AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Pleckgate? Don't Start It

With AdBlue in the diesel tank, the ignition remains off and so does the engine. Chemically, AdBlue is just urea in water. It does not burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the damage it does begins when the system pulls it in. Caught before the engine has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Pleckgate. Nothing comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank around Pleckgate

To do:

  • Pocket your keys, which prevents anyone turning the power on.
  • Put the hazard lights on if you're at all near moving traffic.
  • Keep your receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what went in and roughly how much.
  • Give us a postcode starting BB1 8, or whatever street lies nearest, and the van finds you straight — so ring wherever you are.

Not to do:

  • No starting the engine — not briefly, not to shift your vehicle.
  • Do not switch the ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • Do not top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue does not dilute in diesel; it separates out.
  • Don't drive it anywhere, not even a short distance along Ramsgreave Avenue.
  • Draining that tank on your own beside the road is not worth trying.

On a forecourt around Pleckgate, whether it is the BP or another one, ask the attendants to help you roll the car away from the petrol pump. If you're on your own drive, leave the car exactly where it stands.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

Not the motor but the exhaust is where AdBlue is meant to go. From a separate reservoir it is fed straight to the exhaust, cleaning what the motor lets out. Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is designed to handle it.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, once tipped in, will not. The behaviour is nothing like fuel's. The intake takes fuel from the lowest part of that tank, and that is precisely where AdBlue ends up: as it is heavier than diesel, it sinks. The first thing the system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a vehicle that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Four Lane Ends last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the simple case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of that tank, and nothing has drawn it in.

Once it's pulled in, the damage takes two forms. What is left when the water evaporates is urea, which forms crystals: they lodge in narrow channels and block filters. Worse, it eats at some metals in the fuel system, and carries on until it's flushed out. Where the AdBlue is in the lines, waiting overnight around Pleckgate leaves it worse. Inside your tank only, waiting costs nothing. Diesel protects the high-pressure pump and each injector as it flows; water offers no lubrication, which is a second kind of harm.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is commonly worse

Petrol put into a diesel on Prestonway Service Station's forecourt leaves your fuel watery — that is the whole problem. Damage just comes from running on it. Blended into the diesel and left in the tank, it does nothing.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely unsuitable liquid. It can't just be run through, since it doesn't burn. Nor can it be thinned, since it separates again — and the following fill will not rinse away crystals or corrosion. So the flush matters more here, and trying the engine "to see", in the heart of Pleckgate or out in Ramsgreave, does more harm than nearly any other mistake.

The good news is the same as with petrol. Emptying a tank is the easiest job on any fuel system, and without running, the AdBlue stays in it — anywhere across Lancashire your vehicle sits.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Pleckgate: how it ends up there

After dark, two caps together — the AdBlue one and the diesel one, now and then behind one flap — can look the same. No one intends it; plenty of layouts invite it. A container bought while driving home and tipped in outside the house, rather than at the forecourt, is the usual story.

The ways it happens are few and familiar. The top-up is hurried outside St Gabriel's Church of England Primary School, because your dash lit up with a warning as the children were taken off. Close to Bevan Street, someone pours a bottle in at home in the evening. Else, after dark by Royal Oak, your vehicle is topped up by a driver opening that flap for the first time.

It crops up most in a rental, a new car, a company vehicle, or the spare vehicle of a family with both fuels — the vehicles drivers use least. Wherever across Lancashire, Pleckgate as well, the mistake doesn't change, and neither does the first response: keep it off.

Already started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Pleckgate?

Then the AdBlue has left your tank. Given any running time, it goes on to the injection pump and each injector, after passing via the filter and lines.

You may notice the engine running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, possibly on the way back from Blackburn Rugby Club or halfway across Pleckgate. No restarting to check: stop when it is safe, then switch it off. Each start pulls more of it through.

On the M65, under 3 miles from Pleckgate, the next junction is where to exit, and anywhere safe is where to park — not driving on.

A quick hop across Pleckgate to the car park by Lammack Methodist is one matter; driving towards Preston, under 10 miles away, is another, since each mile pushes the AdBlue further in. So mileage counts. About how far it had come is worth telling us.

Wherever the car came to a stop is where all of it gets done, even with more to flush once the engine has been run. Noticed soon, it very rarely leaves long-term damage.

Clearing AdBlue in a diesel in Pleckgate: what it takes

The vehicle stays where it is, whether that's a road beside QEGS Sports Hall, a driveway, a lay-by or a filling station around Pleckgate, and the van comes to it. The job depends on three replies, and our engineers get before all else — which fluid was put in, the quantity, and whether the engine has turned over.

Next, draining your tank on the spot removes the contaminated diesel and the AdBlue together. A careful flush matters far more after AdBlue than with petrol, because residue won't wash out by itself. Testing the car comes at the end, once fresh diesel is added and the fuel filter is flushed or, if needed, replaced. Not run? In that case count on about half an hour once we are there for most jobs. Quiet enough for use outside a house at night, and safe on a working forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

Clean diesel goes in to prime the system, and that is the final step. You set off as soon as our engineers have started the engine, and it makes no difference whether your car is on a driveway around Pleckgate or in a space by Ramsgreave & Wilpshire. It's checked on new diesel to be sure it runs correctly before we head off. Since the job is done in its entirety where the car is, a garage never comes into it. Your insurer will want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — each handed over afterwards.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Pleckgate: the cost of fixing it

Every job differs, and so no fixed price would be honest. The price moves first with how long, if at all, the motor has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that went in. After that it turns on where the car is and whether a van can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight gap behind Revidge Fold.

That's why each call from Pleckgate starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what was put in, how much, and whether it's run. Those answers turn a range into a straight price.

Before anyone heads out, you hear our price by phone. And payment is on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront. While our engineer is travelling, check your policy: many include misfuelling.
