AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Plain Spot? Don't Start It

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, the ignition stays off and so does the motor. AdBlue is urea mixed in water. The trouble starts once it's sucked through your lines — it won't ignite, and it won't blend with diesel. If your motor hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally drained and thoroughly cleaned where the car sits in Plain Spot. Before anything, call us on 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in the diesel tank in Plain Spot: the first few minutes

Do these:

  • Remove your keys, and that stops someone switching the power on.
  • Near moving traffic? Then put your hazards on.
  • So you can give us which fluid it was and roughly how much, keep your receipt or the empty bottle.
  • Call us from where you are. A postcode starting NG16 5, or the name of the closest street, gets our van to you without a search.

Never:

  • Don't start your engine, even for a moment to move the vehicle.
  • Plenty of diesels run their pump the instant your ignition comes on, so leave the vehicle off.
  • AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding more diesel won't weaken it.
  • Leave the vehicle where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short stretch along Wilhallow Lane.
  • No draining it yourself, at all, at the roadside.

The attendants on duty at any Plain Spot filling station — the the nearest petrol station among them — will usually help pushing it clear if you ask. At your own driveway, don't move it at all.

AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Not the engine but your exhaust is where AdBlue belongs. From a dedicated reservoir it is fed directly to the exhaust, cleaning what your engine emits. Nothing in it is meant to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is built to handle it.

It doesn't combine. Once it's poured into a tank of diesel, AdBlue acts nothing like diesel. Heavier than diesel, it sinks and pools below it — the same place the pickup draws from. Simplest of all: one that had AdBlue in New Westwood last night and hasn't been started since. The AdBlue sits at the base of that tank, untouched — but it would be first through once your motor starts, before any diesel at all.

It does two kinds of harm from there. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps running on the parts it gets to for as long as it remains there. A motor left standing around Plain Spot with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank isn't. Water lubricates nothing. The high-pressure pump and every injector need diesel flowing through them, and so the water content damages them in its own right.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Plain Spot

AdBlue in a diesel: why it's often worse than petrol

Put petrol in a diesel at the Gulf and you have an issue of thin fuel. Blended into your diesel and sitting still, it's harmless for now; using your engine is the harm.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different matter: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all. Because it does not burn, running it through isn't an option. Crystals and corrosion stay after the next fill, and AdBlue splits again out of the diesel, and so watering it can't help. That is why the flush matters more, and turning the key "to see" does more harm here than nearly any other slip — in Westwood or the centre of Plain Spot equally.

The good news is the same as with petrol. If the motor hasn't run, the AdBlue is still inside the tank, and your tank is the easiest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever around Nottinghamshire the vehicle is sitting.

Plain Spot: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

In dim light, two caps side by side — the AdBlue one and the diesel cap, now and then under a single flap — can appear the same. No one means it; many layouts invite it. Mostly it's never the filling station: a driver buys a bottle heading home and pours it in at home.

It tends to take place in a couple of familiar ways. Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside Underwood Church of England Primary School the refill is hurried. In the evening, a bottle is tipped in on a driveway close to Main Road. Another pattern: darkness, a pub car park by Durham Ox, and someone opening that flap the first time.

It crops up the most in a hire car, a new car, a company car, or the spare motor of a home with one of each fuel types — the cars people use least. Same mistake, an identical first response — leave it switched off — anywhere you happen to be around Plain Spot or the rest of Nottinghamshire.

Plain Spot: started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Then the tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. Given any running, it goes on to the injection pump and each injector, having passed through your filter and pipework.

Watch for rough running, smoke, falling power, lights on the dash, or a cut-out — returning from Brinsley Recreation Ground, perhaps, or midway across Plain Spot. When you safely can, pull over and turn everything off — with no restarting to see. Every start pulls more of that through.

Leave the M1, under 3 miles from Plain Spot, at the next junction and park safely, not driving on.

Mileage counts: every mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in, so heading for Nottingham, under 10 miles away, makes a much bigger job than crossing Plain Spot to the car park by Brinsley Village Sign. Let us know roughly how far it had come.

There is more to rinse out once your engine has been started, and our engineers do all of it where your car has stopped. If it is noticed early, permanent damage is very unusual.

Emptying AdBlue in a diesel around Plain Spot: what it takes

Our technicians come to the vehicle, wherever it has stopped in Plain Spot: a side street near St Michael and All Angels, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. Before anything else we ask what was put in, roughly how much, and if your engine has run, since those answers settle the work.

Then the tank is emptied where your car waits, so the polluted fuel and the AdBlue come out together. A full flush counts far more after AdBlue than with petrol, because what remains won't clear out on its own. Next, your filter: flushed, or changed when it has to be. Then clean diesel, and then a test of your car. If your motor has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once our engineers are there. Our equipment is explosion-proof, and so a live filling station is no problem, and it's quiet enough for a residential street after dark.

The final step is to bleed your system on clean diesel. You drive off as soon as we have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether the vehicle is on a drive around Plain Spot or in a space outside Langley Mill. Before leaving, we confirm it's running correctly with new diesel in. No workshop is required at any point, with the whole job done on the spot. Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come at the end.

AdBlue drains in Plain Spot and across Nottinghamshire

AdBlue jobs in Plain Spot are passed to vans that cover the towns near it — Brinsley, New Brinsley as well as Underwood — and most of Nottinghamshire further out, throughout NG postcodes. Ring and check instead of guessing when you are by a county line, or anywhere awkward to explain.

No towing is needed. In Plain Spot, a residential suburb, a van that comes to you fits: your vehicle is drained on the spot, whether on a drive, a residential street, a car park or a filling station.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Plain Spot?

There is no honest single quote, since the jobs are not the same. The cost changes first with how long, if at all, the motor has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that got in. After that it depends on where your car is and whether a van can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight space behind Brinsley Parish Hall.

With that in mind, each call from Plain Spot opens with the same trio — what got in, how much, if the engine ran — ahead of any quote. With them, the range shrinks to a single firm figure.

You get that price by phone, before anybody sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront. Misfuelling cover comes with many insurance policies, so it pays to look at yours before the van gets there.
