AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Roundthorn: Why It Happens and How to Prevent It

Keep the engine and ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103 first — the rest can wait when AdBlue is already in the diesel tank. In Roundthorn, finding it before the motor runs usually leaves draining and a thorough flush where it stands. Nothing happened yet? Below, the rest of the page covers the reasons it happens and the ways to avoid it altogether.

AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank

Not one fluid but two: that's how plenty of modern diesels near Roundthorn and Wythenshawe carry, with diesel for the engine. Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into your exhaust stream to clean it.

Each tank has its own filler. Other motors keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; a lot of others have the two side by side under one flap. Filling the diesel side at the pump happens all the time. A driver who has to stop and work out where it goes usually tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less commonly. It's in that gap that the mistake lives.

How AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs in Roundthorn

Rarely is it carelessness: normally three things coincide.

Hurry follows from the warning. The car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up gets done quickly, before work on a drive off Ledson Road, or on the way home in the car park outside The Newall Green.

Then the vehicle is new. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and your hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.

A spout-topped bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, once begun, carries on. The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Roundthorn or out in Baguley.

How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you pour anything, on a drive in Timperley or a forecourt around Roundthorn.

  • Where it sits can mislead; the cap doesn't. AdBlue ones are often blue or bear the name "AdBlue" — diesel caps normally do not.
  • The size. On plenty of motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.
  • A label inside your fuel flap often says which fuel goes where, on plenty of cars. Look for it.
  • Can't find it beside your diesel inlet? In that case check below the bonnet or in your boot — the handbook says where.
  • Whoever had it before will know. Check when you pick up a rental or company car — at Navigation Road's car park, perhaps — rather than when the light appears.

Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

Anywhere in Greater Manchester the light comes on, this is a routine for that day.

  • Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Dallimore Road.
  • Silly as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap does the trick — after you've found the filler and read it.
  • The two behind a single flap? Then make sure the lid on the diesel filler is still shut before raising the bottle.
  • Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.
  • Only after that, start your car: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Discover during the second or third stage that AdBlue went in the wrong filler? That is where you stop. Step five stays off limits.

Put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Roundthorn already?

Brief list, then. Top of that: your motor remains off. Don't switch the ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump. Don't top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is sucked from.

On a forecourt — Tesco, Shell or another — the attendants will normally help push your car clear, when you ask. Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive in Roundthorn.

Where your engine has run already, pull over somewhere safe then turn it off. The next exit means where to come off when you're on the M56, under a mile from Roundthorn. A short hop across Roundthorn is a smaller job than a run towards Salford, under 10 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

What happens when our technicians get there in Roundthorn

By Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School, near BIG Depot Manchester or on your own driveway: wherever the car has stopped, we come to it. Those answers settle this work and the price, and so our technicians ask what was put in, about how much, and if it's run. No one sets off until you've had our price by phone.

Emptying your tank comes next, then a thorough flush of the fuel system. Much more than with petrol, it matters here: crystals build up, certain metals corrode, and nothing clears away unaided, however long it sits. After the filter has been cleaned — or renewed, where required — clean diesel goes in, and finally the car is tested. We don't leave until it has been started and is running correctly.

Unrun vehicles usually need a half-hour visit after arrival. The kit is fine on a busy forecourt, and quiet enough for a residential street after dark. Payment is on the day, not upfront, and you receive the documents an insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
