AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Pegwell? Keep It Switched Off

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, the ignition remains off and so does the engine. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water. It doesn't burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the harm it does starts when the system draws it in. In Pegwell, AdBlue in a diesel tank caught before the motor runs normally means a drain and a thorough flush, just where the vehicle is. Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in your diesel tank around Pegwell: the first few minutes

To do:

  • Pull the keys out, so nobody switches the ignition on.
  • Close to moving traffic? Then put the hazard lights on.
  • So you can give us which fluid it was and roughly how much, keep the till receipt or the empty bottle.
  • Call right where you are. Say a CT11 0 postcode or the closest street sign, and no one has to hunt for you.

Not to do:

  • Not even for a second, and not to shift the vehicle: your engine remains off.
  • Don't switch the ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • Pouring in more diesel doesn't help: AdBlue settles out instead of blending.
  • Even a short distance down Silverdale Road is too far to drive the car.
  • Beside the road, don't attempt draining it on your own.

Moving your vehicle away from the island is a job for attendants to help with, whichever Pegwell forecourt you are on, the Shell included. If you are on your own drive, leave it just where it sits.

AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Not the engine but your exhaust is where AdBlue belongs. Kept in a dedicated tank, it is injected into the exhaust stream to clean the fumes. A fuel pump is not made to cope with it, and AdBlue was never supposed to travel through one.

Inside a diesel tank it acts really differently from fuel. It does not mix in. The pickup takes fuel from the lowest part of your tank, and that's exactly where AdBlue settles: being denser than diesel, it sinks. Easiest of all: one that got AdBlue in Newington overnight and has not been started since. The AdBlue sits at the foot of your tank, undrawn — but it will be first through once your engine runs, ahead of any diesel at all.

Once it is pulled in, the damage takes two forms. What is left once the water evaporates is urea, which forms crystals: they settle in tiny channels and block filters. Worse, it attacks certain metals in the fuel system, and carries on until it is cleared out. A car left sitting around Pegwell with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank is not. The water in it causes damage of its own: the high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Pegwell

AdBlue in a diesel: why it's commonly worse than petrol

Put petrol in a diesel at the BP and you have a fault of thin fuel. It mixes with your diesel, and while it is in that tank it does no damage; the damage comes from running the motor on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different problem: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all. Not burning, it can't simply be run through. Whether your car is in Ramsgate or the heart of Pegwell, turning it over "to see" does more harm in this case than nearly any other mistake, and the flush counts more. The reasons: it will not remain mixed, and so watering it down fails; and deposits and corrosion outlast the following tankful.

The good news is the same as with petrol. Never started? Then the AdBlue sits only inside that tank, the simplest section of the entire system to clear, anywhere your vehicle has stopped in Kent.

Pegwell: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many vehicles waits right next to your diesel filler, occasionally under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. A bottle picked up when driving home and tipped in outside the house, instead of at the forecourt, is the usual route.

The ways it takes place are few and familiar. The top-up is hurried outside Chilton Primary School, after your dash lit up with a warning as the children were taken in. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Pegwell Road. Or a driver unfamiliar with that flap refills the vehicle after dark, parked in the car park outside Sir Stanley Gray.

It occurs most in the vehicles motorists know least: a hire car, a new car, a company car, or the second vehicle of a household with one diesel and one petrol. Leave it switched off: that's the first response to the same slip, wherever in Pegwell or the remainder of Kent you are.

Pegwell: started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer inside the tank. Given any running time, it travels to the injection pump and every injector, after passing via the fuel filter and pipework.

You may see your motor running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, possibly on the way back from Courtstairs Park or halfway across Pegwell. No starting it again to test: stop once safe, then turn it off. Every start pulls more of it through.

On the M20, under 25 miles from Pegwell, the next junction is where to exit, and anywhere sensible is where to park — not carrying on.

A quick hop across Pegwell to the car park by Southwood Stadium is one matter; driving for Canterbury, under 15 miles away, is another, because each mile pushes the AdBlue further in. So mileage counts. Let us know about how far it had come.

Our technicians do all of the cleaning where your car has come to a stop, and once the motor has been started there is more of it. Lasting damage is very uncommon when it's caught early.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around Pegwell?

The vehicle stays where it is, whether that is a street near Hands & Molecule, a driveway, a lay-by or a filling station in Pegwell, and the van comes to it. Which fluid got in, about the quantity, and if your motor has been run: our technicians check before all else, since those shape the job.

Then your tank is emptied where the car stands, and so the tainted fuel and the AdBlue come out together. Residue from AdBlue won't wash out by itself, so the fuel system gets a careful flush, which matters far more with urea than for petrol. Clean diesel goes in after the filter is flushed — or swapped, when it needs to be — and then the car is tested. The majority of these jobs are a half-hour visit once our technicians turn up, provided the engine hasn't run. Our equipment is explosion-proof, and so a busy filling station is no fault, and it's hushed enough for a residential street after dark.

The final step is to bleed your system on new diesel. You head off as soon as we have started it, and it makes no difference whether the car is on a drive around Pegwell or in a space by Ramsgate. The test before we leave is that it runs smoothly on clean diesel. Because the job is done in full where the vehicle is, a garage never comes into it. Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both afterwards.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Pegwell: the cost of fixing it

There's no fair single price, because the jobs are not the same. Whether the motor has been running, and for how long, comes first in what changes the cost. How much AdBlue went in comes next, and then the location of the car, since an open driveway is easier for a van to get to safely than a tight space behind Caesar's Invasion Site.

What went in, what quantity, and whether it ran: every Pegwell enquiry begins by asking precisely that, ahead of any quote, never afterwards. When they are known, a range turns into one firm number.

Before anyone heads out, you hear our price on the phone. Then payment is on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing in advance. While the van is on the way, dig out your policy: many include misfuelling.
