AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Rawson Green: Why It Occurs and How to Prevent It

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? Then put this page aside for now, leave the ignition and engine off, and phone 0333 366 0103. Around Rawson Green, finding it before the motor runs usually means a drain and a full flush where it stands. If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it does not.

AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

No single liquid but two: that is how plenty of newer diesels near Rawson Green and Lower Kilburn carry, with diesel feeding your motor. Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into your exhaust stream and cleans it.

Each tank has its own filler. Under one flap, side by side: that's the layout on a lot of vehicles. On others, AdBlue's filler is beneath the bonnet or in your boot instead. The diesel side is fuelled at the petrol pump all the time. A driver who has to stop and think where it goes usually fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less often. The slip lives in that gap.

AdBlue in your diesel tank around Rawson Green: how it takes place

Carelessness rarely causes it. Instead is three things lining up together.

On a driveway off Derby Road before work, or in the car park at The Hunters Arms heading home: that's where the rushed top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low your car warns you, and if it is empty, limp mode follows.

The old car's filler is where the hand reaches — yet a rental car, a new motor or a company car keeps the fillers elsewhere. That's the second thing: a new car.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the tip after it has started. The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Rawson Green or out in Kilburn.

How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Whether a Rawson Green forecourt or a driveway out in Smithy Houses, take a few seconds on these before any is poured in.

  • The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally is not. Read it instead of going by position.
  • The size. On plenty of cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.
  • Check inside the fuel flap: many cars carry a label there saying which fuel goes where.
  • Can't find it next to your diesel filler? Then check below the bonnet or inside the boot — the owner's manual will say which.
  • Whoever had it before knows. Check as you pick up a rental or company car — at Belper's car park, perhaps — rather than once the warning comes on.

Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

When the light goes on, wherever in Derbyshire, follow this routine.

  • Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Bywell Lane.
  • Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after finding the AdBlue filler and reading it. Silly, perhaps, yet it does the trick.
  • The diesel cap stays on. Where the two sit under a flap, confirm it's shut before lifting the bottle.
  • Gently is best, through the bottle's own spout, until it's full or the bottle runs out.
  • Only after that, start your car: close the cap, check again, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Find during the second or third step that the bottle went into the wrong filler? That is where you stop. Stage five stays out.

Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Rawson Green?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start your motor. Don't switch your ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump. Thinning it with extra diesel fails, since AdBlue sinks to the base rather than blending — and that is where your fuel is pulled from.

Ask the staff to help roll the vehicle clear of the petrol pump if you're on a forecourt — the JET, the Morrisons or somewhere else. If you're on your own drive around Rawson Green, leave the vehicle where it is.

When your engine has been run already, pull over somewhere safe then turn it off. On the M1, under 10 miles from Rawson Green, that means the next exit. Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Derby, under 10 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Rawson Green.

Our arrival around Rawson Green, and what takes place next

By Kilburn Junior School, close to Kilburn War Memorial or on your own drive: wherever your car has stopped, our technicians come to it. Both the work and our quote rest on three replies — what liquid, which quantity, and if it's run — so our engineers ask. On the call itself, you hear our quote — before anything else.

After that: draining, then a thorough flush of the entire system. More than with petrol, it counts here: crystals form, certain metals corrode, and nothing washes away on its own, however long it sits. The filter flushed or, where it must be, replaced; clean diesel in; then a test of your vehicle. Before we go, our technicians fire it up and make sure that it's running correctly.

Most jobs are done in about half an hour after our engineers arrive, as long as your engine hasn't run — and the pumps our technicians use are safe on a busy forecourt yet quiet at night outside a house. Nothing in advance; you settle up that day. Afterwards, a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer are handed to you for the insurer. While we travel, have a look at your policy; plenty include cover for misfuelling.
