Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Rosewain: Why It Happens
Pause here for a moment if your diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, then call 0333 366 0103. Caught before your engine runs, it's usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Rosewain. Reading before the event? Then what follows explains how it comes about and what to prevent it happening at all.
Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car
Diesel feeds your engine — but many current diesels seen about Rosewain and Parton carry another fluid too. Its own tank keeps it, and from there it is sent to the exhaust, where a spray treats the fumes.
There is a filler on each tank. Plenty of cars have a single flap for both, while some move the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet. At the petrol pump, the diesel side gets filled all the time. The AdBlue side is fuelled far less often, normally from a bottle, and usually by someone who has to stop and think where it goes. The mistake lives in that gap.
How does AdBlue in the diesel tank occur in Rosewain?
Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things line up.
The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, your vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off A596 before work, or in the car park at the pub in the village on the way home.
Next, the hand reaches for the cap it knew on the old motor — because a rental car, a new car or a company car places the fillers somewhere your last one did not.
A spout-topped bottle meets no resistance at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, after started, keeps on. Micklethwaite or the middle of Rosewain: it takes the same few seconds either way.
Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler
A few seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a driveway in Low Whinnow or a forecourt in Rosewain.
- Blue and lettering: an AdBlue cap is often blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually doesn't. Trust the cap, not where it sits.
- Plenty of vehicles give AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.
- A label inside the fuel flap frequently says which fuel goes where, on plenty of cars. Check for it.
- In your boot or under the bonnet: that is where your filler is if it is not by your diesel cap, and the handbook says which.
- Collecting a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park at Wigton? Ask whoever drove it last before you set off, not once the light goes on.
How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank
For the day the warning appears — wherever you are across Cumbria — a routine to use.
- Not in a rush on the side of King Street, not on a slope, not with your motor running: park then switch off properly.
- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once finding the AdBlue filler and read it. Silly, perhaps, yet it does the trick.
- The diesel cap remains on. Where both share a flap, make sure it is closed before lifting the bottle.
- Slowly is best, through the bottle's own spout, till it's full or the bottle runs out.
- Before you start the vehicle, shut the cap and check again that your diesel cap never came off.
Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you have already poured into the diesel side. Do not go on to step five.
Put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Rosewain already?
The short order of things, beginning with no starting the motor. Keep your ignition off as well, because on many diesels switching it on by itself runs your pump. Thinning it with more diesel won't work, because AdBlue settles to the base instead of mixing — and that is where your fuel is pulled from.
Ask the attendants to help push the car clear of the petrol pump if you are at a forecourt — the BP, the Esso or somewhere else. On your own drive in Rosewain? Then the car remains where it is.
Already run? Stop once it's safe, then turn off. The next exit is the place to come off if you're on the M6, under 10 miles from Rosewain. About how far did it go? Hopping across Rosewain is smaller a job than a trip of under 10 miles to Carlisle, and so say.
Rosewain: what takes place when we turn up
Anywhere the vehicle has stopped, whether outside St Cuthbert's Catholic Primary School, near Greenwood House Folly or on your own drive, the van comes to it. The replies decide this work and the price, and so our engineers ask what went in, about how much, and whether it has run. That price is given on the call, ahead of any van leaving.
Then the tank is emptied and your system cleaned thoroughly. AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own — which is why the flush counts more here than with petrol. Filter cleaned or, if needed, replaced; fresh diesel in; then a test of your vehicle. The engine is started next and tested to confirm it runs properly, all before our engineers head off.
Using pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs where the engine hasn't run need about half an hour after our technicians arrive. You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer. Misfuelling cover is included in many insurance policies — and so use the wait to look at yours.

Moving the car isn't necessary. A drive, a lay-by on the way to Jenkin Wood, a side street near Knox Wood Wildlife Centre: our engineers drain it where it sits. Ring and ask instead of assuming if you are close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain, like the back of Saint Cuthberts.
In short, for Rosewain people
Read the cap before you pour. Petrol in Diesel drains it on the spot, anywhere around Cumbria, if AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank anyway — so leave the car off and ring 0333 366 0103.
