Rift House: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?
Stop reading a minute if your diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and phone 0333 366 0103. In Rift House, finding it before the motor turns normally leaves draining and a full flush where it stands. If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it does not.
Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?
Plenty of modern diesels on the roads round Rift House and Stranton carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the engine. Your exhaust, not your motor, is where AdBlue ends up: sprayed into the fumes to fresh it, from a separate tank.
Separate tanks, different fillers. On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet. Diesel gets filled at every filling station call-out, again and again. Seldom filled, AdBlue usually goes in out of a bottle, poured by someone who must stop and think what cap it needs. The error lives in that gap.
AdBlue in the diesel tank around Rift House: how it takes place
It's rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.
First, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a message from the vehicle, and running out leads to limp mode — hence a rushed top-up, maybe before work off Walpole Road, or at Hartlepool Catholic Club on the way home after work.
New-to-you cars are next, too. Rentals, new vehicles and company cars put their fillers in new places, and the hand reaches for the cap used on the old one.
And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the tip once it has started. Whether it occurs in Foggy Furze or the middle of Rift House, it's the same few seconds.
How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one
Look at these before pouring, at a forecourt in Rift House or a drive over in Bellevue. A few seconds, that's all.
- Check the cap rather than going by where it sits: AdBlue ones are commonly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps usually aren't.
- The size. On plenty of cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.
- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Many cars say there which fuel goes where.
- In your boot or under the bonnet: that is where your filler sits if it is not by the diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.
- The person who drove it last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park at Hartlepool, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.
Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank
On the day the light comes on — wherever you are around Durham — a routine to follow.
- Not in a rush on the side of Taybrooke Avenue, not on a slope, not with your engine running: park and switch off first.
- Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and say the word "AdBlue" out loud as unscrewing it. It seems daft. It does the trick.
- The two under one flap? So make sure the lid on the diesel side stays shut ahead of raising the bottle.
- Finish when the tank is topped up or the bottle runs dry; until then, pour gently through its own spout.
- Only then, start the car: close the cap, check again, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.
If at step two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there. Leave out stage five entirely.
Rift House: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?
Don't start the engine: that's where the short order of things begins. On many diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so do not switch the car on. AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is pulled from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.
The attendants at JET, Esso or any forecourt will usually lend a hand pushing the car away if asked. If you're on your own drive around Rift House, leave it where it sits.
If your motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off. The next junction means the place to leave when you're on the A1(M), under 15 miles from Rift House. Our arrival around Rift House, and what happens next
Our engineers come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Rift House Primary School, near The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints or on your own drive. The answers settle this work and our price, and so we ask what got in, about how much, and if it has run. Nobody sets off before you have had our quote over the phone.
Next: a drain, then a full flush of the whole system. More than with petrol, it matters here: the crystals form, certain metals are attacked, and none of that washes out unaided, however long it sits. The filter cleaned or, if it must be, replaced; fresh diesel in; and then a test of the vehicle. Before we leave, we fire it up and make sure that it's running properly.
If your motor hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night. Your insurer will ask for the engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and you get both at the end. Payment comes on the day, with no deposit. Before we get there, have a look at your insurance documents; many include cover for misfuelling.
