Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Ridgeway: Why It Happens
If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and the ignition off then phone 0333 366 0103. A drain and a full flush, done just where your car stands in Ridgeway, is normally all it needs if caught before the motor runs. The remainder of this page explains why it occurs and how to make sure it does not — useful if you are reading before it has happened.
Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?
Diesel feeds the motor — yet many modern diesels seen about Ridgeway and Clay Hill hold another liquid as well. Your exhaust, not the motor, is where AdBlue goes: sprayed into the gas to fresh it, from a separate tank.
Each tank comes with a filler of its own. Under one flap, side by side: that's the layout on a lot of cars. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler sits beneath the bonnet or in your boot instead. Topping up your diesel side at the petrol pump goes on constantly. The AdBlue side is topped up far less frequently, normally from a bottle, and normally by someone who has to stop and think where it goes. The error lives in that gap.
How does AdBlue in the diesel tank take place around Ridgeway?
Carelessness rarely explains it. Instead is three things lining up at once.
On a drive off Irena Road before work, or in the car park at The Greyhound heading home: that is where the hurried top-up happens. Why the rush? As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it's empty, limp mode kicks in.
Then, the hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old motor — since a hire car, a new car or a company car places the fillers somewhere your last one didn't.
A spout-topped bottle meets no obstacle at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. So the pour, after started, carries on. Speedwell or the heart of Ridgeway: it is the same few seconds in both.
Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?
Before you tip anything, whether on a drive in Clay Bottom or a forecourt around Ridgeway, check these. They take a couple of seconds.
- Where it sits can mislead; the cap doesn't. AdBlue caps are often blue or bear the word "AdBlue" — diesel caps normally don't.
- Many cars give AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.
- Look inside your fuel flap: plenty of cars have a label there saying which fuel goes where.
- The handbook says where it lives when your filler is not next to the diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.
- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Stapleton Road.
How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank
On the day the light comes on — anywhere you are around Bristol — a routine to use.
- Pull in somewhere level, engine off, with time in hand — never rushing on the side of Ridgeway Road.
- Locate the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and speak the word "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly. It works.
- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the car on.
- Gently does it, through the bottle's own spout, till it's full or the bottle runs out.
- Close the cap and check again. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.
Find at stage two or three that it has already gone into your diesel side? So stop right there. Never go on to step five.
Put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Ridgeway already?
The short order of things, beginning with not starting your motor. The fuel pump runs on many diesels as soon as the ignition is switched on — so keep it off. Thinning it with extra diesel fails, because AdBlue sinks to the base rather than blending — and that's where your fuel is pulled from.
Ask the staff to help roll your car clear of the pump if you are on a forecourt — the Morrisons, the Texaco or somewhere else. Leave it where it is if you're on your own drive around Ridgeway.
Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if the engine has already run. Leave the M32 — under 3 miles out of Ridgeway — at the first exit. Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Bristol, under 5 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Ridgeway.
What takes place when we get there in Ridgeway
The van comes to the vehicle anywhere it has come to rest — your own driveway, near Qur'an Academy, or by Chester Park Junior School. What fluid went in, the quantity, and whether it ran: our technicians ask because the answers decide the work and price. On the phone call itself, you hear our quote — before anything else.
Emptying your tank comes next, then a full flush of the fuel system. Unlike petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and attacks certain fuel-system metals, and neither washes away by itself. Hence it matters more. Filter cleaned or, if needed, swapped; clean diesel in; then a check of your car. The motor is started next and checked to be sure it runs correctly, all before our technicians leave.
With pumps safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which your engine hasn't run need roughly half an hour after we arrive. The insurer will ask for the engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and both are yours once the job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront. It's worth looking at your policy as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover comes with many policies.

The vehicle does not need to shift. A drive, a lay-by on the way to Ridgeway Playing Fields, a side street close to Faizan-E-Madinah: our engineers drain the vehicle where it is. Tricky to pin down, like the back of St John's, Fishponds? By a border? Asking beats assuming, and so phone.
