AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Roughmussel? Keep It Switched Off

Motor off, ignition off: that's how you start if AdBlue has got into your diesel tank. Chemically, AdBlue is simply urea in water. Unlike fuel, it neither ignites nor blends, and no harm happens till the engine pulls it round. If your engine hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally emptied and carefully cleaned where your car sits around Roughmussel. Before you do anything else, ring 0333 366 0103.

What to do right now, Roughmussel: AdBlue in the diesel tank

To do:

  • So nobody can switch the ignition on, take the keys out.
  • Put the hazard lights on if you are at all near moving traffic.
  • Which fluid, and about how much volume? Hang on to the bottle or your receipt, and our technicians can know.
  • Call us from where you are. A postcode starting G53 7, or the name of the closest street, brings our van to you without a search.

Never:

  • Moving the vehicle just a short way is no reason to fire up your motor.
  • Switching the key to ignition alone starts your pump running on many diesels. Skip it.
  • Pouring in extra diesel does not help: AdBlue settles out instead of thinning.
  • Even a short stretch down Sandhaven Road is too far to drive the car.
  • Draining your tank on your own beside the road isn't one to try.

The attendants on duty at any Roughmussel forecourt — the Tesco included — will usually help pushing it clear if you ask. If you're on your own drive, leave the car just where it sits.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not your engine. Its own tank keeps it, and from there it's sprayed into your exhaust, where it cleans the gas. Nothing inside a fuel pump is made for this liquid — and none of it was intended to go through one.

It does not combine. After it's poured into the tank, AdBlue acts not at all like fuel. It drops, because it's denser than diesel, and pools low where the pickup draws its fuel from. The first thing the system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a vehicle that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Nitshill last night, and has not been started since, is still the simple case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of that tank, and nothing has pulled it in.

Two kinds of harm come from there. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps working on the components it hits for as long as it remains there. If the AdBlue has reached the pipework, waiting overnight in Roughmussel makes things worse. In the tank only, waiting does nothing. Diesel lubricates the injection pump and every injector as it flows; water offers none of that, and that is a separate form of harm.

AdBlue in a diesel: why it's frequently worse than petrol

A fault of thin fuel is what you end up with after filling a diesel with petrol at the Esso. Damage just comes from driving on it. Blended into the diesel and left in your tank, it causes nothing.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid as such is simply the wrong one. It can't just be run through, because it does not burn. It does not stay mixed, so it can't be diluted. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the motor "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether your car is in Waterside or the middle of Roughmussel.

The good news is the same as with petrol. Emptying a tank is the easiest part on any fuel system, and with no running, the AdBlue remains in there — wherever across Glasgow City the vehicle has stopped.

How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank in Roughmussel?

It is not deliberate. Plenty of vehicles keep the AdBlue cap beside the diesel inlet, now and then behind a single flap, and muddling them up is easy after dark. Most of the time it occurs with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the pump.

It tends to happen in a few familiar ways. The refill gets hurried outside the local primary school, because the dash lit up with a warning as the kids were taken in. In the evening, a bottle is tipped in on a driveway near Crookston Road. Else, in dim light outside the pub in the village, the vehicle gets refilled by someone using that flap for the first time.

The least known cars see it the most — hire cars, brand-new ones, company cars, and the spare motor of a home with both fuel types. An identical slip, an identical first response — leave it switched off — anywhere you are in Roughmussel or the remainder of Glasgow City.

Roughmussel: started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer in the tank. The fuel filter and pipework have had it pulled through, and some running time carries it on to the injection pump and each injector.

Maybe coming back from Househill Park, or midway across Roughmussel, your engine may run rough, smoke, drop power, flash your dash or stall. Once you safely can, stop and turn it off — without turning it on again to see. Each start pulls more of it through.

Roughmussel lies under a mile from the M77; if you were on it, exit at the first junction and stop somewhere safe instead of carrying on.

How far it went counts. A couple of hundred yards across Roughmussel to the car park by Priesthill United Reform Church is a very different job from a run towards Glasgow, under 10 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the system with every mile. Let us know about how far it had come.

Wherever your car came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to flush after the motor has been started. Very rarely does it leave lasting damage when it is spotted quickly.

Roughmussel: how AdBlue is cleared from a diesel

The car stays where it is, whether that's a street near St Robert Bellarmine RC Church, a drive, a lay-by or a filling station in Roughmussel, and the van comes to it. The job rests on three replies, which our technicians get first — which fluid went in, the amount, and if your motor has run.

The contaminated diesel and the urea come out as one when the tank is emptied, right there. What remains from AdBlue won't wash out unaided, and so the whole system gets a careful flush, which counts much more here than for petrol. Clean diesel goes in once your filter is flushed — or swapped, if it needs to be — and after that your car is tested. Engine not run? In that case expect roughly half an hour once we are there for most jobs. Explosion-proof pumps make a busy forecourt safe to work on, and they're quiet enough not to disturb the street at night.

Bleeding the fuel system with clean diesel comes at the end. Then our engineers start the car and you head off, whether from a parking bay by Nitshill or a drive around Roughmussel. Before we leave, our engineers make sure it's running smoothly with new diesel in. Because the job is done in full where the vehicle is, a workshop never comes into it. You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report afterwards, which is what insurers ask for.

Roughmussel: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Since each callouts vary, a flat figure would not be honest. Whether your engine has run, and for how long, comes first in what changes the price. How much AdBlue was put in comes next, and then the location of your car, because an open driveway is simpler for a technician to reach safely than a tight space behind Crookston Bowling Club.

For that reason, every call from Roughmussel begins by asking the identical trio — what was put in, how much, if the engine ran — before a quote. Once those are known, a range turns into one firm number.

Quoted on the call before the van sets out, the job is settled that day — card or phone, no deposit. As the van is travelling, dig out your insurance: plenty cover misfuelling.
