Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Renishaw: Why It Occurs
If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and the ignition off then call 0333 366 0103. In Renishaw, finding it before your motor turns usually means draining and a full flush where it stands. If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it doesn't.
AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers
No single liquid but two: that is what many modern diesels near Renishaw and Mastin Moor run, with diesel feeding the motor. Its own tank holds it, and from there it goes to the exhaust, where a spray treats the gas.
Different tanks, separate fillers. On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet. At the pump, the diesel side is topped up constantly. Much less often, the AdBlue side gets filled — mostly from a bottle, by someone thinking about where it goes. That gap is where the error lives.
AdBlue in the diesel tank in Renishaw: how it occurs
Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is seldom one of them.
To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a message from the car, and running out means limp mode — so a rushed top-up, perhaps before work off Main Road, or outside Renishaw Miners Welfare on the way home that evening.
Then the car is new. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and your hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.
Third, the spout goes in: diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it slides in as easily, and after the tip begins, no part halts it. Emmett Carr or the middle of Renishaw: it is the same few seconds either way.
Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler
A few seconds is all these take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a drive in Eckington or a forecourt in Renishaw.
- Colour and marking: an AdBlue cap is often blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually does not. Go by the cap, not where it sits.
- Look at the size: the smaller filler neck is, on many cars, the AdBlue one.
- Check inside the fuel flap: plenty of cars carry a label there saying which fuel goes where.
- The handbook. If your filler is not by your diesel cap, it is in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.
- Collecting a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park at Kiveton Bridge? Ask the person who drove it last before you set off, not once the light comes on.
AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank
For the day the light appears — wherever you are around Derbyshire — a routine to use.
- Stop somewhere level, engine off, with time in hand — not rushing on the side of Green Close.
- Find the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew it. It sounds daft. It works.
- The diesel cap remains on. Where the two sit under a flap, confirm it is closed before lifting the bottle.
- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.
- Before starting the vehicle, shut the cap and check a second time that the diesel cap was never came off.
Find at step two or three that it has already gone into your diesel side? So stop right there. Stage five stays out.
AdBlue in your diesel tank already, in Renishaw?
What follows is a short order of things, starting with not starting the engine. The fuel pump starts on many diesels as soon as your ignition is switched on — and so leave it off. Filling up with diesel won't dilute it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the bottom of that tank, just where the fuel is drawn from.
At a forecourt — Pace, JET or any other — the staff will usually help roll the vehicle away, when you ask. Leave it where it is if you're on your own drive around Renishaw.
If your engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off. Renishaw lies under 3 miles from the M1; there, use the first exit. Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Sheffield, under 10 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Renishaw.
What happens when our technicians turn up in Renishaw
The van comes to the vehicle anywhere it has come to rest — your own drive, near St Matthew, or by Renishaw Primary School. Which fluid went in, the amount, and if it ran: our technicians ask since those answers set the work and quote. No one sets off before you have had the quote over the phone.
Draining your tank comes next, followed by a full flush of the system. With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own. Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the car is tested. We don't go until it has been started and is running smoothly.
Using pumps safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where the engine hasn't run take roughly half an hour once our technicians are there. Payment is on the day, not upfront, and you are given the paperwork an insurer wants: an engineer report and a VAT invoice. It's worth checking your insurance while we travel to you: misfuelling cover comes with many policies.

Renishaw and Derbyshire: AdBlue drains across the area
Being a village, Renishaw shares its vans surrounding places — Spinkhill, Westthorpe — right through S postcodes and the surrounding area beyond. Quickest of all: give a S21 3 postcode to the van.
Your car remains put. A driveway, a lay-by on the way to Clinker Wood, a side street near Renishaw Methodist Church: our engineers drain the vehicle where it is. If you are close to a border, or somewhere hard to explain like the back of The Immaculate Conception, ring and ask rather than guessing.
