AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Priorslee: How It Occurs and How to Prevent It
If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and your ignition off and call 0333 366 0103. Around Priorslee, finding it before the engine runs normally leaves a drain and a thorough flush where it stands. Nothing happened yet? Further down, the page covers the reasons it happens and the how to avoid it altogether.
AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank
Diesel goes to the engine — yet many current diesels seen round Priorslee and St Georges carry a second fluid as well. AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.
Each tank has its own filler. On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet. The diesel side is fuelled at the pump all the time. The AdBlue side is fuelled far less often, normally from a bottle, and usually by someone who has to stop and think where it goes. That gap is where the mistake lives.
How does AdBlue in your diesel tank occur around Priorslee?
Carelessness seldom explains it. Instead is three things lining up at once.
On a drive off Everglade Road before work, or in the car park at Flaming Grill on the way home: that is where the rushed top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it's gone, limp mode follows.
Then the car is new. A hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and your hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.
A spouted bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. So the pour, after started, carries on. The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Priorslee or out in Stafford Park.
Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?
Before you tip anything, whether on a driveway in Redhill or a forecourt around Priorslee, check these. They take a couple of seconds.
- Blue and marking: an AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally doesn't. Trust the cap, not where it sits.
- On many cars, size gives it away: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.
- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Many motors say there which fuel goes where.
- The handbook says where it lives if the filler isn't next to your diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.
- The previous driver knows. Ask as you collect a rental or company car — from Telford Central's car park, perhaps — not when the light comes on.
How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank
The day the light comes on, wherever across Shropshire, use this routine.
- Not in a rush on the side of Pitchford Drive, not on a slope, not with your engine running: park and switch off first.
- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it works.
- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the car on.
- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.
- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.
Find at stage two or three that it's already gone into your diesel side? Then stop just there. Stage five is off limits.
AdBlue in your diesel tank already, around Priorslee?
The short order of things, beginning with not starting your engine. The fuel pump runs on many diesels the moment the ignition goes on — and so leave it off. Don't top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is pulled from.
Ask the staff to help roll the vehicle away from the pump if you're at a forecourt — the Shell, the Sainsbury's or somewhere else. Leave it where it is if you are on your own driveway around Priorslee.
Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the engine has already run. Leave the M54 — under a mile out of Priorslee — at the first exit. Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Wolverhampton, under 15 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Priorslee.
What happens when we turn up around Priorslee
Outside Priorslee Academy, near St George or on your own drive: wherever your car has stopped, our engineers come to it. Our engineers ask what went in, roughly how much, and if it's run, since those answers decide this work and our quote. On the call itself, you hear the quote — before anything else.
Your system is then rinsed thoroughly, after the tank is emptied. With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own. The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the car is tested. Before we go, our engineers start the engine and check that it's running properly.
Unrun vehicles usually mean a half-hour job after the moment we arrive. The kit is fine on a live filling station, and hushed enough for a residential street late at night. You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer. Before we get there, take a look at your insurance documents; plenty carry cover for misfuelling.
