AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Pellon? Keep It Switched Off

Motor off, ignition off: that's where you start if AdBlue has got into your diesel tank. Chemically, AdBlue is simply urea in water. The harm starts once it is pulled through the pump — it won't ignite, and it will not combine with diesel. In Pellon, AdBlue in a diesel tank found before your motor runs usually means a drain and a thorough flush, just where the car is. Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

What to do right now, Pellon: AdBlue in your diesel tank

Things to do:

  • Pocket the keys, and that prevents anyone switching the electrics on.
  • Near moving traffic? Then put the hazards on.
  • Keep the receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what got in and about how much.
  • Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting HX2 0, or the name of the closest street, brings the van to you without a search.

Do not do these:

  • Not even briefly, and not to roll the vehicle: the engine stays off.
  • Many diesels power their pump the moment your ignition comes on, and so keep the car off.
  • AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra diesel will not weaken it.
  • Any driving at all is best avoided, including a short distance down Ashville Gardens.
  • By the road, don't try draining it yourself.

Rolling the car off the island is a job for attendants to help with, whichever Pellon forecourt you are on, the Asda included. At home, your car remains exactly where it was left.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

Meant for the exhaust, AdBlue has no business in your engine. Its own tank keeps it, and from there it's sprayed into your exhaust, where it treats the gas. Nothing in it is meant to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is built to handle it.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, after poured in, will not. Its behaviour is nothing like diesel's. It sinks, because it's denser than diesel, and pools low where the pickup draws its fuel from. A motor topped up on a driveway in Highroad Well yesterday evening and not started since is the straightforward case. No pump has sucked the AdBlue up yet — though once the engine runs, that's what is pulled first, directly from the bottom of the tank.

After it's drawn in, the damage takes two forms. It eats at certain metals found in fuel systems, working on any part it touches till it's cleared completely. And once the water evaporates, the urea turns into crystals that block filters and lodge in tiny passages. By daybreak, a car parked around Pellon with AdBlue in its lines grows worse; if it is only inside your tank, it doesn't. Diesel protects the high-pressure pump and each injector as it flows; water offers no lubrication, which is a second form of harm.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is often worse

A problem of thinned fuel is what you end up with from fuelling a diesel with petrol from the another forecourt nearby. No harm is done while it sits put, blended into your diesel — only once the motor runs on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is another matter: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all. It doesn't burn, and so it cannot simply be run through. Crystals and corrosion remain through the next fill, and AdBlue separates back from your diesel, so thinning it won't work. That is why the flush matters so much, and turning the key "to see" costs more here than almost any other slip — in Norton Tower or the heart of Pellon alike.

As with petrol, there's good news. Wherever across West Yorkshire your vehicle has stopped, an unrun engine leaves the AdBlue still in the reservoir: the easiest part of a fuel system to empty.

Pellon: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

In dim light, two caps together — the AdBlue one and the diesel cap, occasionally under a single flap — can look the same. Nobody means it; plenty of designs invite it. Most of the time it takes place with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the pump.

Usually, it happens in one of a couple of familiar ways. Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside Christ Church Pellon CofE VC Primary School the refill is hurried. A driver pours the bottle in at home, right off Moor End Road, as the day ends. One more pattern: dim light, a pub car park by Long Can Hall, and a driver using that flap the first time.

The least known cars see it the most — hire cars, brand-new cars, company cars, and the spare motor in a home with both fuels. An identical mistake, same first step — keep it off — wherever you happen to be around Pellon or the remainder of West Yorkshire.

Pellon: started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then the AdBlue has left your tank. Given any running, it travels to the high-pressure pump and every injector, having passed through the filter and lines.

Watch for rough running, exhaust smoke, lost power, warnings on your dash, or a cut-out — returning from West End Golf Club, say, or part way across Pellon. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart it to check. Each start pulls more of that through.

Leave the M62, under 5 miles from Pellon, by the first junction and park safely, rather than driving on.

Distance matters: every mile carries the AdBlue deeper into the system, and so driving towards Bradford, under 10 miles away, gives a much larger job than crossing Pellon to the car park by St Columba's Church. Let us know roughly how far it had come.

There is more to flush once the engine has run, and we do all of it where the car has come to a stop. When it is spotted early, lasting damage is very rare.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Pellon?

Wherever it has come to rest around Pellon — a filling station, a layby, a driveway, a road by Christ Church — the van comes to your car. The job depends on three replies, which our engineers ask for before all else — which fluid got in, the amount, and if the engine has turned over.

Then the tank is emptied where your car stands, so the tainted fuel and the AdBlue come out together. What remains from AdBlue will not flush away by itself, and so the fuel system gets a careful flush, which counts much more with urea than with petrol. The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the car is tested. Most of these jobs are a half-hour job once our technicians get there, if your engine hasn't run. The equipment is explosion-proof, so a live forecourt is no fault, and it is quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

Bleeding the system with fresh diesel comes at the end. Whether it is a parking bay outside Sowerby Bridge or a driveway around Pellon, that is where our technicians start the engine and you head off. We check it runs smoothly on fresh diesel before leaving. The whole job is done where your car is, so it never has to go to a workshop. The insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — each handed over once the job is done.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Pellon

Not one flat figure would be honest, because every job differs. The price changes first with how long, if at all, your engine has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that got in. After that it turns on where your car is and whether a technician can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight spot behind Pellon Baptist Church.

Ahead of a figure, never afterwards, each enquiry from Pellon begins with three checks: the liquid, the quantity, and if the engine ran. When they are known, a range becomes a single firm number.

You hear that price on the phone, before anybody heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. Check your policy whilst we are on the way: plenty include misfuelling cover.
