AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Rhayader? Don't Start It
Engine off, ignition off: that is how you begin if AdBlue has gone into the diesel tank. In plain terms, AdBlue is simply urea in water. Unlike fuel, it neither ignites nor mixes, and nothing happens until the engine sucks it round. Caught before your motor has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Rhayader. Nothing comes before calling 0333 366 0103.
Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank around Rhayader
Do:
- Keys out — that way no one can switch anything on.
- Near moving traffic? Then put the hazard lights on.
- So you can tell us which fluid it was and about what quantity, save your receipt or the empty bottle.
- Call right where you are. Quote a LD6 5 postcode or the closest street sign, and nobody has to search for you.
Not to do:
- Do not start the engine, even for a moment to shift your car.
- Switching the key to ignition alone sets your pump running on many diesels. Avoid it.
- Don't top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue does not mix in diesel; it separates out.
- Don't drive the car anywhere, not even a short distance along East Street.
- No emptying it yourself, at all, on the verge.
Ask the attendants to help you roll the car away from the island if you are at a forecourt in Rhayader, whether it is the Texaco or elsewhere. At home, the vehicle stays exactly where it is.
What AdBlue does in a diesel tank
Meant for your exhaust, AdBlue has no business in the engine. Its own reservoir holds it, and from there it's sprayed into your exhaust, and there it treats the fumes. No part in a fuel pump is designed for this fluid — and no part of it was meant to travel through one.
Poured in with the diesel, it keeps separate rather than blending — entirely unlike fuel. It sinks, since it's denser than diesel, and pools low where the intake draws its fuel from. A vehicle filled on a driveway in Nant-glas overnight and not started since is the straightforward case. Nothing has pulled the AdBlue up so far — though once your engine turns, that is what goes first, directly from the bottom of the tank.
From there it does two kinds of damage. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps working on the parts it reaches for as long as it stays there. Where the AdBlue is in the lines, leaving it till morning in Rhayader makes it worse. Inside that tank alone, waiting costs nothing. Water lubricates nothing. The injection pump and every injector depend on diesel flowing through them, so the water part harms them by itself.
Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is commonly worse
Top up a diesel with petrol in error over at the Esso, and this issue is thinned fuel. It mixes with the diesel, and while it is inside that tank it causes no damage; the harm comes from running your motor on it.
The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a totally wrong liquid. It does not burn, so it can't just be run through. It doesn't stay mixed, so it can't be diluted. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the engine "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether the car is in Llanwrthwl or the middle of Rhayader.
With AdBlue, the good news is no separate from petrol. If the motor has not run, the AdBlue is still in your tank, and your tank is the quickest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever in Powys the car is standing.
AdBlue in a diesel tank in Rhayader: how it ends up there
No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many motors sits right next to your diesel filler, sometimes under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. A container bought when driving home and poured in outside the house, instead of at the forecourt, is the typical route.
It tends to happen in a couple of familiar ways. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up happens in a hurry outside the local primary school. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off North Street. Or the car is topped up in the car park at Castle, in poor light, by someone who has never opened that flap before.
The least familiar cars see it the most — rentals, brand-new cars, company cars, and the spare motor in a family with both fuels. Wherever around Powys, Rhayader included, the mistake doesn't change, and nor does the first step: leave it off.
Rhayader: started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank?
If so, the AdBlue is no longer inside that tank. The fuel filter and pipework have had it sucked through, and some running carries it on to the high-pressure pump and each injector.
You may notice the motor running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, maybe on the way back from Tynypistyll Wood or halfway across Rhayader. No restarting to test: stop when safe, then turn everything off. With each start, more of it is pulled through.
If you were on the M4, under 50 miles from Rhayader, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere safe instead of pressing on.
Every mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in. That is why a hop across Rhayader to park near Rhayader Library and a drive of under 50 miles for Hereford are very different jobs. Tell us about how far it had come.
Once the engine has been run, the flush takes in more, and all of it is done where the car has ended up. Very rarely does it leave permanent damage if it's caught soon.
What emptying AdBlue from a diesel involves in Rhayader
A street by Rhayader Leisure Centre, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt: anywhere the car has come to rest around Rhayader, our engineers come to it. Which fluid was put in, roughly how much, and whether the engine has turned over: we ask before all else, since those decide the work.
On the spot, your tank is then emptied, and all of the polluted diesel and the urea come out as one. With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, the flush counts: the whole system is flushed right through since residue will not flush out unaided. A test of the car comes last, once clean diesel is added and the filter gets cleaned or, where necessary, replaced. About half an hour once we arrive is usual for most jobs when your engine has not run. The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.
Priming your system with fresh diesel comes at the end. Whether it is a parking space outside Llandrindod or a driveway in Rhayader, that is where we fire it up and you drive off. We make sure it runs smoothly on fresh diesel before we leave. No workshop is required at any stage, with the entire job done on the spot. The insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — both yours afterwards.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Rhayader: the cost of fixing it
There is no honest single quote, since the jobs aren't the same. Whether your engine has run, and for how long, comes first in what changes the price. How much AdBlue got in comes next, and then the location of the vehicle, since an open drive is simpler for our van to get to safely than a tight gap behind St. Clements Church.
Before a quote, never afterwards, each enquiry from Rhayader opens with the same three checks: the fuel, the quantity, plus if the engine ran. Once those are answered, a range becomes a single fixed number.
Quoted by phone before the engineer heads out, the job is paid for on the day — card or phone, no deposit. Check your insurance whilst we're on the way: plenty carry misfuelling cover.
