AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Rossett? Don't Start It

If AdBlue has got into the diesel tank, keep your motor off and leave the ignition off. Water with urea mixed in it: that is AdBlue. Not like fuel, it neither ignites nor blends, and nothing starts until your motor sucks it through. Caught before the engine has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Rossett. Phone 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

AdBlue in your diesel tank in Rossett: the first few minutes

Do these:

  • So no one can turn your ignition on, pull your keys out.
  • Put your hazards on if you're anywhere near moving traffic.
  • The empty bottle or the till receipt shows us the fluid and the quantity, and so don't throw it away.
  • Call right where you are. Say a LL12 0 postcode or the closest street name, and no one has to search for you.

Not to do:

  • No starting your motor — not for a second, not to shift the car.
  • Turning your key to ignition alone sets the pump running on many diesels. Avoid it.
  • Pouring in more diesel does not work: AdBlue separates out rather than blending.
  • Even a short stretch down Chester Road is too far to drive it.
  • No draining it yourself, either, at the roadside.

The attendants on duty at any Rossett filling station — the Gulf among them — will normally lend a hand pushing it aside if you ask. On that drive, your car stays exactly where it is.

AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

The engine is not what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is. From a dedicated reservoir it is fed straight to your exhaust, treating what the motor lets out. Not one side suits the other: urea doesn't belong in a pump, and a pump cannot deal with urea.

Inside a diesel tank it acts very differently from fuel. It does not mix in. The intake takes fuel from the lowest part of that tank, and that's just where AdBlue settles: as it is heavier than diesel, it sinks. When your system runs, the AdBlue is top of the list to be pulled through. Until then it sits beneath your diesel, and that is how a vehicle filled in Broadoak last night and not switched on stays the straightforward one, as long as no one turns your key.

After it is pulled in, the harm comes in two forms. Crystals and corrosion. As the water evaporates, it leaves urea that hardens in filter elements and narrow passages; meanwhile, since it eats at some metals, every part it touches suffers for as long as it remains inside. Pipes holding AdBlue spell damage overnight for a car parked around Rossett. Only inside the tank, it stays the same. The water in it does damage of its own: the high-pressure fuel pump and your injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

Why AdBlue in a diesel is frequently more major than petrol

Petrol put into a diesel on Smithy View Service Station's forecourt makes your fuel watery — that is the main problem. Blended through your diesel and left still, it's no threat at that stage; running the motor is the harm.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid as such is simply the wrong one. Not burning, it can't simply be run through. Crystals and corrosion stay through the next tankful, and AdBlue splits back out of your diesel, so thinning it won't help. That is why the flush matters more, and turning the key "to see" does more harm here than nearly any other slip — in Burton or the heart of Rossett equally.

The good news is the same as with petrol. Never run? Then the AdBlue sits only in the tank, the easiest section of the whole system to clear, wherever your car has stopped around Wrexham.

How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Rossett?

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of cars sits right next to your diesel filler, at times under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. A bottle bought when heading home and tipped in outside the house, rather than at the forecourt, is the typical route.

The ways it happens are few and familiar. Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside Dodleston CofE Primary School the refill is rushed. After work, a container goes in on a driveway close to Holt Road. Otherwise, in dim light outside The Golden Lion, the vehicle gets topped up by a driver opening that flap the first time.

The least familiar vehicles see it most — rentals, brand-new ones, company cars, and the spare motor of a home with one of each fuels. Wherever across Wrexham, Rossett included, the mistake does not change, and nor does the first response: keep it off.

Rossett: started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer in that tank. It's been drawn through the fuel filter and your lines, and if your motor ran for any time, it has got to the high-pressure pump and the injectors.

Lumpy running, smoke from the exhaust, dropping power, dashboard warnings or stalling: each might show up, perhaps midway across Rossett or coming back from Marford Wood. No starting it again to check: pull over once it is safe, then switch it off. Each start pulls more of it through.

Rossett lies under 10 miles from the M53; if you were on it, exit at the first junction and stop somewhere safe instead of carrying on.

Hopping across Rossett to the car park by Hwb Yr Orsedd is one thing; heading for Wrexham, under 5 miles away, is something else, since every mile pushes the AdBlue further in. So distance matters. Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

There is more to rinse out once the engine has run, and our engineers do all of it where your car has ended up. Very seldom does it leave permanent damage when it is spotted early.

Rossett: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel

The car remains where it is, whether that is a road beside Catholic Church of Christ the King, a driveway, a layby or a filling station in Rossett, and our van comes to it. Which fluid was put in, about how much, and whether the engine has turned over: we ask before all else, since those shape the job.

Next, emptying the tank right there removes the polluted diesel along with the AdBlue together. With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, flushing counts: the fuel system is cleaned all the way through since what remains won't flush away unaided. Clean diesel goes in after the fuel filter is cleaned — or replaced, when it needs to be — and then the car is tested. Engine not run? Then expect about half an hour once we are there for most jobs. The equipment is explosion-proof, so a live forecourt is no fault, and it is quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

The last step is to prime the system on clean diesel. Firing it up comes next, and then you head off from where the vehicle is parked, by Caergwrle or on a driveway in Rossett. Our technicians confirm it runs smoothly on fresh diesel before we leave. Since the job is done in its entirety where the vehicle is, a garage never comes into it. Afterwards, you are given the paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice plus a report from the engineer.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Rossett?

Because the jobs vary, a flat figure would not be fair. Whether the engine has been running, and for how long, comes first in what shifts the cost. How much AdBlue got in comes next, and then the location of your car, since an open driveway is simpler for our van to reach safely than a tight space behind Darland Leisure and Activity Centre.

Ahead of any quote, not after, each call from Rossett begins with the same three checks: the liquid, the quantity, plus whether it ran. Once those are answered, a range turns into a single fixed figure.

The quote is given on the call, before a van sets off; settling up happens on the day, by card or by phone, and nothing upfront. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
