AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Pillwell? Don't Start It
Engine off, ignition off: that is how you begin if AdBlue has gone into the diesel tank. Chemically, AdBlue is simply urea in water. Not like fuel, it neither ignites nor blends, and nothing happens till your engine pulls it through. Caught before the engine has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Pillwell. Before anything, call us on 0333 366 0103.
What to do straight away, Pillwell: AdBlue in the diesel tank
Do:
- Keys out — that way nobody can switch anything on.
- If you are anywhere close to moving traffic, put the hazard lights on.
- The empty bottle or the till receipt shows us the product and the amount, and so do not throw it out.
- Give us a postcode starting DT10 1, or whichever street is closest, and the van reaches you straight — so call wherever you stand.
Do not do these:
- Shifting your vehicle just a few yards is no reason to start your motor.
- Many diesels run their pump the instant the ignition comes on, and so keep the car off.
- No extra fuel added. The AdBlue won't blend, so it is wasted.
- Keep the vehicle where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short stretch down Nash Lane.
- By the road, do not try draining it on your own.
The staff working at any Pillwell forecourt — the G&A Cook among them — will usually lend a hand rolling it clear if you ask. On your own drive, do not move it at all.
AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does
AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not the engine. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to clean it. Neither side suits the other: urea doesn't belong in a pump, and an injection pump cannot take urea.
Inside a diesel tank it behaves really differently from fuel. It does not mix in. It is heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and collects at the bottom of your tank, which is where the pickup sucks fuel from. A vehicle topped up on a drive in Walton Elm overnight and left unstarted counts as the straightforward case. Nothing has pulled the AdBlue up yet — though once your motor runs, that's what is pulled first, directly from the bottom of your tank.
Two kinds of harm come from there. What remains once the water goes is urea, which forms crystals: they settle in narrow channels and block filters. On top of that, it eats at some metals in a fuel system, and keeps going till it is cleared out. A car left standing around Pillwell with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank is not. Water lubricates nothing. The high-pressure pump and every injector depend on diesel running through them, and so the water content harms them in its own right.
AdBlue in a diesel: why it is commonly worse than petrol
Petrol pumped into a diesel on Murco's forecourt makes the fuel thin — that's the main problem. It mixes with your diesel, and while it's in that tank it does no damage; the damage comes from running the motor on it.
With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid itself is simply the wrong one. Not burning, it can't just be run through. Nor can it be watered down, because it separates again — and the following tankful won't rinse away deposits or corrosion. So the flush matters more with AdBlue, and trying the engine "to see", in the centre of Pillwell or out in Gannetts, costs more than nearly any other error.
With AdBlue, the good news is no separate from petrol. Clearing a tank is the simplest job on any fuel system, and with no start-up, the AdBlue remains in it — wherever in Dorset the car has stopped.
AdBlue in a diesel tank around Pillwell: how it ends up there
Many cars place the AdBlue filler beside the diesel one, now and then behind one flap, and in dim light the two may appear the same. No one intends it. Most of the time it happens with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the forecourt.
Mostly, it takes place in one of a few familiar ways. Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside St Gregory's Church of England Primary School, Marnhull the refill is rushed. Near Pilwell, a driver pours a bottle in on the drive after work. Otherwise, in dim light by Crown Inn, the car gets topped up by someone using that flap for the first time.
The least known vehicles get it the most — rentals, new ones, fleet cars, and the other vehicle in a home with one of each fuel types. An identical slip, an identical first step — keep it switched off — anywhere you are around Pillwell or the rest of Dorset.
Started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Pillwell?
Then your tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. The fuel filter and pipework have had it sucked along, and any running takes it on to the injection pump and each injector.
Watch for lumpy running, smoke, lost power, warnings on your dash, or a cut-out — coming back from Marnhull Recreation Ground, perhaps, or midway across Pillwell. Stop when safe. Switch off. Keep the car off rather than restarting it to check. Every start pulls more of that through.
If you were on the M5, under 50 miles from Pillwell, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere sensible rather than pressing on.
Hopping across Pillwell to the car park by Marnhull Village Hall is one thing; heading for Wells, under 25 miles away, is another, since each mile pushes the AdBlue further in. So mileage counts. About how far it had come is worth telling us.
Wherever the vehicle came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to clean out after the engine has been run. Lasting damage is very uncommon when it is spotted early.
What clearing AdBlue from a diesel involves in Pillwell
The car remains where it is, whether that is a road beside St. Gregory's, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt in Pillwell, and our van travels to it. Three answers shape the work, and so first we ask what went in, roughly the amount, plus if the engine has turned over.
Next, draining the tank on the spot takes out the polluted diesel along with the AdBlue together. What remains from AdBlue will not flush away by itself, so the whole system gets a careful flush, which counts far more with urea than with petrol. A test of the car comes at the end, after clean diesel goes in and your filter is cleaned or, if needed, swapped. Engine not run? In that case expect roughly half an hour on site for most jobs. Low-noise enough to use outside a house at night, and safe on a working forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.
Clean diesel goes in to prime your system, and that is the final step. Whether it is a parking space by Gillingham (Dorset) or a driveway around Pillwell, that is where our engineers fire it up and you set off. Our engineers check it runs properly on fresh diesel before leaving. No workshop is required at any point, with the entire job done then and there. Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come at the end.

Pillwell: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix
There is no fair single quote, because the jobs aren't the same. What moves the cost is, first of all, whether the engine has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue went in; and finally where the car is and whether a technician can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight space behind St Andrew.
That's why every call from Pillwell starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what went in, how much, and whether it's run. The answers turn a range into a straight price.
You get that price on the phone, before anyone sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.
