Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Primrose Hill: Why It Occurs
AdBlue already in your diesel tank? Then set this page aside a moment, keep your ignition and motor off, and call 0333 366 0103. Caught before your motor runs, it is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Primrose Hill. The remainder of this page explains why it occurs and how to make sure it does not — handy if you're reading before it has happened.
Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor
Not one fluid but two: that is how many modern diesels around Primrose Hill and East Loftus carry, with diesel feeding the engine. Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into your exhaust gas and cleans it.
Each tank comes with one filler of its own. Plenty of cars share a single flap for both, while some put the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet. At the pump, your diesel side is topped up constantly. Seldom topped up, AdBlue usually comes out of a bottle, tipped by a driver who has to stop and think which filler it needs. It's in the gap that the slip happens.
How AdBlue in your diesel tank occurs in Primrose Hill
Carelessness rarely explains it. Instead is three things lining up at once.
First, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a warning from the car, and running dry means limp mode — hence a rushed top-up, perhaps before work off Angling Gardens, perhaps outside Moon Fleet on the way home after work.
The old car's filler is where your hand reaches — but a hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers somewhere else. That's a second thing: a strange vehicle.
Lastly, the bottle fits: a diesel filler or AdBlue one, it slides in just as easily, and after the tip starts, no part halts it. Whether it occurs in Skinningrove or the middle of Primrose Hill, it's the same few seconds.
Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?
Be it a Primrose Hill forecourt or a drive over in Loftus, spend a few seconds on these before any goes in.
- Position misleads; the cap does not. AdBlue caps are often blue or bear the name "AdBlue" — diesel caps normally do not.
- On plenty of vehicles, the size tells: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.
- A label inside the fuel flap often shows which fuel goes where, on many cars. Look for it.
- Cannot see it next to the diesel filler? In that case look beneath the bonnet or inside your boot — the owner's manual says which.
- Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park at Saltburn? Ask whoever drove the vehicle last before leaving, not when the light comes on.
How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank
A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in North Yorkshire that is.
- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Mill Lane.
- Silly as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap does the trick — after you have found the filler and read the cap.
- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.
- Slowly does it, through the bottle's own spout, until it's full or the bottle runs out.
- Only then, start the vehicle: close the cap, check again, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.
If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there. Never go on to stage five.
AdBlue in your diesel tank already, around Primrose Hill?
Then the order of things is short. Do not start your motor. The fuel pump starts on plenty of diesels the moment your ignition is switched on — so keep it off. Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is pulled from.
At a forecourt — Asda, BP Saltburn or another — the attendants will normally help push your car clear, if you ask. At home around Primrose Hill? So your car stays where it is.
If your motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off. Come off the A1(M) — under 25 miles out of Primrose Hill — at the next exit. A short hop across Primrose Hill is a smaller job than a run towards Sunderland, under 50 miles away, so tell us roughly how far it went.
Primrose Hill: what occurs when we get there
We come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Whitecliffe Academy, close to St Helen or on your own drive. The answers determine the work and our quote, so our engineers ask what got in, about how much, and whether it's run. On the call itself, you are told our quote — ahead of anything else.
Draining that tank comes next, then a full flush of your system. AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why that counts more here than with petrol. A test is at the end: before that, fresh diesel goes in, and the fuel filter is cleaned or changed if necessary. Then we start the car and make sure it runs smoothly before we leave.
Unstarted vehicles mostly need a half-hour visit after arrival. The equipment is fine on a live forecourt, and hushed enough for a residential street after dark. Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you are given the paperwork an insurer asks for: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice. Before we get there, have a look at your insurance documents; many include cover for misfuelling.

The vehicle doesn't need to move. We drain it where it is — a side street close to Land of Iron, a lay-by on the way to TVWT Cattersty Gill, a drive. Tricky to pin down, like the back of Pigeon Man? By a border? Checking is better than assuming, and so ring.
