Podimore: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

With AdBlue in the diesel tank, the ignition remains off and so does your engine. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water. The harm starts once it's pulled through the lines — it will not ignite, and it won't combine with diesel. If your motor has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally drained and thoroughly purged where your car sits around Podimore. No step comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in the diesel tank in Podimore: the first few minutes

Things to do:

  • Pocket your keys, and that prevents someone turning the power on.
  • Near moving traffic? Then put your hazards on.
  • Which fluid, and roughly how much quantity? Save the bottle or the receipt, and we can see.
  • Call us from where you are. A postcode starting BA22 8, or the name of the nearest street, gets the van to you without a search.

Not to do:

  • Do not start the engine, even for a moment to shift your car.
  • The ignition stays off: on many diesels, switching it on is enough to run your fuel pump.
  • Adding more diesel doesn't help: AdBlue separates out instead of thinning.
  • Keep it where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short way down Willow Tree Close.
  • Do not try to drain the vehicle yourself by the roadside.

Moving the vehicle away from the island is a job for staff to help with, wherever Podimore forecourt you are on, the Esso or any other. If you are on your own drive, leave it just where it sits.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

The engine is not what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to clean it. Not one side suits the other: urea does not belong in a pump, and a pump can't deal with urea.

It does not blend. After it is poured into a tank of diesel, AdBlue acts not at all like diesel. It's heavier than diesel, so it sinks and collects at the bottom of your tank, which is where the pickup draws fuel from. A car topped up on a drive in Downhead yesterday evening and not started since is the straightforward one. Nothing has sucked the AdBlue up so far — though when your motor runs, that is what is pulled first, directly from the bottom of that tank.

Once it's sucked in, the damage comes in two forms. Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it leaves urea that hardens in filter elements and tiny channels; and, because it eats at certain metals, every part it reaches keeps suffering for as long as it stays in there. If the AdBlue has reached the pipework, waiting till morning around Podimore makes things worse. In that tank alone, time does nothing. Water lubricates nothing. The injection pump and every injector depend on diesel running through them, so the water part damages them by itself.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is frequently worse

Petrol pumped into a diesel on Texaco's forecourt makes the fuel watery — that's the main problem. Damage only comes from driving on it. Mixed into your diesel and sitting inside your tank, it causes nothing.

AdBlue in a diesel is another matter: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all. Not burning, it cannot just be run through. Nor can it be watered down, since it splits again — and the following tankful will not clear away crystals or corrosion. So the flush matters for more here, and trying your engine "to see", in the centre of Podimore or out in Cary Fitzpaine, does more harm than almost any other mistake.

With AdBlue, the good news is no distinct from petrol. Clearing a tank is the simplest part on any fuel system, and without running, the AdBlue stays in it — anywhere across Somerset your car has stopped.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Podimore: how it ends up there

Plenty of motors put the AdBlue cap beside the diesel one, now and then behind one flap, and after dark the two can appear the same. No one intends it. Mostly it occurs with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the pump.

It tends to take place in a few familiar ways. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up happens in a hurry outside Ilchester Community School. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Podimore Road. Another pattern: dim light, the car park outside The Podymore Inn, and a driver using that flap the first time.

The least known cars get it most — rentals, brand-new ones, company ones, and the spare motor in a family with both fuels. Anywhere around Somerset, Podimore included, the slip doesn't change, and nor does the first response: keep it off.

Podimore: started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank?

The AdBlue has left that tank, then. It has been pulled through your filter and the fuel lines, and if the motor ran for any time, it has got to the high-pressure fuel pump and your injectors.

You may see your engine running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, perhaps on the way back from Farm Lane Plantation or halfway across Podimore. Once you safely can, pull over and turn it off — without restarting to see. With each start, more of it is pulled through.

If you were on the M5, under 25 miles from Podimore, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere safe rather than pressing on.

Each mile pushes the AdBlue deeper into your system. That is why a hop across Podimore to park beside St Peter and a drive of under 15 miles for Wells are very separate jobs. Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

Once the engine has been run, the flush includes more, and all of it is done where the vehicle has stopped. Long-term damage is very unusual if it's caught soon.

What draining AdBlue from a diesel involves in Podimore

Our technicians come to the vehicle, wherever it has stopped in Podimore: a side street near Westland Gazelle HT2, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. The job depends on three answers, and our engineers get before all else — which fluid went in, the amount, and whether the engine has turned over.

Right there, the tank is then emptied, and both the polluted diesel and the urea leave as one. A careful flush matters much more with AdBlue than after petrol, since residue will not clear away on its own. Testing your car comes last, after fresh diesel is added and your filter is cleaned or, if necessary, replaced. If the motor has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once our engineers are there. Low-noise enough for use outside a house at night, and safe on a working forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

Clean diesel goes in to prime the fuel system, and that is the final step. After that our technicians start it and you head off, whether from a parking bay by Yeovil Pen Mill or a drive around Podimore. The check before our technicians go is that it runs correctly on clean diesel. Because the job is done in its entirety where your car is, a workshop never comes into it. You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report after that, which is what insurers ask for.

A van that comes to you suits Podimore, a rural village: you have no need to take the car to us, because our engineers drain it on the spot, on a drive, a side street, a parking area or a forecourt.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Podimore

No single price would be fair, since each job differs. Whether the motor has been running, and for how long, comes first in what shifts the cost. How much AdBlue was put in comes next, and then the location of the car, since an open drive is easier for a van to reach safely than a tight spot behind Cobham Hall.

What went in, how much, plus if the engine ran: every Podimore enquiry begins with precisely that, before a quote, not afterwards. With them, the range shrinks to a single firm figure.

Before anyone heads out, you hear our price on the phone. And payment is on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing in advance. Check your insurance whilst we are on the way: plenty include misfuelling cover.

Podimore: still beside the car?
