trio — which fluid was put in, how much, if the engine ran — ahead of a quote. When they are answered, a range becomes a single fixed figure.

Quoted by phone before the engineer heads out, it is settled on the day — card or phone, no deposit. Misfuelling cover comes with many insurance policies, so it pays to look at yours before the van arrives.
