AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Roaches? Don't Start It

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, the ignition remains off and so does your motor. Urea dissolved in water is what AdBlue is. As it is water-based, it will not burn and won't blend with diesel; damage only comes when your pump starts pulling it. If the motor hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally emptied and thoroughly cleaned where the car sits around Roaches. First, call us on 0333 366 0103.

Roaches, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do straight away

Do these:

  • Keys out — that way no one can power anything on.
  • Near moving traffic? Then put the hazards on.
  • The empty bottle or your receipt shows us the fluid and the amount, so don't throw it out.
  • The van locates you fastest with a postcode starting OL5 9, or just the name of a street nearby, and so phone from the spot.

Never:

  • No starting your engine — not briefly, not to shift your car.
  • Plenty of diesels power their fuel pump the instant the ignition goes on, so leave the car off.
  • No more fuel added. The AdBlue won't blend, so it is wasted.
  • Don't drive the vehicle anywhere, not even a short stretch up Moorlands Drive.
  • Emptying that tank on your own beside the road is not worth trying.

Rolling the vehicle off the island is a job for staff to help with, wherever Roaches forecourt you are on, the Gulf included. Stopped on your own drive? Then it stays exactly as it is.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Not the engine but the exhaust is where AdBlue is meant to go. Stored in a dedicated tank, it's squirted into the exhaust stream to treat the gases. A fuel pump isn't made to cope with it, and AdBlue was never intended to go through one.

It does not combine. After it's poured into a tank of diesel, AdBlue acts not at all like diesel. It's heavier than diesel, so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of that tank, which is where the pickup pulls fuel from. The first thing the system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a motor that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Woodend last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the simple case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of the tank, and nothing has sucked it in.

From there it causes two kinds of damage. Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it strands urea that crystallises in filters and narrow channels; meanwhile, because it eats at certain metals, each part it reaches keeps suffering for as long as it remains in there. Where the AdBlue is in the pipework, waiting overnight in Roaches makes things worse. In your tank alone, waiting does nothing. Diesel protects the injection pump and each injector as it passes; water gives no lubrication, and that is a second form of harm.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is frequently worse

A fault of thinned fuel is what you end up with after fuelling a diesel with petrol at the Shell. Blended through the diesel and sitting unused, it is harmless for now; using your engine does the harm.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid itself is simply the wrong one. Because it does not burn, running it through isn't an option. It doesn't stay mixed, so it cannot be weakened. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the motor "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether the vehicle is in Quickwood or the middle of Roaches.

The same good news holds as with petrol. If the motor hasn't run, the AdBlue is still in the tank, and your tank is the easiest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever around Greater Manchester the car is standing.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Roaches

It is not deliberate. Many vehicles have the AdBlue cap beside the diesel one, now and then behind a single flap, and muddling them up is easy in poor light. A bottle picked up when heading home and poured in outside the house, instead of at the forecourt, is the usual story.

It tends to take place in a couple of familiar ways. Rushing, outside Friezland Primary School, after a warning lamp flashed on during the school run, someone tops up the car. After work, a bottle is tipped in on a drive close to Dysarts Close. Or someone unfamiliar with that flap refills the vehicle after dark, stopped in the car park outside Dysarts Arms.

It crops up the most in a rental, a brand-new car, a company motor, or the other vehicle of a home with one of each fuels — the cars people know least. Same mistake, same first response — leave it off — anywhere you are around Roaches or the remainder of Greater Manchester.

Already started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Roaches?

Then the AdBlue has left the tank. With any running time, it goes on to the high-pressure pump and every injector, after passing via the fuel filter and lines.

You may see the engine running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, maybe on the way back from Mossley Park or halfway across Roaches. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart the vehicle to check. More of it is pulled through with each start.

Roaches sits under 5 miles from the M60; if you were on it, leave by the next junction and stop safely rather than driving on.

How far it went counts. A few hundred yards across Roaches to the car park by Saddleworth Cricket Bowling & Tennis Club is a very different job from a run towards Manchester, under 10 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the fuel system with every mile. Let us know roughly how far it had come.

Once your engine has been started, the flush includes more, and all of it is done where the vehicle has come to a stop. Long-term damage is very rare when it is caught quickly.

Draining AdBlue in a diesel in Roaches: what it takes

A street beside Christ Church, a driveway, a layby or a filling station: anywhere the vehicle has stopped in Roaches, we come to it. Which fluid went in, roughly how much, and if your motor has been run: we check before all else, since those shape the job.

The polluted diesel and the urea leave together after your tank is emptied, on the spot. With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, flushing counts: the fuel system is cleaned right through since residue won't wash out unaided. A test of your vehicle follows last, once clean diesel goes in and your filter gets flushed or, if necessary, replaced. Engine not run? Then expect about half an hour on site for most jobs. The equipment is explosion-proof, and so a live forecourt is no issue, and it is quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

Fresh diesel goes in to bleed your system, and that is the final step. Then our technicians fire it up and you drive off, whether from a parking bay by Greenfield or a driveway in Roaches. Our engineers make sure it runs smoothly on clean diesel before leaving. Our technicians do it all wherever your car has stopped, and it never has to go to a workshop. You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report after that, which is what insurers want.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Roaches?

Every job differs, so not one fixed quote is fair. The price shifts first with how long, if at all, the engine has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that was put in. After that it turns on where the vehicle is and whether our van can reach it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight spot behind Friezland Church Hall.

That's why every call from Roaches starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what was put in, how much, and whether it has run. The answers turn a range into a straight quote.

Quoted on the call before the van sets out, the job is settled on the day — card or phone, nothing in advance. Misfuelling cover is part of plenty of insurance policies, so it pays to look at yours before the van gets there.
