Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Pockthorpe: Why It Happens
If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the motor and your ignition off then ring 0333 366 0103. In Pockthorpe, finding it before your motor turns usually means draining and a full flush where it stands. If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it does not.
Why does AdBlue in a diesel motor need its own filler?
Diesel feeds your motor — yet many newer diesels driven around Pockthorpe and Twyford hold a second fluid too. Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust stream to clean it.
Separate tanks, different fillers. Under one flap, side by side: that's the arrangement on many cars. On others, AdBlue's filler is beneath the bonnet or in the boot instead. Diesel gets filled at each filling station visit, week in, week out. Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes normally tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less frequently. That gap is where the mistake lives.
Pockthorpe: how AdBlue in the diesel tank takes place
Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things coincide.
First, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a message from your car, and letting it run out leads to limp mode — hence a rushed top-up, perhaps before work off Gunn Street, perhaps at The Queen's Head on the way home that evening.
The old car's cap is where the hand goes — yet a hire car, a new vehicle or a company car keeps the fillers elsewhere. That's the second factor: a strange car.
Third, the spout goes in: a diesel filler or AdBlue one, it slides in as readily, and after the pour begins, nothing halts it. The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Pockthorpe or out in Foulsham.
Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler
Check these first, on a forecourt around Pockthorpe or a drive over in Themelthorpe. A few seconds, no more.
- Where it sits misleads; the cap doesn't. AdBlue caps are often blue or bear the word "AdBlue" — diesel caps normally don't.
- The size. On many vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.
- Lift the filler flap and look for a label — plenty of motors mark which belongs in each inlet just there.
- Cannot find it next to the diesel inlet? In that case check below the bonnet or inside the boot — the owner's manual will say which.
- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside the nearest station.
Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up
Wherever in Norfolk the light comes on, this is a routine for the day.
- Not in a rush on the side of Low Common Close, not on a slope, not with the motor running: park then switch off first.
- Locate the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" out loud as unscrewing it. It sounds silly. It works.
- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.
- Stop when that tank is topped up or the bottle runs dry; before that, pour gently using its built-in spout.
- Only then, start your car: close the cap, check again, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.
Discover at the second or third step that the bottle went in the wrong filler? That's where you stop. Step five stays out.
Pockthorpe: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?
Then the order of things is short. Do not start the motor. On many diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so don't switch it on. Topping up with diesel will not weaken it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the bottom of the tank, right where the fuel is taken from.
The attendants at the nearest petrol station, another forecourt nearby or any forecourt will usually help pushing the vehicle clear when asked. If you are on your own driveway around Pockthorpe, leave the vehicle where it stands.
Already started? Stop once it's safe, then switch off. Leave the M11 — over 50 miles out of Pockthorpe — at the first junction. About how far did it go? Crossing Pockthorpe is less work than a run of under 25 miles towards Norwich, and so say.
Pockthorpe: what takes place when our technicians get there
Our engineers come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside Foulsham Primary School Academy, near New Frost Hall or on your own driveway. The replies decide the work and the quote, so our technicians ask what got in, about how much, and whether it's run. On the call itself, you are told our quote — ahead of anything else.
Then your tank is emptied and the system rinsed thoroughly. More than with petrol, it counts with AdBlue: the crystals form, some metals corrode, and nothing washes out unaided, however long it sits. A test comes at the end: before that, fresh diesel is added, and the filter is flushed or changed as needed. Before leaving, our technicians fire it up and make sure that it's running correctly.
If the engine has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark. Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you are given the documents an insurer wants: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice. Before we get there, have a look at your policy; plenty include cover for misfuelling.

Pockthorpe and Norfolk: AdBlue drains across the area
Over NR postcodes, our teams covering Pockthorpe — a residential suburb — work the nearby spots too, Bintree and Bexfield among them. Fastest of all: give a NR20 5 postcode to the van.
The car remains where it is. A driveway, a lay-by on the way to Foulsham Park, a side street close to Baptist Church: our technicians drain the vehicle where it is. Awkward to pin down, like the back of Foulsham War Memorial? By a border? Asking is better than assuming, and so ring.
