AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Pogmoor: How It Happens and How to Prevent It

Stop reading a minute if the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, and phone 0333 366 0103. A drain plus a full flush, carried out just where your vehicle sits around Pogmoor, is usually all it needs if found before the motor runs. If you're reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it does not.

AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

Many modern diesels on the roads around Pogmoor and Keresforth Hill carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your motor. AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Every tank comes with one filler of its own. Other vehicles keep the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; a lot of others have both side by side behind one flap. Topping up your diesel side at the petrol pump goes on constantly. Rarely filled, AdBlue usually comes out of a bottle, tipped by a driver who must stop and think what cap to use. The mistake grows in the gap between them.

How does AdBlue in the diesel tank take place around Pogmoor?

It is hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the car goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Pogmoor Road before work, or in the car park at Tom Treddlehoyle on the way home.

The old car's filler is where your hand reaches — but a rental car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers elsewhere. That's a second thing: a new car.

A spouted bottle meets no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. So the pour, after started, carries on. It takes a few seconds, whether in Gawber or right in the heart of Pogmoor.

The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Whether a Pogmoor forecourt or a driveway out in Higham Common, spend a few seconds over these before anything goes in.

  • Where it sits can mislead; the cap doesn't. AdBlue caps are often blue or bear the word "AdBlue" — diesel caps normally do not.
  • The size. On plenty of cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.
  • The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Many cars say there which fuel goes where.
  • The handbook shows which it is if the filler is not next to the diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.
  • Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Dodworth.

Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

The day the light goes on, anywhere in South Yorkshire, follow this routine.

  • Switch off once parked — flat ground, motor off, and not rushed by Oakfield Walk on the verge.
  • Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it does the trick.
  • The two behind one flap? So confirm the cap on the diesel filler stays shut ahead of raising the bottle.
  • Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.
  • Close the cap, and check once more — making sure the diesel cap stayed closed throughout. After that, start the car.

Discover at the second or third step that AdBlue went into the diesel tank? That is where you stop. Stage five is off limits.

AdBlue in the diesel tank already, in Pogmoor?

What follows is a short order of things, beginning with no starting the motor. Keep the ignition off too, because on plenty of diesels it by itself starts your fuel pump. Diluting it with extra diesel fails, since AdBlue settles to the bottom instead of blending — and that's where your fuel is drawn from.

On a forecourt — Jet, Gulf or any other — the attendants will normally help push the vehicle away, if you ask. On your own drive in Pogmoor? So the car stays where it is.

If your engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off. Pogmoor sits under a mile from the M1; on it, take the first exit. About how far did it go? Hopping across Pogmoor is less a job than a run of under 10 miles to Wakefield, so say.

What takes place when our engineers arrive in Pogmoor

Our van comes to your car wherever it stopped — your own driveway, beside Barnsley Muslim Community Centre, or by Gawber Primary School. Those replies settle this work and the price, so we ask what got in, roughly how much, and if it's run. No one heads out until you have had the quote by phone.

The system is then rinsed thoroughly, after that tank is emptied. Not like petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and none of it washes out unaided. That is why it counts more. Testing comes last: before that, clean diesel is added, and your filter is cleaned or replaced if necessary. Next our engineers start it and make sure it runs correctly before we go.

Using pumps safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs where your motor hasn't run take roughly half an hour after our technicians arrive. Nothing upfront; you settle up on the day. At the end, a VAT invoice and the report from the engineer are handed to you for the insurer. Before we get there, have a look at your insurance documents; plenty carry cover for misfuelling.
