Pilmuir: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

With AdBlue in the diesel tank, your ignition stays off and so does the engine. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water. Unlike fuel, it neither ignites nor mixes, and nothing starts until your engine sucks it through. In Pilmuir, AdBlue in a diesel tank found before your engine runs usually means a drain and a thorough flush, right where your car is. Before you do anything else, ring 0333 366 0103.

Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank around Pilmuir

Things to do:

  • So nobody can turn your ignition on, pull the keys away.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all close.
  • So you can give us which fluid it was and roughly how much, keep the till receipt or the empty bottle.
  • Ring right where you are. Quote a IV36 2 postcode or the nearest street sign, and no one has to hunt for you.

Things not to do:

  • Don't start the engine, even for a moment to shift the car.
  • Your ignition stays off: on many diesels, turning it on is enough to start the pump.
  • Adding more diesel doesn't help: AdBlue settles out rather than thinning.
  • Leave it where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short distance up Balnageith Rise.
  • Beside the road, do not try emptying it on your own.

Rolling your car off the island is a job for attendants to help with, whichever Pilmuir forecourt you are on, the Esso included. At your own driveway, don't touch it at all.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

Meant for your exhaust, AdBlue has no place in the engine. Its own reservoir keeps it, and from there it's fed into your exhaust, and there it treats the gas. No part in an injection pump is designed for this fluid — and none of it was intended to travel through one.

It doesn't blend. Once it's poured into a tank of diesel, AdBlue acts nothing like diesel. Denser than diesel, it sinks and pools below it — the very spot the intake draws from. Simplest of all: one that had AdBlue in Forres last night and hasn't been started since. The AdBlue waits at the base of your tank, undrawn — though it will be first through if your motor runs, before any diesel at all.

From there it does two kinds of damage. It attacks some metals found in fuel systems, attacking whatever it reaches until it's cleared from the system. And once the water goes, the urea turns into crystals that clog filters and lodge in tiny passages. Overnight, a vehicle sitting in Pilmuir with AdBlue in its lines gets worse; if it is only in your tank, nothing changes. And there is the water: it offers no lubrication to the parts that need it the most — the injection pump and every injector.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Pilmuir

Why is AdBlue in a diesel regularly the bigger fault?

An issue of thin fuel is what you end up with from fuelling a diesel with petrol from the Sea Park Filling Station. Mixed through your diesel and left unused, it's harmless at that stage; running your motor does the damage.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different problem: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all. Because it does not burn, running it through is not an option. It does not stay mixed, and so it cannot be diluted. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the engine "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether the vehicle is in Broom of Moy or the middle of Pilmuir.

The same good news applies as with petrol. Wherever in Moray the vehicle has come to rest, an unstarted engine leaves the AdBlue still inside the reservoir: the simplest part of a fuel system to clear.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Pilmuir

It is not deliberate. Plenty of cars keep the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel inlet, occasionally under a single flap, and muddling them up is simple in poor light. It mostly takes place at home, from a bottle grabbed on the journey home, not at the filling station.

Usually, it occurs in one of a couple of familiar ways. Rushing, outside the local primary school, after a warning lamp came on during the school run, a parent refills the car. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Balnageith Gardens. Another pattern: dim light, a pub car park outside Thistle Bar, and someone using that flap the first time.

It comes up the most in a rental, a brand-new car, a company vehicle, or the other car in a home with both fuel types — the vehicles drivers know least. An identical mistake, same first response — keep it off — anywhere you happen to be in Pilmuir or the remainder of Moray.

Already started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank in Pilmuir?

Then your tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. With any running time, it goes on to the high-pressure pump and each injector, after passing through the fuel filter and pipework.

Rough running, smoke, dropping power, dashboard warnings or stalling: any might appear, maybe part way across Pilmuir or coming back from Logie Park. Pull over when it is safe. Switch off. Leave the vehicle off rather than restarting it to check. Each start pulls more of that through.

On the M90, over 50 miles from Pilmuir, the next junction is where to leave, and somewhere safe is where to stop — not driving on.

How far it went matters. A few hundred yards across Pilmuir to the car park by Forres Flood Scheme Opening Memorial is a very different job from a run towards Inverness, under 25 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with every mile. Tell us roughly how far it had come.

Wherever the vehicle came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to flush after the engine has been started. When it's noticed soon, long-term damage is very rare.

Clearing AdBlue in a diesel in Pilmuir: what it takes

A road beside 19 OTU Forres War Memorial, a driveway, a lay-by or a forecourt: anywhere the vehicle has stopped in Pilmuir, we come to it. The job depends on three answers, which we ask for before all else — what got in, the amount, and whether the motor has turned over.

Next, draining your tank right there takes out the contaminated diesel and the AdBlue in one go. What remains from AdBlue won't wash away by itself, so the fuel system gets a careful flush, which matters much more here than with petrol. Fresh diesel goes in once your filter is cleaned — or swapped, if it needs to be — and after that the vehicle is tested. Most of these jobs are a half-hour visit once our technicians arrive, provided the engine hasn't run. The pumps are explosion-proof, safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Lastly, the fuel system is primed with clean diesel. Then we fire it up and you head off, whether from a parking space by Forres or a driveway in Pilmuir. We check it runs smoothly on fresh diesel before we leave. We do it all wherever the vehicle has stopped, and it never has to go to a garage. Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both afterwards.

Pilmuir and Moray: AdBlue drains across the area

AdBlue jobs around Pilmuir are passed to vans that serve the places around it — Thornhill, Mundole as well as Red Craig — and much of Moray further out, throughout IV postcodes. Close to a border, or anywhere tricky to explain? Checking is better than assuming, so ring.

A mobile service suits Pilmuir, a residential suburb: there's no need to take your car to us, since our engineers empty it there, in a drive, a residential street, a car park or a filling station.

Pilmuir: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Since each jobs vary, a flat price wouldn't be fair. The cost shifts first with how long, if at all, the engine has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that was put in. After that it rests on where your car is and whether a van can reach it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight gap behind The Nicholson Building.

Which fluid was put in, how much, plus if the engine ran: each Pilmuir enquiry opens by asking exactly that, ahead of a quote, not afterwards. When those are answered, a range turns into one firm number.

Quoted by phone before the van sets out, it is paid for on the day — card or phone, no deposit. Check your policy while we're on the way: many include misfuelling cover.

Pilmuir: still alongside the car?

Then, the best thing to do with your car is to leave it. Ignition off, motor off, keys out. Say it was AdBlue, roughly what quantity, and whether the engine ran, on 0333 366 0103. After that Petrol in Diesel handles it, across Pilmuir or wherever within Moray.
