Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Purston Jaglin: Why It Occurs

Keep your engine and ignition off then ring 0333 366 0103 now — reading can wait when AdBlue is already in the diesel tank. Around Purston Jaglin, catching it before the engine runs normally leaves a drain and a full flush on the spot. The rest of this page explains why it takes place and how to ensure it does not — useful if you're reading ahead of time.

AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

Diesel goes to your engine — but many newer diesels driven around Purston Jaglin and Strawberry Hill carry a second fluid as well. Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into your exhaust gas to clean it.

Each tank comes with one filler of its own. On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet. Topping up the diesel side at the petrol pump goes on all the time. Much less regularly, the AdBlue side is filled — mostly from a bottle, by a person thinking about where it goes. The error lives in that gap.

Purston Jaglin: how AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place

Carelessness rarely explains it. What does is three things lining up together.

On a drive off Wellgarth Road before work, or in the car park outside Travellers Rest heading home: that's where the hurried top-up takes place. Why the rush? As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and once it's empty, limp mode follows.

Unfamiliar vehicles come second, too. Hire cars, new cars and company vehicles place their fillers in new places, and habit goes for the cap used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the pour after it has started. Featherstone or the middle of Purston Jaglin: it is the same few seconds either way.

Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Before you pour anything, whether on a drive in Hessle or a forecourt in Purston Jaglin, check these. They take a few seconds.

  • Read the cap instead of going by position: AdBlue caps are frequently blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones normally aren't.
  • Check the size: the smaller neck is, on plenty of cars, the AdBlue one.
  • Check inside the fuel flap: plenty of cars carry a label there saying which fuel goes where.
  • In your boot or under the bonnet: that's where the filler is if it's not by your diesel cap, and the handbook says which.
  • Collecting a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park at Featherstone? Check with the person who drove the car last before you set off, not when the light comes on.

Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

On the day the light comes on — anywhere it is across West Yorkshire — a routine to use.

  • Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with your motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Beech Tree Road.
  • Daft as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew the cap works — after you've found the filler and read the cap.
  • If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the car on.
  • Stop when the tank fills or the bottle is empty; before that, pour slowly through the own spout.
  • Before starting the car, close the cap and look a second time that the diesel cap was never opened off.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there. Leave out step five entirely.

Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Purston Jaglin?

Don't start your motor: that is how the short order of things begins. Don't switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump. Do not top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is pulled from.

If you're on a forecourt, whether it's the Gulf or the BP, ask the attendants to help roll the vehicle away from the petrol pump. If you are on your own drive in Purston Jaglin, leave the vehicle where it stands.

Where the motor has run by now, stop safely and turn the vehicle off. Leave the M62 — under 3 miles out of Purston Jaglin — at the first exit. Roughly how far did it go? Crossing Purston Jaglin is less a job than a run of under 10 miles to Wakefield, and so tell us.

What occurs when our engineers arrive around Purston Jaglin

Outside Featherstone Purston Infant School, near St Thomas or on your own drive: wherever the vehicle has stopped, we come to it. We ask what went in, roughly how much, and whether it has run, since those replies settle this work and our price. The quote comes over the phone, ahead of any van leaving.

The fuel system is then cleaned thoroughly, once that tank is cleared. With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own. A test is at the end: before that, clean diesel goes in, and the fuel filter is cleaned or changed as needed. Before we go, our engineers start the engine and confirm that it is running correctly.

If the engine hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark. Nothing upfront; you settle up that day. At the end, a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer go to you for the insurer. Misfuelling cover is part of many insurance policies — so use the wait to check yours.
