AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Roade? Don't Start It

With AdBlue in the diesel tank, the ignition stays off and so does your engine. Water with urea mixed in it: that is AdBlue. Not like fuel, it neither burns nor mixes, and nothing starts till the engine sucks it through. A drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Roade, is generally what AdBlue in a diesel tank needs — if it is caught before your engine has run. Nothing comes before ringing 0333 366 0103.

Roade, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do straight away

Do:

  • Take the keys out, so nobody switches your ignition on.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all near.
  • The empty bottle or your receipt shows us the fluid and the amount, and so don't bin it away.
  • Call right where you are. Quote a NN7 2 postcode or the nearest street name, and nobody has to hunt for you.

Never:

  • Moving your car just a few yards is no reason to fire up the motor.
  • The ignition remains off: on many diesels, turning it on is enough to run the fuel pump.
  • Pouring in extra diesel doesn't work: AdBlue separates out rather than thinning.
  • Do not drive the vehicle anywhere, not even a short stretch up Church End.
  • By the road, don't attempt draining it yourself.

The staff working at any Roade filling station — the BP included — will usually lend a hand rolling it aside if you ask. Parked on your own driveway? Then it remains just where it is.

What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

Not the engine but the exhaust is where AdBlue is meant to go. Its own reservoir holds it, and from there it is sprayed into the exhaust, and there it treats the fumes. Nothing in it is meant to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is made to handle it.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, once poured in, won't. Its behaviour is nothing like fuel's. It is heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of your tank, which is where the pickup draws fuel from. Easiest of all: one that had AdBlue in Quinton Green last night and hasn't turned since. The AdBlue sits at the foot of that tank, undrawn — though it would be the first thing through if the motor starts, before any diesel at all.

After it is pulled in, the harm takes two forms. Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it strands urea that hardens in filter elements and narrow passages; meanwhile, because it attacks certain metals, each part it reaches suffers for as long as it stays in there. If the AdBlue has reached the pipework, leaving it overnight in Roade leaves things worse. Inside your tank alone, waiting costs nothing. The water in it does damage of its own: your high-pressure pump and your injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Roade

AdBlue in a diesel: why it is commonly worse than petrol

Petrol put into a diesel on Shell's forecourt makes the fuel thin — that is the main fault. No damage is done while it sits put, blended into the diesel — only when your motor runs on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is another matter: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all. It can't just be run through, because it doesn't burn. Nor can it be watered down, because it separates back out — and the following tankful won't rinse away crystals or corrosion. So the flush counts for more here, and turning the key "to see", in the centre of Roade or out in Quinton, costs more than nearly any other error.

The good news is the same as with petrol. Anywhere in Northamptonshire the car has stopped, an unstarted motor leaves the AdBlue still inside the tank: the simplest bit of a fuel system to empty.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Roade: how it ends up there

Many cars place the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel cap, now and then under a single flap, and after dark the two may appear identical. Nobody intends it. A container picked up while heading home and tipped in outside the house, rather than at the forecourt, is the typical route.

The ways it happens are few and familiar. Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside Roade Primary School the top-up is hurried. A driver tips the container in outside their house, just off The Leys, as the day ends. One more pattern: dim light, the car park by The Cock Inn, and a driver opening that flap the first time.

Hired vehicles, brand-new cars, company vehicles, or the second vehicle in a home with one of each: the least known vehicles get it most. Anywhere in Northamptonshire, Roade as well, the slip doesn't change, and nor does the first step: leave it off.

AdBlue in your diesel tank around Roade, and the motor started?

Then your tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. With any running time, it goes on to the injection pump and every injector, after passing through your filter and lines.

You may see the motor running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, perhaps on the way back from Monument Green or halfway across Roade. No restarting to test: pull over once it is safe, then switch everything off. More of that is pulled through with each start.

Leave the M1, under 3 miles from Roade, by the next junction and park somewhere safe, rather than driving on.

Hopping across Roade to the car park by Roade Bowls Club is one thing; heading for Milton Keynes, under 15 miles away, is something else, because every mile carries the AdBlue further in. So mileage matters. About how far it had come is worth telling us.

Wherever the vehicle came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to rinse out after the motor has been started. If it's caught early, long-term damage is very unusual.

What emptying AdBlue from a diesel involves around Roade

A road beside St Mary the Virgin, a drive, a layby or a forecourt: wherever your vehicle has come to rest in Roade, we travel to it. Before anything else our engineers ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether your engine has run, since those answers settle the work.

The contaminated diesel and the urea leave as one when that tank is drained, on the spot. The system is cleaned thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own. The filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested. The majority of these jobs are a half-hour visit once our engineers get there, provided your engine hasn't run. Low-noise enough for use outside a house at night, and fine on a working forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

Bleeding the system with clean diesel comes at the end. Firing it up comes next, and then you drive off from where the car is parked, by Northampton or on a driveway in Roade. The test before we go is that it runs properly on clean diesel. As the job is done in full where the vehicle is, a workshop never comes into it. You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report after that, which is what insurers ask for.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Roade?

Not one single price could be honest, because each job differs. Three things move the price: whether the motor has run and for how long, how much AdBlue was put in, and where your car is. That last one rests on whether a technician can get to it safely, and an open driveway is simpler than a tight gap behind Roade Library.

Before a quote, never after, every call from Roade begins with the same three checks: the liquid, the quantity, plus if it ran. When those are answered, a range becomes a single fixed number.

Before anyone heads out, you hear our quote on the phone. Then payment is on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing in advance. Look at your insurance whilst we're on the way: plenty carry misfuelling cover.
