AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Ramslye: What Now?

All of that hinges on one detail: whether your motor has been run since the AdBlue went in — far more than anything else. Over in Denny Bottom or here in Ramslye, an unrun engine should stay unrun. Leave your motor and the ignition off and call 0333 366 0103; it's normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Ramslye. Pull over the minute you safely can then turn off, if it has been run. It is a larger job, yet step one does not change.

Match what happened to one of the ones below, wherever across Kent you are.

On a Ramslye forecourt with AdBlue in a diesel

Only at this point, nozzle still in your hand, you realise that the cap you took off was the wrong one, there at the pump. Whether Sainsbury's, Esso or somewhere else around Ramslye, the situation is identical.

Meaning? Spotting it here is the best it can be. No pump has drawn it in, so the AdBlue sits just in the tank.

Clearing the pump is no excuse to run it — so don't get back in. Three jobs: a push into a bay with the staff helping, the receipt kept, and a ring to us from the forecourt. Emptying it right at the pump is fine if it can't be moved, since the equipment is explosion-proof.

AdBlue in your diesel tank at home around Ramslye

For days the dashboard had been warning you. Picked up a container, tipped it in at home, recycled the empty — and only then checked the cap a second time, after the fact. It occurs on driveways just off Saunders Road as often as anywhere.

Meaning? Provided the vehicle has not been driven since, it's second to the forecourt case. Being unable to mix, AdBlue drops to the base inside the tank and waits. A night parked changes nothing.

What to do: leave the keys inside the house so nobody moves your car in the morning. Then ring. Your drive is where it gets emptied, whether in Ramslye or Hungershall Park. The pumping kit runs quiet enough not to disturb the street at night.

On the road around Ramslye with AdBlue in a diesel

You filled up, set off, and a mile or two later the motor began to run roughly, smoke, lose power or light up the dashboard. Anywhere on Charlton's Way or on the road to Brighton and Hove — under 50 miles away.

What it means: your fuel system has pulled the AdBlue in. Mileage sets how far it gets: filter and lines to begin with, then the high-pressure pump and every injector. It goes deeper with every extra mile driven and every restart.

Pull in somewhere safe — that's the first step — then turn it off. Service stations farther on are too far: from the M25, under 15 miles out of Ramslye, take the first junction. It won't have cleared, and so there's no point restarting to find out. Roughly how far had it go? Tell us when you call.

AdBlue in the wrong tank: hire, lease and company motors

A week back, the car was new to you. Your own car either has no AdBlue or puts it elsewhere, so nothing warned you the AdBlue cap was just next to your diesel. Wherever you are around Kent, any driver could be caught.

The upshot: exactly as above, divided by if it ran, only with an added step. The owner often needs to sign off any work, under many hire and company contracts.

Settling it before we turn up is faster, so phone the rental company or your fleet manager, then us. If you are stuck in the car park outside Tunbridge Wells, or by Showfields Hall, whilst you wait for an answer, leave the car off.

Ramslye: unsure whether it was AdBlue in your diesel tank?

"I think so" is sometimes the most honest as it gets. Which cap was taken off, you cannot recall; but the bottle weighs less than expected, and ammonia lingers by the filler. A rushed stop by the gates of St Mark's Church of England Primary School, or a visit to a friend in Rusthall: either fit.

The upshot: the motor isn't hurt by some AdBlue splashed on the outside. If it's inside your diesel tank, though, it does. If there is AdBlue in the tank, starting your car would suck it in, and it wouldn't tell you which either.

Your move: act as though it did, and don't start your engine. Tell us what you saw on the phone. A clean tank checked counts as a better outcome than a run one drained.

Ramslye: what every AdBlue drain has in common

No matter the situation, one opening applies. Our engineers come to your car, whether it is at a forecourt, a driveway, the car park at The Ragged Trousers or a side street near Showfields, and ask three things: what was put in, about how much, and if the motor has been run. Your price comes over the phone, before a van leaves, and those answers shape the work.

Then your tank is drained and the system purged thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol: AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't rinse out on its own. Fresh diesel goes in after the fuel filter has been cleaned or replaced, and your car is then tested. If the engine hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we're there.

We fire it up at the end. Before our engineers go, it's checked to be sure it runs correctly on clean diesel. Long-term damage is very rare when it is caught quickly, and the entire job is done where the vehicle is. For your insurer: the engineer's report and the VAT invoice. For you: payment that day, nothing upfront. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.
