AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Roughmoor: How It Occurs and How to Stop It

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the motor and the ignition off then ring 0333 366 0103. A drain plus a full flush, carried out right where the vehicle sits around Roughmoor, is normally what it needs if caught before the motor runs. The remainder of this page explains why it happens and how to make sure it does not — handy if you're reading before it has happened.

Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Plenty of modern diesels around Ramleaze, as well as Roughmoor, carry on two fluids; your engine gets only the diesel. Its own tank holds it, and from there it is sent to your exhaust, where a spray cleans the fumes.

There's a filler for each tank. Some vehicles put the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; a lot of others have the two side by side under one flap. Diesel gets filled at each filling station visit, week in, week out. The AdBlue side is filled far less often, usually from a bottle, and usually by a person who has to stop and think where it goes. The slip lives in that gap.

AdBlue in the diesel tank in Roughmoor: how it takes place

Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things line up.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a message from your car, and letting it run out leads to limp mode — so a hurried top-up, perhaps before work off Nightwood Copse, perhaps outside Woodlands Edge on the way home after work.

Then, your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old vehicle — since a rental car, a new car or a company car places the fillers somewhere your last one didn't.

Third, the spout fits: diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it goes in as easily, and once the tip starts, nothing halts it. It's a few seconds, be it in Hillmead or bang in the centre of Roughmoor.

Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Check these first, at a forecourt around Roughmoor or a drive over in The Fox. Seconds, that's all.

  • Position misleads; the cap does not. AdBlue caps are often blue or carry the name "AdBlue" — diesel caps normally don't.
  • On plenty of cars, the size tells: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.
  • Lift the flap and check for a label — many motors show which goes in which inlet right there.
  • The handbook. If your filler isn't by your diesel cap, it is in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.
  • Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Swindon.

How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

For the day the light appears — wherever you are across Wiltshire — a routine to use.

  • Not in a rush on the side of Grovely Close, not on a slope, not with your engine running: park then switch off first.
  • Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew it. It sounds silly. It works.
  • If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the car on.
  • Slowly does it, through the bottle's own spout, till it's full or the bottle runs out.
  • Only after that, start the car: close the cap, check once more, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you've already poured into your diesel side. Leave out stage five entirely.

AdBlue in your diesel tank already, around Roughmoor?

Do not start your motor: that's where the short order of things starts. Do not switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump. Diluting it with more diesel won't work, because AdBlue sinks to the base instead of mixing — and that is where the fuel is sucked from.

At a forecourt — Shell, Asda or any other — the attendants will normally help push your car clear, when you ask. Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive in Roughmoor.

Already started? Stop once it is sensible, then turn off. Come off the M4 — under 3 miles out of Roughmoor — at the next junction. Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Bath, under 50 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Roughmoor.

Our arrival around Roughmoor, and what takes place next

Wherever the car has stopped, whether by Peatmoor Community Primary School, near Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses (West Swindon) or on your own drive, the van comes to it. Both the work and our price rest on three answers — what liquid, what quantity, and if it's run — so we ask. On the phone call itself, you hear the price — before anything else.

Then your tank is drained and the fuel system cleaned thoroughly. More than with petrol, it counts with AdBlue: crystals build up, certain metals corrode, and none of that clears out unaided, no matter how long it sits. The fuel filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested. Next our engineers fire it up and make sure it runs properly before leaving.

Most jobs are finished in roughly half an hour after our technicians get there, as long as the engine hasn't run — and the pumps our technicians use are safe on a busy forecourt yet quiet after dark beside a house. Your insurer usually wants the engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and both are yours at the end. Payment comes on the day, with no deposit. Misfuelling cover is included in plenty of insurance policies — so use the wait to check yours.
