If you're reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't.

Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car

Not one fluid but two: that is how many newer diesels near Pont Cysyllte and Cefn-bychan carry, with diesel feeding your engine. The exhaust, not your motor, is where AdBlue goes: sprayed into the fumes to clean them, from its own tank.

There is a filler on each tank. Plenty of motors share a single flap for both, whereas some put the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet. Diesel goes in on each filling station visit, week in, week out. The AdBlue side is topped up far less frequently, usually from a bottle, and usually by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes. That gap is where the error lives.

How AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs around Pont Cysyllte

Seldom is it carelessness: usually three things coincide.

Haste comes from the warning. The vehicle warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up happens in a rush, before work on a driveway off Queen Street, or on the way home in the car park outside Queen's Hotel.

New-to-you motors are second, too. Rentals, new motors and company motors place their fillers in new places, and the hand goes for the cap used on the old one.

A spouted bottle meets no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, once started, keeps on. It takes a few seconds, be it out in Aber-nant or right in the heart of Pont Cysyllte.

How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Before you pour anything, whether on a drive in Cefn-mawr or a forecourt around Pont Cysyllte, check these. They take a few seconds.

  • Colour and lettering: an AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually does not. Trust the cap, not its position.
  • Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on many cars, the AdBlue one.
  • The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Plenty of cars say there which fuel goes where.
  • In the boot or under the bonnet: that is where your filler sits if it is not by the diesel cap, and the handbook says which.
  • Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park outside Ruabon? Ask whoever drove the vehicle last before leaving, rather than once the light comes on.

How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

Anywhere in Wrexham the light comes on, this is a routine for the day.

  • Stop on level, motor off, with time in hand — not hurried on the side of Mill Lane.
  • Find the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and speak the name "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew it. It seems silly. It works.
  • If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the vehicle on.
  • Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.
  • Before you start the vehicle, close the cap and look a second time that the diesel cap never came off.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there. Never carry on to stage five.

AdBlue in the diesel tank already, in Pont Cysyllte?

Short order, then. Top of that: the motor stays off. The fuel pump runs on many diesels as soon as the ignition is switched on — and so keep it off. Topping up with diesel won't dilute it: instead, AdBlue drops to the base of your tank, right where the fuel is taken from.

At a forecourt — Shell, Esso or any other — the staff will usually help push the vehicle clear, when you ask. If you're on your own drive around Pont Cysyllte, leave the car where it is.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if your motor has already run. The next junction means where to come off when you are on the M53, under 25 miles from Pont Cysyllte. Our arrival around Pont Cysyllte, and what occurs next

By Weston Rhyn Primary School, close to Cefn Bank or on your own driveway: wherever your car has stopped, we come to it. The answers decide this work and our price, so our engineers ask what was put in, roughly how much, and if it has run. The price is given on the call, ahead of any van leaving.

Next: a drain, then a thorough flush of the entire system. Much more than with petrol, it matters here: crystals build up, some metals corrode, and none of that washes away on its own, however long it is left. Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested. After that we start the engine and confirm it runs properly before we leave.

Unstarted cars usually mean a half-hour job after arrival. The equipment is fine on a busy forecourt, and hushed enough for a residential street late at night. Payment is on the day, not upfront, and you are given the documents your insurer wants: an engineer report and a VAT invoice. Misfuelling cover is part of plenty of insurance policies — so use the wait to look at yours.
