AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Plympton? Don't Start It

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then leave your motor off — and your ignition as well. Urea mixed in water is what AdBlue is. The harm begins once it is sucked through your pump — it won't ignite, and it won't combine with diesel. If your motor has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually emptied and thoroughly cleaned where the car stands in Plympton. Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

Plympton, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do at once

Do these:

  • Keys out — that way nobody can switch anything on.
  • Near moving traffic? Then put the hazard lights on.
  • The empty bottle or the till receipt tells us the fluid and the amount, and so do not throw it out.
  • Tell us a postcode starting PL7 2, or whichever street is closest, and the van finds you straight — so call wherever you stand.

Don't:

  • No starting the motor — not for a second, not to shift the car.
  • Your ignition remains off: on many diesels, switching it on is enough to start the pump.
  • Do not top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue does not mix in diesel; it separates out.
  • Even a short way along Ridgeway is too far to drive the vehicle.
  • Draining your tank yourself beside the road isn't one to try.

Ask the people behind the counter to help you roll the car away from the pumps if you're at a forecourt in Plympton, whether it's the Esso or elsewhere. On the drive, the car stays exactly as it is.

AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Meant for your exhaust, AdBlue has no business in your engine. Its own reservoir holds it, and from there it's fed into your exhaust, and there it cleans the gas. Nothing in a fuel pump is designed for this liquid — and none of that was intended to travel that way.

Poured in with your diesel, it stays apart instead of blending — entirely different from fuel. The intake sucks fuel from the lowest part of your tank, and that's just where AdBlue settles: as it is heavier than diesel, it sinks. Once your pump runs, the AdBlue is first to go through. Until then it sits beneath the diesel, which is why a vehicle filled in Underwood yesterday and not switched on stays the simple case, as long as nobody turns the key.

Two kinds of damage follow from there. Crystals and corrosion. As the water evaporates, it strands urea that hardens in filters and tiny passages; and, since it eats at some metals, each part it touches suffers for as long as it remains in there. A motor left standing in Plympton with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank isn't. The water in it causes harm of its own: the high-pressure pump and your injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Plympton

Why is AdBlue in a diesel often the bigger problem?

Top up a diesel with petrol in error at the Texaco, and the issue is thinned fuel. It mixes with the diesel, and while it's in that tank it does no damage; the harm comes from running the engine on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid as such is plainly the wrong one. It doesn't burn, and so it cannot just be run through. Crystals and corrosion stay through the following tankful, and AdBlue splits again out of your diesel, so thinning it can't help. Hence the flush counts so much, and turning the key "to see" costs more here than almost any other mistake — in Chaddlewood or the heart of Plympton alike.

With AdBlue, the good news is no different from petrol. Emptying a tank is the easiest job on any fuel system, and with no running, the AdBlue stays in there — anywhere across Devon the vehicle sits.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Plympton

Plenty of vehicles place the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel one, now and then under a single flap, and in dim light the two can look identical. Nobody means it. A container picked up when heading home and poured in outside the house, rather than at the forecourt, is the usual story.

The ways it happens are few and familiar. Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside Old Priory Junior Academy the refill is hurried. After work, a container goes in on a driveway near Moorland Road. Else, after dark outside The Stannary Court, the vehicle is refilled by someone using that flap the first time.

It crops up the most in a hire car, a brand-new car, a company motor, or the other vehicle in a family with one of each fuel types — the vehicles drivers use the least. Wherever around Devon, Plympton as well, the slip doesn't change, and nor does the first response: keep it off.

Plympton: started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Then the AdBlue has left your tank. Your filter and lines have had it sucked along, and any running time carries it on to the injection pump and each injector.

Rough running, smoke from the exhaust, lost power, dashboard warnings or stalling: any might appear, maybe midway across Plympton or returning from Hardwick Wood. When safe, stop and switch everything off — without restarting to test. Each start pulls more of that through.

Leave the M5, under 50 miles from Plympton, by the next junction and stop safely, rather than carrying on.

Hopping across Plympton to the car park by Rees Centre Wellbeing Hub is one thing; heading for Plymouth, under 5 miles away, is something else, since each mile pushes the AdBlue further in. So distance matters. About how far it had come is worth telling us.

Once the engine has been run, the flush takes in more, and all of it is done where your car has ended up. When it's caught soon, long-term damage is very unusual.

What draining AdBlue from a diesel involves around Plympton

A street beside Living Well Church, a driveway, a layby or a filling station: anywhere the car has come to rest in Plympton, our engineers travel to it. Which fluid got in, about how much, plus whether your engine has turned over: our engineers ask before all else, because those decide the job.

On the spot, the tank is then drained, and both the polluted diesel and the urea leave as one. What remains from AdBlue won't wash away by itself, so the fuel system gets a careful flush, which counts much more here than for petrol. A test of the vehicle comes last, after fresh diesel is added and the filter is cleaned or, if needed, replaced. Roughly half an hour once we arrive is typical for most jobs when your engine has not run. Low-noise enough for use outside a house at night, and fine on a busy forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

Lastly, the system is primed with fresh diesel. You set off as soon as our engineers have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether your car is on a driveway in Plympton or in a bay at Plymouth. Our engineers check it runs properly on clean diesel before leaving. Our technicians do it all wherever the car has stopped, and it never has to go to a garage. Afterwards, there is the paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice plus a report from the engineer.

Plympton: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Since the callouts differ, a flat figure would not be fair. The cost shifts first with how long, if at all, your engine has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that got in. After that it rests on where your car is and whether a technician can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight gap behind Plympton Library.

With that reason, every enquiry from Plympton opens by asking the identical trio — what was put in, how much, if it ran — ahead of any quote. The replies turn a range into a straight price.

Our quote is given on the call, before a van leaves; settling up happens on the day, by card or by phone, and nothing upfront. Misfuelling cover is part of plenty of insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van gets there.
