What Now? AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Quadring

What to do about AdBlue in a diesel tank depends on one thing more than any other: whether the motor has run since it was put in. Over in Gosberton or here around Quadring, an unstarted motor should stay unrun. Leave your engine and the ignition off then call 0333 366 0103; it is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Quadring. Already run? Pull over when you safely can, then switch it off. Step one remains the same, even though the work is bigger.

Wherever in Lincolnshire it happened, one of the situations below matches yours.

AdBlue in a diesel on a Quadring forecourt

Just at this point, bottle still in your hand, you realise that the cap you opened was the wrong one, right at the petrol pump. It could be the Esso, or the Shell, or a different forecourt in Quadring.

Meaning? Finding out on the forecourt is as good as it gets. No pump has pulled it through, so the AdBlue sits just inside your tank.

Clearing the petrol pump is no reason to start it — so don't get back in. Ring us from the forecourt once your car is in a bay — the attendants will lend a hand to push it — and keep the bottle. If it can't be moved, it can be drained at the pump: the equipment is explosion-proof and fine on a busy forecourt.

Quadring, at home: AdBlue in your diesel tank

For days the dashboard had been nagging you. A bottle bought at the garage, emptied in at the drive — and it was only by the bin that the cap got a second look. Homes just off Town Drove are caught out as often as anywhere else.

What it means: if you have not driven since, this is almost as good as the forecourt. Diesel and AdBlue keep separate: the AdBlue drops to the floor of your tank and stays there, however long it waits.

What to do: leave the keys inside the house so nobody moves your car in the morning. Then call. Church End or Quadring: wherever your drive is, that is where it gets drained. Late-night drains beside a house are no problem: the pumps are low-noise.

Quadring: set off with AdBlue in a diesel?

A mile or two after filling up, the motor began playing up: rough running, smoke, lost power, lights on your dash. Water Gate, say, or the route towards Peterborough — a run of under 25 miles.

The point: your system has drawn AdBlue in already. Mileage sets how deep it gets: filter and lines first, then the injection pump and every injector. It travels deeper with every mile covered and each restart.

Next: pick a sensible spot, stop, then turn the motor off. Quadring sits under 25 miles from the A1(M); on it, come off at the next junction instead of pushing on for the services. Starting it again to test achieves nothing — AdBlue never clears itself. Phone, saying how far your car went.

A hire or company car with AdBlue in the wrong tank?

It's a motor you have had for a week. Your own car either does without AdBlue or keeps it somewhere different, so nothing warned you the AdBlue inlet sits just beside the diesel. Anywhere you happen to be across Lincolnshire, any driver could be caught.

Put simply: an extra step on top of the situations above, and those depend on if it has run. Many hire and company contracts want the owner to approve work on your car.

Next: phone the rental company or the fleet manager first, and then us — settling it before we arrive is quicker. Leave the car switched off as the reply arrives, even if you are waiting at Swineshead or close to Quadring Church Hall.

Not sure it was AdBlue in your diesel tank, Quadring?

"I think so" is sometimes as honest as it gets. Too light, that bottle; a hint of ammonia round the filler; a hazy memory of which cap. Look familiar? A rushed stop by the gates of Quadring Cowley & Brown's Primary School, or a call to a friend in Donington South Ing: both fits.

Put simply: spillage near the filler leaves your engine unharmed. The diesel tank with AdBlue in it is another matter. Firing up the car cannot tell you which, and if there is AdBlue in that tank it will draw it in.

Take it that it got in, and don't start the key. Ring and give what you saw: we'd sooner confirm a tank free of AdBlue than empty one after your engine has been run.

What every AdBlue drain around Quadring has in common

Each situation gets the same opening to the job. Three things come when our engineers reach the car — at a forecourt, a drive, a street by St. Margaret or the car park at White Hart: the fluid, the amount, and if it has been started. Replies shape the job; the quote follows on the call while no one has set off yet.

Emptying that tank comes next, followed by a careful flush — more vital after urea than with petrol, because crystals and corrosion won't clear by themselves, no matter how long you wait. Last are your filter, cleaned or renewed as needed; clean diesel; and a check of your car. If your engine hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we're there.

Our engineers start it last. Before our engineers head off, it is tested to make sure it runs correctly on fresh diesel. The whole job is done where your car is, and when it's caught early, long-term damage is very uncommon. For your insurer: an engineer's report and the VAT invoice. For you: payment that day, no money in advance. Check your insurance while we arrive: misfuelling cover is included in many policies.
