Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Plumpton Head

If AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank, leave your engine off and keep your ignition off. In plain terms, AdBlue is simply urea in water. The harm starts once it's sucked through your pump — it won't ignite, and it will not blend with diesel. If your engine hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally emptied and carefully flushed where the vehicle stands in Plumpton Head. Before you do anything else, phone 0333 366 0103.

What to do right now, Plumpton Head: AdBlue in the diesel tank

Do:

  • Pocket the keys, and that stops anyone turning the electrics on.
  • Close to moving traffic? Then put your hazards on.
  • So you can give us which liquid it was and about how much, save your receipt or the empty bottle.
  • Tell us a postcode starting CA11 9, or whatever street lies closest, and our van finds you straight — so ring wherever you are.

Things not to do:

  • Not even briefly, and not to shift your vehicle: your motor stays off.
  • Don't switch the ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • Pouring in extra diesel doesn't work: AdBlue settles out rather than thinning.
  • Any driving at all is to be avoided, even a short stretch up A6.
  • Emptying that tank yourself by the road isn't one to try.

On a forecourt around Plumpton Head, whether it is the Esso or another one, ask the staff to help you push the vehicle clear of the petrol pump. Stopped on your own driveway? Then it remains just where it is.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not your motor. From a dedicated reservoir it goes directly to your exhaust, cleaning what the motor emits. Neither side suits the other: urea does not belong in a pump, and an injection pump can't deal with urea.

Tipped in with your diesel, it stays separate instead of mixing — quite unlike fuel. It's heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of your tank, which is where the pickup sucks fuel from. Simplest of all: one that got AdBlue in Catterlen overnight and hasn't turned since. The AdBlue sits at the base of the tank, undrawn — though it would be first through if the engine starts, ahead of any diesel at all.

After it's pulled in, the harm takes two forms. Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it strands urea that crystallises in filter elements and tiny passages; meanwhile, because it attacks some metals, every part it touches keeps suffering for as long as it stays inside. Pipes holding AdBlue mean damage overnight for a car parked in Plumpton Head. Just inside that tank, it stays stable. The water in it causes damage of its own: your high-pressure pump and your injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

Why AdBlue in a diesel is commonly more serious than petrol

Top up a diesel with petrol by mistake at the BP, and this issue is thinned fuel. No damage is done while it stays unused, blended into the diesel — only once the motor runs on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid as such is plainly the wrong one. It doesn't burn, so it can't simply be run through. Nor can it be thinned, since it splits back out — and the next fill will not clear away deposits or corrosion. So the flush matters more with AdBlue, and trying your engine "to see", in the centre of Plumpton Head or out in Newton Reigny, does more harm than almost any other slip.

The same good news holds as with petrol. Wherever in Cumbria your vehicle has come to rest, an unrun motor leaves the AdBlue yet inside the tank: the easiest bit of any fuel system to empty.

Plumpton Head: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Plenty of cars place the AdBlue filler beside the diesel one, now and then behind a single flap, and in dim light the two can appear identical. No one intends it. It mostly occurs outside the house, from a container bought en route home, not at the forecourt.

A few familiar ways cover most cases. Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside Plumpton School the top-up is hurried. Close to Bowscar Road, someone pours a container in on the drive in the evening. Otherwise, after dark by Stoneybeck Inn, your car is topped up by someone using that flap the first time.

It takes place most in the cars motorists know least: a hire car, a new motor, a company car, or the second vehicle of a household with one diesel and one petrol. Same slip, an identical first step — keep it switched off — wherever you are in Plumpton Head or the remainder of Cumbria.

Already started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank in Plumpton Head?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer inside your tank. It has been sucked through the fuel filter and the fuel lines, and if the engine ran for any time, it has reached the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors.

Rough running, smoke, dropping power, dashboard warnings or cutting out: each might show up, perhaps midway across Plumpton Head or coming back from Rashmire Wood. No starting it again to test: stop when it is safe, then switch everything off. With each start, more of that is pulled through.

If you were on the M6, under a mile from Plumpton Head, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere sensible rather than pressing on.

Every mile carries the AdBlue further into your system. That's why crossing Plumpton Head to park near Stone Circle Remnants and a drive of under 15 miles towards Carlisle are very distinct jobs. Let us know about how far it had come.

Once your engine has run, the flush covers more, and all of it is done where the vehicle has come to a stop. Lasting damage is very unusual if it's spotted soon.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around Plumpton Head?

We come to your car, wherever it has stopped in Plumpton Head: a side street near St Johns Church, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. What got in, roughly how much, plus if your engine has been run: our technicians ask first, because those decide the work.

Then your tank is cleared where your car sits, and so the contaminated fuel and the AdBlue come out together. With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, the flush counts: the whole system is flushed right through since what remains won't flush out unaided. After that, your filter: flushed, or replaced when it has to be. Then fresh diesel, and then a test of your vehicle. Most of these jobs are a half-hour job once we arrive, if the engine hasn't run. Low-noise enough for use outside a house at night, and safe on a busy forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

Last, your system is bled with clean diesel. Then our technicians fire it up and you drive off, whether from a parking bay by Penrith or a driveway in Plumpton Head. The check before we go is that it runs smoothly on clean diesel. Since the job is done in full where the car is, a workshop never comes into it. You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report afterwards, which is what insurers want.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Plumpton Head

No single price would be fair, because each job differs. What moves the price is, first of all, whether the engine has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue went in; and then where your car is and whether a van can get to it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight space behind Andy Goldsworthy Arch Fold.

With that reason, every enquiry from Plumpton Head begins with the identical trio — what was put in, how much, whether the engine ran — ahead of any quote. Those replies shrink the range right down to one number.

You get that quote by phone, before anybody heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
