AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Pengam? Don't Start It

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then keep your motor off — and the ignition as well. In plain terms, AdBlue is just urea in water. Not like fuel, it neither ignites nor mixes, and nothing happens until your motor sucks it round. A drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Pengam, is normally what AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it is caught before your engine has been run. Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in the diesel tank in Pengam: the first few minutes

Do:

  • So no one can switch the ignition on, take the keys away.
  • Put the hazards on if you're anywhere close to moving traffic.
  • Which product, and about how much quantity? Save the bottle or the till receipt, and our engineers will know.
  • Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting NP12 3, or the name of the nearest street, gets the van to you without a search.

Things not to do:

  • Not even briefly, and not to roll your car: your motor stays off.
  • Switching your key to ignition alone sets the pump going on plenty of diesels. Avoid it.
  • AdBlue does not dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra fuel won't thin it.
  • Even a short stretch along Ivor Street is too far to drive it.
  • Don't try to drain the vehicle yourself by the roadside.

On a forecourt around Pengam, whether it's the the nearest petrol station or another one, ask the attendants to help you roll your car clear of the pump. On your own driveway, don't touch it at all.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

Made for your exhaust, AdBlue has no business in your engine. From a dedicated tank it is fed directly to the exhaust, cleaning what your motor lets out. No part in an injection pump is designed for this fluid — and none of that was intended to go that way.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, after poured in, won't. The behaviour is not at all like diesel's. Denser than diesel, it sinks and collects underneath it — the same place the pickup sucks from. When the system runs, the AdBlue is top of the list to be pulled through. Until then it waits beneath your diesel, and that is how a vehicle topped up in Cefn Hengoed last night and not switched on stays the simple one, as long as no one touches the key.

Two kinds of damage come from there. What remains once the water goes is urea, which turns into crystals: they lodge in narrow channels and clog filters. On top of that, it eats at some metals in the fuel system, and carries on till it's flushed out. A car left standing around Pengam with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank isn't. Water lubricates nothing. The injection pump and every injector need diesel running through them, and so the water part damages them by itself.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Pengam

AdBlue in a diesel: why it is frequently worse than petrol

A problem of thin fuel is what you get from filling a diesel with petrol at the Texaco. Damage only comes from running on it. Mixed into your diesel and left inside the tank, it causes none.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely unsuitable substance. It cannot simply be run through, since it doesn't burn. Crystals and corrosion stay through the following fill, and AdBlue separates again out of the diesel, so thinning it can't work. That is why the flush counts more, and trying your engine "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than nearly any other mistake — in Cefn Fforest or the heart of Pengam equally.

With AdBlue, the good news is no separate from petrol. Not run? Then the AdBlue waits just in the tank, the simplest bit of the entire system to empty, anywhere the car has stopped in Caerphilly.

How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank in Pengam?

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of motors waits right next to your diesel filler, sometimes under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. Mostly it takes place with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the forecourt.

Usually, it occurs in one of a few familiar ways. The top-up gets rushed outside the local primary school, after the dash lit up with a warning as the kids were taken in. Near High Street, someone pours a container in at home after work. Or a driver new to that flap tops up the car in dim light, stopped in the car park outside The Majors.

Hired vehicles, new cars, fleet vehicles, or the second car in a family with both fuels: the least known cars see it the most. Anywhere around Caerphilly, Pengam as well, the slip doesn't change, and neither does the first step: keep it switched off.

Pengam: started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then the AdBlue has left your tank. Given any running, it goes on to the injection pump and every injector, after passing via the fuel filter and lines.

Perhaps coming back from Cefn Fforest Eco Park, or midway across Pengam, the engine might go rough, smoke, lose pace, light up the dash or cut out. When you safely can, stop then turn everything off — without turning it on again to see. Each start pulls more of it through.

On the M4, under 10 miles from Pengam, the first junction is where to exit, and anywhere sensible is where to park — not driving on.

Every mile carries the AdBlue further in. That's why crossing Pengam to park near Pengam Cenotaph and a drive of under 15 miles for Newport are such different jobs. Tell us roughly how far it had come.

Once your engine has been run, the flush takes in more, and all of it is done where the vehicle has stopped. Spotted early, it very rarely leaves lasting damage.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around Pengam?

The vehicle stays where it is, whether that's a street beside Spirit of the Stream, a driveway, a lay-by or a forecourt in Pengam, and our van travels to it. Before anything else our technicians ask what went in, roughly how much, and whether the motor has been run, because those replies decide the work.

Next, draining that tank right there takes out the polluted diesel along with the AdBlue together. What remains from AdBlue won't flush away unaided, so the fuel system gets a full flush, which counts far more with urea than for petrol. Testing the car comes at the end, once clean diesel goes in and the fuel filter gets flushed or, where necessary, replaced. Not run? Then expect roughly half an hour on site for most jobs. The pumps are explosion-proof, safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Finally, the system is bled with new diesel. At that point we fire it up and you drive off, whether from a parking space outside the nearest station or a drive around Pengam. Our engineers confirm it runs properly on new diesel before we go. Our technicians do it all wherever your car has stopped, and it never needs to be taken to a workshop. You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report later on, which is what insurers want.

AdBlue drains across Caerphilly, Pengam included

The teams that answer AdBlue call-outs around Pengam also cover the spots round it, Fleur-de-lis, Tir-y-berth and Glan-y-nant among them, and most of Caerphilly beyond, across the NP postcode area. Phone and ask instead of guessing if you're close to a county line, or anywhere awkward to pin down.

No towing is needed. In Pengam, a village, a mobile service fits: your vehicle is drained where it stands, whether in a driveway, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Pengam

Because the jobs vary, a single figure would not be fair. The cost changes first with how long, if at all, your engine has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that got in. After that it rests on where the vehicle is and whether a van can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight space behind Nazereth Chapel.

Before any quote, never afterwards, each call from Pengam begins with three checks: the liquid, the amount, plus if it ran. With those replies, a range shrinks to one fixed figure.

Priced on the call before the engineer heads out, it is settled on the day — card or phone, no deposit. While the van is on the way, dig out your insurance: plenty include misfuelling.
