Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Plenty of modern diesels on the roads about Rawdon and Rawdon Carrs carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the engine. Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust gas and cleans it.

Each tank has its own filler. On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet. Topping up the diesel side at the pump goes on constantly. Much less often, the AdBlue side gets filled — mostly from a bottle, by a person working out where it goes. It's in that gap that the slip lives.

How does AdBlue in the diesel tank happen around Rawdon?

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the car goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off New Road Side before work, or in the car park outside The Princess on the way home.

Unfamiliar motors come next, as well. Rentals, new cars and company vehicles place their fillers in new places, and the hand reaches for the cap used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the pour once it has started. Whether it occurs in Henshaw or the middle of Rawdon, it's the same few seconds.

The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

A couple of seconds is all these take — so run through them before you pour anything, on a drive in Westfield or a forecourt around Rawdon.

  • Check the cap instead of going by position: AdBlue ones are often blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones usually are not.
  • Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of cars, the AdBlue one.
  • The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Many cars say there which fuel goes where.
  • The handbook. If the filler isn't by your diesel cap, it's in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.
  • Collecting a hire or company car, say at the car park at Apperley Bridge? Ask the person who drove the vehicle last before leaving, not once the light comes on.

Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

Wherever in West Yorkshire the light comes on, here is a routine for that day.

  • Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with the motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Harrogate Road.
  • Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after finding the AdBlue filler and read it. Daft, yes, but it does the trick.
  • The two behind one flap? Then make sure the lid on your diesel side stays closed ahead of lifting the bottle.
  • Stop when the tank fills or the bottle is empty; until then, pour gently using the built-in spout.
  • Shut the cap, then look again — confirm the diesel cap stayed closed the whole time. After that, start the vehicle.

Find at step two or three that it has already gone into your diesel side? So stop just there. Do not go on to step five.

Rawdon: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

The short order of things, starting with not starting your engine. On many diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so do not switch the vehicle on. Filling up with diesel won't dilute it: instead, AdBlue drops to the base of your tank, just where fuel is drawn from.

If you're on a forecourt, whether it's the Sainsbury's or the another forecourt nearby, ask the staff to help roll the vehicle away from the pump. On your own drive in Rawdon? Then your car stays put.

If the motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off. On the M606, under 10 miles from Rawdon, that means the next exit. Mileage counts — a quick hop across Rawdon makes a smaller job than driving under 10 miles to Bradford — so say roughly how far it went.

Our arrival around Rawdon, and what happens next

Outside Rawdon Littlemoor Primary School, close to Rawdon Library or on your own driveway: wherever your car has stopped, our engineers come to it. Which fluid was put in, the amount, and if it ran: we ask since the replies set the work and price. Nobody sets off before you have heard the quote over the phone.

Draining that tank comes next, followed by a full flush of your system. AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why that matters more with AdBlue than with petrol. Testing is last: before that, fresh diesel is added, and the filter is flushed or changed if necessary. Your engine is fired up next and tested to confirm it runs correctly, all before our technicians head off.

Most jobs are done in about half an hour after we get there, provided the engine hasn't run — and the pumps our engineers use are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet after dark outside a house. The insurer usually wants an engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and both are yours once the job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront. Before we get there, take a look at your insurance documents; plenty include cover for misfuelling.
