Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Primsland: Why It Occurs

Stop reading for a moment if the diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, then phone 0333 366 0103. Caught before the engine runs, it's generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Primsland. If you're reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it does not.

Why does AdBlue in a diesel motor need its own filler?

No single liquid but two: that's how plenty of modern diesels near Primsland and Shernal Green run, with diesel feeding the engine. The exhaust, not the motor, is where AdBlue ends up: sprayed into the fumes to clean them, from its own tank.

Each tank comes with a filler of its own. On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet. Diesel gets filled on each forecourt visit, week in, week out. Much less frequently, the AdBlue side gets filled — mostly from a bottle, by a person thinking about where it goes. The slip lives in that gap.

AdBlue in the diesel tank around Primsland: how it occurs

Seldom is it carelessness: normally three things line up.

Hurry follows from the warning. Your car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up happens quickly, before work on a driveway off Shire Way, or on the way home in the car park outside Ale Hub.

New-to-you vehicles come next, as well. Rentals, new cars and company vehicles put their fillers differently, and habit goes for the cap it used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the pour once it has started. It's a few seconds, be it out in Hadzor or bang in the centre of Primsland.

Flushing a diesel fuel system after AdBlue, Primsland

Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Look at these before pouring, at a forecourt around Primsland or a drive out in Droitwich Spa. A few seconds, that's all.

  • Colour and marking: an AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually does not. Trust the cap, not its position.
  • Plenty of motors fit AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.
  • Lift the filler flap and look for a label — plenty of cars mark what belongs in each inlet right there.
  • The handbook. If your filler is not by your diesel cap, it's in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.
  • Whoever had it before knows. Check as you collect a hire car or company car — at Droitwich Spa's car park, perhaps — rather than once the light comes on.

Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

When the light goes on, anywhere in Worcestershire, follow this routine.

  • Switch off after you park — flat ground, motor stopped, and not in a rush beside Arkle Close on the verge.
  • Locate the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew it. It sounds daft. It does the trick.
  • The diesel cap remains on. When the two share a flap, confirm it is shut before lifting the bottle.
  • Slowly is best, through the bottle's own spout, until it is full or the bottle runs out.
  • Only then, start the vehicle: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there. Skip stage five entirely.

Primsland: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Brief order, then. Top of that: your engine stays off. The fuel pump runs on many diesels as soon as your ignition is switched on — so keep it off. AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is pulled from — so don't top up with diesel to dilute it.

The staff at Sainsbury's, Valero or any forecourt will normally help to push your car away when you ask. Leave it where it is if you are on your own driveway around Primsland.

If the engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off. Come off the M5 — under a mile out of Primsland — at the first exit. A short hop across Primsland is a smaller job than a run towards Worcester, under 10 miles away, so tell us roughly how far it went.

What takes place when our technicians arrive in Primsland

Our technicians come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside St Peter's Droitwich CofE Academy, near Droitwich Spa Lawn Tennis Club or on your own driveway. Our technicians ask what was put in, roughly how much, and if it's run, because the answers determine the work and our quote. No one sets off until you have heard the quote over the phone.

Emptying that tank comes next, followed by a thorough flush of the system. AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why that counts more with AdBlue than with petrol. The filter flushed or, if needed, replaced; clean diesel in; and then a check of the car. Before we go, our technicians fire it up and check that it's running correctly.

Using pumps fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs where the engine has not run need roughly half an hour after we are there. Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork an insurer asks for: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice. Misfuelling cover is included in many insurance policies — and so make use of the wait to look at yours.
