Preston: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off
Engine off, ignition off: that's how you begin if AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank. AdBlue is urea mixed in water. Not like fuel, it neither burns nor mixes, and no harm starts until your engine sucks it round. If your engine hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally emptied and thoroughly cleaned where the car sits around Preston. Before anything, call us on 0333 366 0103.
Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank around Preston
Do these:
- Keys out — that way no one can power anything on.
- Put the hazard lights on if you are anywhere close to moving traffic.
- Which fluid, and roughly how much quantity? Hang on to the bottle or your receipt, and our engineers can know.
- Call us from where you are. A postcode starting BN1 5, or the name of the closest street, gets our van to you without a search.
Not to do:
- Do not start your motor, even for a moment to move the vehicle.
- Don't switch the ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
- Pouring in more diesel does not help: AdBlue settles out instead of thinning.
- Do not drive it anywhere, not even a short stretch up Highcroft Villas.
- By the road, do not try emptying it yourself.
Rolling the car off the pumps is a job for attendants to help with, whichever Preston forecourt you are on, the Esso included. At home, the vehicle remains just as it is.
AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does
Made for your exhaust, AdBlue has no place in the motor. Kept in a dedicated tank, it's injected into the exhaust stream to treat the gases. Not one side fits the other: urea does not belong in an injection pump, and a pump can't take urea.
It doesn't combine. After it's tipped into a tank of diesel, AdBlue behaves not at all like fuel. Heavier than diesel, it drops and pools below it — the same spot the pickup draws from. The first thing the fuel system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a vehicle that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Brighton and Hove last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the easy case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of your tank, and nothing has pulled it in.
It does two kinds of harm from there. It attacks some metals used in fuel systems, working on any part it touches until it is removed from your system. And when the water evaporates, the urea turns into crystals that clog filters and lodge in tiny channels. Overnight, a car sitting in Preston with AdBlue through its pipework gets worse; if it is just inside that tank, it doesn't. Diesel protects the high-pressure pump and every injector as it passes; water gives none of that, which is a separate kind of harm.
Why AdBlue in a diesel is regularly more major than petrol
Petrol put into a diesel on Shell's forecourt makes your fuel watery — that is the whole problem. It mixes with your diesel, and whilst it's inside the tank it causes no damage; the harm comes from running the motor on it.
AdBlue in a diesel is a problem of the wrong substance altogether. Not burning, it can't just be run through. It does not stay mixed, so it cannot be diluted. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your motor "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether your car is in Hove or the middle of Preston.
The good news is the same as with petrol. Emptying a tank is the easiest part on any fuel system, and without start-up, the AdBlue stays in there — wherever across East Sussex your car has stopped.
Preston: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank
Many cars place the AdBlue filler alongside the diesel one, now and then behind one flap, and after dark the two can appear the same. No one means it. Usually it is never the forecourt: a driver picks up a bottle heading home and tips it in outside the house.
It tends to happen in a couple of familiar ways. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up occurs in a hurry outside Stanford Infant School. Someone tips the bottle in outside their house, just off Stanford Road, as the day ends. Or a driver new to that flap tops up your car after dark, parked in the car park by The Chimney House.
The least known vehicles see it the most — hire cars, new cars, company cars, and the other vehicle in a family with both fuels. An identical slip, same first response — keep it off — wherever you are around Preston or the remainder of East Sussex.
Started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Preston?
Then the AdBlue has left that tank. Your filter and lines have had it sucked along, and any running takes it on to the high-pressure pump and each injector.
Maybe coming back from Preston Park Rock Gardens, or part way across Preston, your engine might go rough, smoke, lose power, flash your dash or cut out. When you safely can, pull over and turn it off — with no restarting to test. With each start, more of that is pulled through.
Preston lies under 25 miles from the M23; if you were on it, leave at the next junction and stop somewhere safe rather than driving on.
Hopping across Preston to the car park by Exeter Street Hall is one thing; driving towards Brighton and Hove, under 3 miles away, is something else, since every mile carries the AdBlue further in. So mileage matters. Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.
Once your engine has been started, the flush takes in more, and all of it is done where the car has come to a stop. Very seldom does it leave permanent damage if it's spotted early.
What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Preston?
A street by Booth Museum of Natural History, a driveway, a layby or a forecourt: anywhere your car has stopped around Preston, we come to it. Before anything else our engineers ask what was put in, about how much, and whether your motor has been run, because those replies determine this work.
Then your tank is emptied where the vehicle waits, so the contaminated fuel and the AdBlue come out together. A full flush matters far more with AdBlue than with petrol, because residue will not wash out on its own. Fresh diesel goes in after the filter is cleaned — or swapped, when it needs to be — and then the vehicle is tested. Engine not run? In that case expect roughly half an hour on site for most jobs. Explosion-proof pumps mean a live forecourt safe to work on, and they're quiet enough not to disturb the neighbours at night.
Last, your system is bled with clean diesel. Firing it up comes next, and then you set off from where the vehicle is parked, by London Road (Brighton) or on a driveway around Preston. Before we go, our technicians check it's running correctly with clean diesel in. Our engineers do it all wherever your car has stopped, and it never has to be taken to a garage. You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report later on, which is what insurers want.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Preston
Each job differs, and so no single price is honest. Whether your engine has been running, and for how long, comes first in what shifts the price. How much AdBlue got in comes next, and then the location of the car, since an open driveway is simpler for a van to get to safely than a tight gap behind Al Quds Mosque.
Before any figure, not afterwards, every enquiry from Preston opens with three checks: the fuel, the amount, and if it ran. The replies turn a range into a straight quote.
Our quote is given on the call, before anyone sets off; payment happens on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. Check your policy whilst we're on the way: many carry misfuelling cover.
